"No."
I looked at Reid's cool, detached face, a cold smile curling at the corners of my lips.
"The Sullivan Group's cash flow has already dried up. He'll drive himself into a dead end."
That afternoon, a large group of people descended on the VIP corridor outside the cardiac surgery department at the most prestigious private hospital in the city.
Evan led the way in a custom-tailored suit.
At his side were the smug Nina and Mr. Carter, the biggest client in my portfolio.
"Mr. Carter, rest assured. This is the best hospital in the city. I specifically arranged for the top cardiac surgeon here to personally give you the highest-level executive health screening."
Evan deliberately emphasized the words "top cardiac surgeon," his voice dripping with contempt and provocation.
He walked up to the nurses' station and rapped his knuckles hard against the marble counter.
"Go get that doctor named Reid Hayes. Mr. Carter's time is valuable. Tell him to come out right now, pour us some tea, and make sure we get proper service."
The nurse looked embarrassed.
"Mr. Sullivan, Dr. Hayes is seeing a patient right now. Please wait a moment."
"Wait for what?"
Nina immediately chimed in, her voice rising as she sneered.
"Evan paid double for the VIP package! And this is the broke doctor Sophie impulsively married? He'll spend the rest of his life serving people like us, so what's with the attitude?"
Just then, I saw Reid walk out of the consultation room with Mr. Carter's health-screening forms in hand.
Following proper medical protocol, Reid handed the forms to Mr. Carter.
"Mr. Carter, these are your forms. Please follow me to Room Two."
Evan snatched the forms from his hand, deliberately looking for something to criticize.
"Dr. Hayes, isn't your attitude a little too arrogant? We're VIPs, and you can't even give us a smile? Believe me, I'll complain to your hospital director and have you stripped of that white coat."
As he spoke, Evan pulled out a thick stack of hundred-dollar bills and tried to stuff them into the pocket of Reid's white coat.
"Take it. Consider it a little tip. And be more respectful toward my wife from now on."
Reid's eyes instantly turned cold.
I strode forward and slapped the cash out of Evan's hand.
"Evan, did you come to the hospital to get your stomach pumped because your brain's gone rotten?"
Instead of getting angry, Evan actually laughed when he saw me.
He wore an expression that said he'd expected this all along, then smugly straightened the hem of his suit.
"Feeling sorry for him?"
He looked down at me condescendingly.
"I told you. That loser you found can't protect you. Stop making a scene. Swallow your pride, apologize to Nina, and I'll let you come back to me."
Mr. Carter stood to the side. He had no idea what had happened between us. All he saw was Evan riding high, so he immediately joined in.
"Sophie, you're the one being unreasonable here. Mr. Sullivan is young and successful. Married couples fight, then make up. Why make such an ugly scene out of it? You married some junior doctor just to spite him. You really should have known better."
I didn't scream or get into a heated argument with them.
Instead, I took out my phone and, right in front of them, quietly sent a message to the person in charge of Mr. Carter's parent company.
Evan mistook my silence for fear, thinking I had finally come to my senses and realized I couldn't fight him.
He pointed arrogantly at my face and delivered his final ultimatum.
"Sophie, be at the hospital's VIP lobby at ten tomorrow morning. Bring your company seal. In front of everyone, pour Nina a cup of tea and apologize to her. Then we'll call it even."
His eyes were full of menace.
"Otherwise, I'll make sure you're completely blacklisted from this entire circle!"
