5: Reject her

1551 Words
“Now!” Alia Connon shouted, her tone sharp and commanding as she came between them, not willing to give them another chance to defy her before she turned towards the rest room. Kael and Davon reluctantly tore their glares from each other, their breathing still heavy from the heated confrontation moments before. Both brothers looked ready to explode, but they turned toward the sound of their mother’s heels clicking against the polished floors, echoing through the tension. “Now!” Alia snapped, turning her head to them, her voice brooking no argument. The brothers followed her out, walking in stiff silence. Their pack bodyguard and Karl’s beta, Jacob, stood by the restroom entrance. “Clear out the restroom,” Alia ordered. “No one goes in until I say so.” Jacob nodded, stepping inside the restroom and quickly ushering out everyone. Once the rest room was cleared, Alia motioned for her sons to step inside, her icy glare daring them to defy her. As soon as the door shut behind them, Alia turned around—and froze. Standing in the middle of the restroom was Brandon, her beta and trusted second-in-command. His broad shoulders filled the space, his arms crossed as he leaned casually against the sink. But the tension in his gaze betrayed his calm posture. “What are you doing here?” Alia demanded, her voice sharp. Brandon straightened, his expression grim. “I’m sorry about this Luna, but I had to step in, Luna. The pack is falling apart, and I can’t stand by while time wastes. All these years Alpha Kael has still not found his mate” He glanced pointedly at Kael, his tone biting. “And the pack is paying the price.” Kael’s fists clenched at his sides. “I don’t answer to you, Brandon.” “You don’t my lord,” Brandon said, bowing his head gently, “but I had to do what’s best for the pack. This is according to your late father’s wishes.” “That’s enough!” Alia barked, her tone silencing both men instantly. She turned on her beta, her eyes blazing. “This is pure insubordination Brandon! And you will pay for it once we’re back at the pack home.” She snapped before turning her gaze to her sons. “Care to explain what the hell is going on?" Kael demanded, his voice low but sharp. Alia pressed her fingers to her temples, taking a deep breath. "I knew you’d hate me for this," she said, her voice trembling. "But as the Luna of this pack, it’s my duty to ensure its survival—" "Survival?" Kael snapped, his anger barely contained. "By abandoning your own son? My twin?" Alia’s shoulders stiffened, evading his eyes in clear embarrassment and guilt. "Listen to me, Kael.” She said, closing the distance between them and holding his hand, “There was a prophecy. It was clear—too clear. Our pack witch saw that two of you would destroy each other. One of you would end up dying for the other if you are not separated. Do you understand? I had no choice. Separating you was the only way to protect you both." Kael flung her hand off him, pulling backwards, "and now?" he growled. "Now that he’s here, what’s your plan? Let us kill each other after all?" Before Alia could respond, Brandon, responded, his face calm but his tone laced with annoyance. "Now that he’s here," Brandon said, cutting through the tension, "perhaps he’ll find his mate faster than you’ve been able to." Kael turned on him, his patience running dangerously thin. "What the hell is that supposed to mean?” Then he turned back to his mom, “Luna, what exactly is giving him the guts to talk to us like this?” Alia would then have a look of guilt on her face as she eyes Brandon but then looks away and doesn’t answer Kael’s question. Brandon’s gaze didn’t waver, instead he moved nearer to Alia. “The prophecy, Luna. You know as well as I do that we’re running out of time. The deaths are increasing, and morale is crumbling. If Kael can’t find his mate, perhaps Davon will. At least he’s capable of acting without hesitation.” Davon raised an eyebrow, a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. “Careful, Brandon. I might start to think you actually like me.” Kael growled low in his throat. “You have no idea what you’re talking about.” “Oh, don’t I?” Brandon turned to Alia. “Tell him. Tell him the rest of the prophecy, Luna. Tell him what it means if neither of them succeeds in finding their mate.” Alia’s shoulders stiffened, her gaze shifting uneasily between her sons. “Mom?” Kael prompted, his voice low and dangerous. Alia sighed, pressing her fingers to her temples. “The prophecy…” She hesitated, the words sticking in her throat. Finally, she straightened, her expression resolute. “The prophecy said that only the Alpha’s true mate can bring balance to the pack. Without her, the chaos will only worsen. Death will follow death until there’s nothing left.” “And what if neither of us finds her?” Davon asked, his smirk fading into a serious frown. Alia’s jaw tightened. “Then the pack dies. And you both will die with it.” The gravity of her words hung heavily in the room. Kael took a step closer, his voice steady but filled with anger. “You knew this all along, didn’t you? That’s why you kept us apart. That’s why you kept secrets.” Alia’s gaze faltered, but before she could respond, Kael spoke again. “I’ve found my mate." He announced. “What?” Alia and Davon said in unison, both turning to Kael in shock. Kael crossed his arms, his jaw tight. “I met her two days ago. She’s human.” Brandon froze mid-sentence, his smug smirk faltering. Alia’s eyes widened as she stared at her son in disbelief. Davon’s earlier smirk wipes off. "What?" she whispered. "And you didn’t think to tell me this before now?" Kael crossed his arms, his jaw tight. "I didn’t see the point, considering you seem to think I’ve failed at everything else." Alia’s shock quickly turned to fury. “A human mate. The Moon Goddess must have a sense of humor. And where the hell is Jacob?" She snapped, “I’m going to skin him alive for not telling me this!" "You see?" Brandon questioned, his smirk returning as he backed toward the door. "Barely an hour of Davon being here, and there’s already progress.” He said, leaving the rest room with a smug wave, leaving Alia, kael and Davon. Alia turned back to Kael, her eyes brows knitting in frustration. "When did you meet her? Where is she? Why haven’t you brought her home yet?" Kael sighed heavily, rubbing the back of his neck. "I met her two days back . It’s... complicated." "Complicated?" Alia’s voice rose. "Kael, this pack is on the brink of collapse! Do you understand what’s at stake? Who is she?” Kael shook his head, “she’s the one outside,” he said. Her eyes widen in anger and she turned to face her sons, her eyes blazing with fury. "So the both of you have the same mate! Well doesn’t the moon goddess just love us? Is that what you both were fighting about?" she demanded. Davon shrugged nonchalantly. "She’s my mate. How else was I supposed to behave?" Kael let out a humorless and wicked laugh. "She’s a human, you f*****g i***t! You don’t go around acting like she knows she’s your mate!” Davon’s eyebrows shot up as he gasped, “No wonder she had no scent. But... the prophecy. How is she supposed to—" "To save the pack?" Alia interrupted, her voice cold. "I’m glad someone is thinking clearly for once. Because she can’t be the one the prophecy is about…She can’t be the one. You both have to reject her." "What?" Kael and Davon exclaimed simultaneously, their voices echoing in the restroom. "Yes," Alia said, her tone resolute. "Reject her and mark someone else—someone who fits the prophecy. She’s just a human. She’s useless to us." Kael’s fists clenched. "But mom…the possibility was always there. Our Emore said I would find my mate in the human world." Alia shook her head vehemently. "No. This is madness. You COULD find a werewolf mate in the human world. Not a f*****g MERE HUMAN. You both need to reject her. For the pack’s sake. And for your own! Twins like you can’t share the same mate. The prophecy—" "What prophecy?" Davon interrupted. "The one that says you’ll destroy each other!” Alia snapped. "Does either of you really want to die because of a mere human girl?" Kael turned to Davon, his jaw tight as realizations dawned on him. "What do you say, brother?" Davon stared at him for a long moment, then shrugged. "I’ll reject her if you reject her." "Good," Alia said quickly, opening the door. "Both of you will reject her. Now, let’s get back to dinner."
