Relieved of duty

(Alisha pov) “ I demand to speak with the Alpha now!!” Johnny roared at the warriors who both took a step back in fear. “ I'm afraid he’s unavailable until tomorrow's ceremony”. A male voice flew through the air. I looked up the hallway to see Nathan sauntering towards us with a huge grin on his face, one that I knew from experience was never a good sign. “ Don’t worry though Alpha Mitchell’s instructions were very clear” he smiled like the cat that got the cream as he got right in my face handing me a white envelope. “ What's this?” I asked looking at the envelope then back at him but Nathan said nothing. He remained still smiling down at me, I looked at Johnny who was still standing by the backed up warriors, the look of anger in his eyes changed to one of concern once he saw the envelope. “ Omega Clayton under the direct orders of Alpha Mitchell Becker, you are hereby terminated from your current employment. Any and all contact with Mina Rose Becker is hereby forbidden. Please return to your current place of living and await reassignment for future work duty” Nathan smiled smugly at me as my heart shattered. See what happens when you don’t fall into line babe. I heard Nathan in my head something he’d never have the balls to say in front of Johnny but devastating all the same. My wolf cried in my head that her mate could be so cruel. We knew he was cruel already but never would he have dared to interfere with my caring for Mina before. This was a new level of cruelty for Nathan. Nathan could manipulate the system being a man in his position and he had. This was my justified punishment in his eyes. I hadn’t known my place. First when I answered him and his chosen mate back this morning and second when I refused his advances. This was his pay back, he had convinced Alpha Mitchell to take away the one thing that kept me grounded in this miserable hell of a pack I was living in. Mina. “ You can’t do this…..”I heard Johnny and Nathan exchanging insults but I couldn’t focus on what they were. I was too heart broken. This was my worst fear coming to life. To have put my heart and soul into raising my friend's child to then so easily be thrown away as if it had all meant nothing was utterly crushing. I felt myself being shoved but I didn’t care, nothing could hurt me more than this piece of paper in front of me that said I couldn’t see my girl anymore. After a while the shoving stopped and I felt a new presence, one that was trying to comfort me. Maybe dad had come, hearing the news from Johnny. I sobbed into the hard chest taking the comfort that did little to ease the ache in my heart. Eventually I felt Johnny scooping me up and carrying me somewhere, I didn't look up, I just cried into his shirt. I felt something soft beneath me and the feeling of being wrapped in something warm. Knowing someone had put me to bed I lay there allowing my grief to consume me until all I felt was numb and darkness. ( Lucas pov) I ran through the forest letting my wolf free. I'd needed to let him lose since we’d arrived but hadn’t had the chance with the latest developments. The situation was grating on us both and the last thing I wanted was to not be able to reign my own wolf in. Especially with the way Mitchell was losing control he hadn’t had a black out in almost two years yet one word from some she wolf and he was ready to start tearing heads. My investigation into the situation had left me with more questions than answers. I'd been left frustrated by my conversation with former Beta Clayton. There were clearly secrets within this pack, surrounding that day alone was enough to convince me that something wasn’t right. Why would the pack be so adamant that an ordinary young omega she wolf would be responsible for the future Luna’s death. When I’d seen the file surrounding the incident there was no indication of foul play from the omega, if anything she should have been hailed a hero yet if you spoke to any pack member she played a huge part in the girls death. Former Beta Clayton seemed to be adamant the false rumours had been deliberate in order to tarnish the omega’s name. He has been quietly investigating the situation himself for a few years but so far has made little progress, probably due to the fact that this pack seemed to still live in the dark ages and using something called a computer was considered beyond their capability. Beta Clayton had also mentioned Alpha Felix had forbidden him from investigating any more, the pair had even had a heated argument on the subject not long before the Beta was forced into early retirement. The Beta believed that someone has been deliberately fueling the hateful rumours against the omega in order to deflect from the real story surrounding the events of that day. I wasn’t so sure there was some big conspiracy going on but something didn’t feel right. Why would a pack be made to believe an omega could directly cause the death of a future Luna. She wouldn’t have been the first high rank to have died tragically young, but I’d never seen so much hate aimed at one pack member before. Especially when the packs Alpha and Luna not only knew the truth but also had proof of what had happened. Why would they not intervene, surely they weren't blind to all the gossip or were the Alpha and Luna that focused on bringing their son home they had lost sight of everything else. Surely they wouldn’t let this pack attempt to destroy a pack member under their protection, not when they had the means to set the record straight. Someone was hiding something that was for sure, I’d asked to speak to the omega myself earlier but no one seemed able to find her. That in itself already had me worried for the girl's safety. Mitchell was already putting his evil plan in motion to destroy her and unless I could get my hands on the original files from Alpha Felix nothing was going to stop him. Beta Clayton had the original recorded version of events on his files but not the witness statements or the evidence from the post-mortem all of that was in the Alpha’s original files that had been buried when Alpha Felix closed the case, his reasons were understandable he was grieving the loss of his daughter in law, there was also rumours the Luna had been severely depressed. I couldn’t blame him for not wanting the subject brought up, the pack was in a bad way as it was after Rose died. The pack needed to be able to move forward and that was never going to happen if the case was constantly being brought up. However it wasn’t right this omega seemed to have been the collateral damage in all of this. From what I could tell the pack had needed someone to blame for what had happened and she had been the fall guy. It was so unbelievably wrong, the whole thing was turning my stomach. All I knew was I couldn’t let my friend destroy an innocent girl I knew him too well he’d carried the guilt of his own mates death for years and if I let this pack manipulate him into unleashing his anger on this girl nothing would pull him back from the darkness I’d worked so hard to bring him back from. I made it back to the pack house shifting back into my human form as I got to the back doors. I strolled through the kitchen, not worrying about walking around the big house completely naked. I earned myself a few shocked and seductive glances, not all from the females either. My wolf chuckled in my head when one of the older omega’s swooned and had to be picked up by several others. I went straight to my room to take a quick shower to wash away the remains of the forest. My wolf did love rolling around in the dirt, playful little pup that he was at heart. That earnt me a growl in my head but all I did was smirk, rinsing the soap off my body. My mind started wondering back to the young beauty I had saved earlier from the three idiots thinking they were big bad wolves. They had thought they could bully her because she was an omega which I hadn’t taken too well and decided to teach them a lesson. I always hated bullies especially because at heart they were all cowards. The ring leader was evidence to that by the way he had scurried off trying and failing not to sob. I went back into the bedroom throwing on a pair of loose Jogging pants, towel drying my hair remembering the faint smell of mango and passion fruit her scent had given off. It was refreshing and mouthwater but I’m pretty sure that hadn’t just been because of her scent, the girl herself had been just as delicious. She had beautiful long blonde hair that had been tied back showing off her hypnotising brown eyes, she was a natural beauty not like other wolves that put on way too much makeup and perfume, little did these women realise it did more to put a male off than to entice him. In order to stop myself from staring at her full pink lips I’d inspected her wound on her hand which hadn’t been anything and would have healed in a few hours. For the first time in my life I'd found myself intrigued with a female beyond the obvious. For obvious reasons I’d never allowed myself to get close to a female. Relationships were pointless when we had a mate out there. Not that I was interested in tying myself to one woman. However I wanted to know more about this female. She intrigued me the deliguants from before had said she was an omega but she hadn’t felt like an omega, I’d sensed power within her. For being able to look me in the eyes alone said she wasn’t a weak omega. I hadn't even caught her name earlier. Something I had kicked myself for later but I knew I’d make sure we saw each other again. Imagine my surprise when I saw her at Clayton's when speaking with the former Beta. She must be a relative or a family friend. I had heard from Mitchell that their son had announced his mating ceremony soon. I hoped she wasn’t his intended. There was definitely more to this girl that meets the eye and I wanted to find out what. I was pulled from my thoughts by the sound of arguing in the corridors. I stepped outside my room to see a small crowd of people standing outside the nursery. Two warriors stood at the door as if guarding it while the former Betas son and another man with his back to me argued and in the centre of all that stood a small figure with her head down sobbing, her blonde hair trailing down each side like a curtain hiding her. I didn’t need her to look up at me as the smell of passion fruit and mango hit me like a cocktail of deliciousness. It was her. Without thinking I stormed over, ignoring the raging males either side of her that were inadvertently shoving her around while she silently sobbed. “ Hey sweetheart you ok?” I said pulling her towards me wrapping my arms around her to protect her, she didn’t say a word, just kept sobbing against my bare chest but my action earnt me a growl from both males. I looked up to see both of them glaring at me. Great I protect the female they were pushing back and forth like a rag doll but I’m the bad guy. Of course. “ Getaway from her!” Beta Nathan, the spineless asshole, had the nerve to try and give me orders. What kind of Beta stands in the hallway of the high ranks arguing with a pack member. It was unprofessional. “ Who's gonna make me?” I growled back, putting the girl behind me. The Beta stood facing me square on. Pure anger written on his face, clenching his fists so tight they turned white. I wasn’t sure what this guy's problem was but I stood my ground unleashing my power on him. The moron didn’t even have it in him to fight it instead he tried to intimidate the girl behind me by glaring at her instead. “ Who the hell are you man?” The other guy asked, I’d seen him at the Former Beta’s house earlier. I assumed he was Clayton’s son though we hadn’t been introduced. Mitchell had mentioned him before but I didn’t know his name. I suddenly remembered that I’d seen them both at Clayton’s house earlier tonight. Maybe the girl was this guys mate, if that was the case I totally got his anger having me grabbing his mate but also judged him for not keeping her out of his fights. “Me?, I’m the guy saving this poor girl from being your punching bag while you asshats have a pissing contest” I shot back angrily not appreciating these assholes and their attitude. Ignoring the idiots I turned back to the female in question. She was still silently sobbing clutching onto a piece of paper, I tried to take it from her but she held it tight, I rubbed her arms trying to comfort her but it did little to help. “ So which one of you assholes wanna tell me what’s going on?” I said turning back to the two males in question. “ Ask this piece of s**t, he’s the one that saw fit to banish my sister from her duty” sister, she was his sister. I was relieved I hadn’t come between a male wolf and his mate. “ Hardly” the beta scoffed “she’s a glorified babysitter” Beta Nathan’s comment tipped Clayton’s son over the edge. “ You bastard she’s dedicated years of her life to raising that pup after her mother passed away, you know damn well Rose’s final wish was for Alisha to raise her” Clayton’s son tried to charge at Beta Nathan but was held back barely by the warriors behind him. “ Watch your tone warrior,” Beta Nathan said sternly. “ No, you explain the situation Beta” I shot back at him as the Beta of this pack. He should be defusing the situation, not antagonising it. “ It’s simple, Alisha here has been relieved of her duty as babysitter to the alpha pup, under the orders of the new Alpha, but the worthless female can’t seem to handle the rejection”. He said the words with such venom that he seemed to enjoy causing her pain a little too much. “ You know damn well my sister is more than that” the other male said. Beta Nathan just smiled evilly like nothing had been said. “ Now get her out of here Johnny, before she causes any more of a scene than she already has” and with that Beta Nathan walked away. The guy I now knew to be Johnny tried one last time to charge at him but the two warriors just about managed to hold him back. The girl who’s name I had caught was Alisha, was still stood crying in my arms. I hugged her tighter to me looking at her brother who was burning a hole into Beta Nathan’s back. “ Look nothing is going to get solved tonight so maybe take your sister home and you can speak to the Alpha in the morning” I urged him gently, going after the Beta was only going to get him placed in the cells. Johnny signed, nodding after shoving the two warriors off him he took his sister from me picking her up carrying her bridal style, hugging her to his body, she mumbled something about the alpha pup but I couldn’t hear it very well. After seeing them out of the pack house so they didn’t run into any more trouble I stormed back upstairs hoping to find Mitchell in the Alpha’s office. I stepped inside without knocking, Instead of finding Mitchell I found a smug looking Nathan sat in the Alphas chair. “ I’m pretty sure you shouldn’t be in here” he commented, not looking at me. He sat with his legs kicked up on the desk like he owned the place drinking some kind of liquor from an expensive looking glass tumbler. “ I’m certain you shouldn’t be sitting there” I shot back looking around at the stacks of paperwork that looked like they hadn’t been touched in years. Goddess, hadn't any of them heard of iCloud. “ Where is he?” I stood glaring at him. “ He’s unavailable until the ceremony tomorrow” the little prick looked up at me smugly until I leaned over the desk glaring at him and he shrunk back slightly, losing his confidence. “ What the hell was that back there?” I demanded, there had been no need to remove Alisha from her position in such a way. To have worriers waiting for her at the nursery to keep her out and to speak to her in such a way was utterly uncalled for. “ Hey I’m just following orders, she’s had it coming for years anyway” he ran his hand through his blonde hair his body language looked relaxed by he was tense I could tell. “ What are you talking about?” I asked, losing patience with this arrogant little punk. He threw a file down on the desk. I rolled my eyes, snatching it up at a quick glance. It was the bullshit file he’d given Mitchell when we’d first arrived. What I now knew to be a fake account of what happened the day Mitchell’s mate had died. What shocked me was the name on the file. Alisha Clayton Everything suddenly clicked into place Alisha was the omega that had been there the day Mitchell’s mate had died she was the girl Mitchell was set on destroying. No wonder former Beta Clayton was so invested in the case, it was his daughter that was being implicated in the future Luna’s death. Throwing the file back at him, I was happy to see the action knocked him off guard enough that he spilled his drink slightly. I was too angry to laugh though this guy had no idea the hell he was unleashing misleading Mitchell the way he had. There’s no way this asshat didn’t know the truth as the Beta of the pack had access to all the files the alpha did. I was no fool and neither was Mitchell when he found out what his new Beta had done he would come down on him like a ton of bricks. “ Beta, I hope you're ready for what you have set in motion here, he doesn’t forgive easily” he didn’t miss my meaning behind the words I saw his smile slip ever so slightly. I waited a moment longer letting the weight of my words sink in. I turned on my heel and left before I did something that I definitely wouldn’t regret. My anger was flaring and it wasn’t just me, my wolf felt it too, Beta Nathan and I both knew the file he’d given me was fraudulent. He had handed that poor girl up as a lamb for slaughter but I wasn’t going to let him get away with it. Something inside me told me I needed to protect this woman and that’s exactly what I was going to do.
