Present October 15th, 2020
“Nooooo, please noooo!!” she screamed.
The scene in front her caused her to double over on herself. Her parents tied to chairs. Heads bowed in death as they bled from multiple wounds. A message on the walls in their blood.
“Come to me, Mitsuko, or I will kill him next.”
Earlier that morning
“Kimki, wake up sweetheart. You’re going to be late.” My mom yelled.
I groaned as I turned to face my alarm clock, 11:30 it read.
“s**t, damn, hell, friggin ugh.” I swore. I rushed through my room to get dressed in my leggings and tank top. I put on a deep blue denim jacket because the professor keeps the AC on 24/7. I put my weird black/platinum blonde hair in a messy bun. I quickly brushed my teeth, put in deodorant, applied eyeliner and lip gloss, and ran downstairs. I made it in record time. I slipped my Black Nikes on and grabbed my omelet and hash browns. I ate, grabbed my bag and keys, and was about to head out until my dad called my name.
“Kimki, wait, before you go I wanted to give you this.” My mom stood beside him with a smile on her face, but it didn’t reach her eyes. My mom was always the chipper one out of our family.
My dad approached me with a decent sized box with a white and silver glitter bow. Yeah, I know right.
“Open it, hun.” My mom cooed.
So, I did, but what was inside shocked me to death. It was the very weapons set my sensei said I’d need, but these looked and felt familiar. It felt like a homecoming, but without the party. I lifted the katana blades out of the box, and they sent tingles of recognition through my body. I have no idea where these blades came from, but it felt as if they were made for me and me alone.
I twirled the blades smoothly, and grinned, “Thanks so much, I really appreciate this. I’ve had my eye on this set for awhile now.”
Dad chuckled, “The larger blades will be in your room. Just be careful hun.”
“Always, Dad.” I smiled knowingly. When I was younger and just beginning, I got ahead of myself and tried to take on the blade without my sensei present. Bad idea. Not going to elaborate. It was absolutely humiliating, but I learned from it. I was nearly to the door, when my mom followed me to the car.
“Kimki, here’s my gift to you, sweetheart.” Mom said as she handed me two boxes and a set of keys to a brand new blue Kia Soul.
“Oh mom, this is so beautiful. Thanks so much!!” I gushed. I’ve wanted this car for the longest. I’ve had my license since I turned 18. I then opened the small boxes my mom gave me. The first box held a set of gorgeous platinum cuffs inlaid with genuine diamonds and a black onyx crystal set in the middle. The next box held a crown like band made identically to the bracelets. These also felt familiar. Alarm bells rang in my head. Loudly.
“Mom, what’s all of this for? You don’t need to spoil me. I’m happy with what I have. I promise.” I panicked.
My mom laughed, “Everyone tries to combine your birthday with Christmas, so this year we decided to get you presents later in the year.”
Now I felt bad. I shouldn't have downed their gifts the way I did, “Thanks mom, I really appreciate all you guys so for me, and have done for me.”
She grinned, “ You’re our only child. We always want you to have the best. We love you with everything in us. Just know that sweetheart.”
I hugged her, “I know mom, I’ve always known. I gotta get going. I’m late to class.”
“Alright huh, be safe, we love you.”
“You too, give dad a hug for me please.” I called over my shoulder. I got into the car, and started it. I caught my mom and dad holding each other in the review mirror. Their gazes were solemn and resigned. My heart ached. I hope all is okay, but for some reason I get a gut feeling otherwise.
I get to school just as first class ends. I go to Florida International University. I only live 10 minutes away by car. I pull into my parking spot and turn off my car, as my friends, Caelie and Ryan approach.
Ryan whistled, “Who’s this sexy thing in the new car?”
Caelie laughed, “Nice, Ash. What"s the occasion?”
I took a deep breath, “According to my parents they’re late birthday gifts.” I shrugged and walked with them inside the building to explain to my English professor why I couldn’t make it.
I turned 20 on January 6th. Yeah, I know Joan of Arc's birthday. Everyone is still trying to see if I will actually spar in gym class here for those that practice Martial Arts in some form or another. They’re all convinced I might be a Goddess on the floor. Before I haven’t felt up to it, however today I might take a chance. I have an extremely awful fear of failure I've only just now come to accept.
“Are you going to spar today, Ash?” Ryan asked. “I mean it is Midterms and Belt Graduation, you’ll have finished everything pretty much.”
Yeah, I’m also a Black Belt in both Jiu Jitsu and Tae-kwon-Do. I’m a gymnast, and currently nearly finished with ninjutsu training. I’m the definition of a prodigy where physicality and tactical fighting is concerned. I’ve finished training in less than half the time it takes a normal person.
“I might, it all depends. I do not want to make any enemies.” I replied.
Caelie snorted loudly, “Please tell me this isn’t about Ms. Popular?”
I sighed, “Unfortunately, it is. I hate bullies, and I’m do not want to deal with her attitude today.”
Caelie and Ryan grimaced. Laila Praelini is Ms. Popularity here. She hounds those who cross her. In short, she's the school b***h. She's done a lot of messed up stuff to get back at others as well.
Caelie gasped, “Did you hear yet, Ash we’re getting 3 new students tomorrow in English.”
I raised my brow. Interesting. I was thinking about who it could be when I was shoulder checked and my thought process vanished.
“Excuse me, I didn’t mean that ma'am.” A deep voice said behind me.
I turned and held the gaze of a man with dark brown hair and slate grey eyes. His features were cut sharply. His beauty was…almost cruel. His gaze made my skin crawl in a bad way. His aura threw off danger in waves. However, he seemed familiar even as an unknown rage simmered beneath my skin.
I met his gaze with my brow raised, “You’re excused, just next time please watch for others when you’re in a hurry.”
He smirked bemusedly, “That I will do. Good day.” He turned and hurried down the walkway.
“Well, I wonder if he’s one of the new students.” Caelie stated.
With the way my body reacted I highly doubted it. He seemed a little too smooth to be anywhere near the college age. In fact, I felt as if was here for an entirely different purpose. Only time would tell though. Hopefully later rather than sooner.
