Chapter 5

1083 Words
I took a deep breath and tried to calm down. I looked around the dark room. There were old boxes and dusty furniture. I decided to explore a bit. Maybe I can find some answers. I opened one of the boxes and found old letters and photographs in it. The letters were dusty and yellow with age, and the photos were black and white. I picked up a letter and started to read. I was reading a letter from someone called Margaret. She was writing about a terrifying secret about Taylor's family and something about arson. My hands were shaking so badly! I realized I didn't know anything about Taylor's past. I remember getting a letter before I went to live with Taylor. It warned me about his family. Now it all makes sense. There were secrets everywhere, and they were scary! The letter talked about people lying and cheating on each other. I felt so cold and scared. “What was I going to do? What exactly have I gotten myself into?” I kept thinking. Suddenly, I heard the door lock from the outside. I ran to the door and tried to open it, but it wouldn't budge. I was locked in! Panic set in. How long will I be stuck here? What if no one came to get me? Days passed. I had no idea how long I had been in the room. I found some old blankets and made a bed on the floor. I ate some stale bread and drank water from a rusty old jug I found in the corner. It wasn't much, but it kept me alive. How did it all happen that I’m spending my honeymoon locked up in some old room? I kept thinking. I spent most of my time reading more letters and looking at the photographs, since there was literally nothing else for me to do. The letters kept hammering on a dark secret involving Taylor’s family majorly about the arson, but it didn’t really go into details. They talked about a terrible mistake that Taylor’s father had made. It seemed like Taylor’s family had done something terrible, and they were trying to keep it a secret. I found a photograph of a young woman. She looked a lot like Lila. I turned the photo over and saw a name written on the back: Lila. It was her. She had been part of Taylor’s life for a long time. The letters hinted that Lila knew the dark secrets of Taylor’s family. Maybe that was why she was hiding in the hidden room. I felt really scared and confused at that point. I needed to know more. Just then, I heard footsteps approaching the hidden room. My heart skipped a beat. Who was coming? Was it Taylor? I quickly put the letters back in the box and hid behind a piece of furniture. The door creaked open, and I held my breath. I could see a shadow moving in the doorway. The footsteps got closer and closer. I was so scared, I thought my heart would burst out of my chest. The person stopped right in front of the box I had been looking through. I could hear them breathing. I closed my eyes and prayed they wouldn't find me. After what felt like forever, the person turned and walked out of the room. I let out a sigh of relief. But I knew I couldn't stay there forever. I waited a few more minutes to make sure the coast was clear. Then, I slowly stood up and made my way to the door. I peeked out and saw that the hallway was empty. I took a deep breath and stepped out of the hidden room. I needed to find Taylor and talk to him. I needed to know the truth about so many things. Why was I locked up in the room without anyone caring? His family and why Lila was hiding. But I was also scared. What if he got mad at me? What if he didn't want to tell me the truth? What if he threw me back into the room? I walked down the hallway, my mind racing with questions. I had to be brave. I had to find out the truth, no matter what. As I reached the main hall, I saw Taylor talking to Jane. They both looked serious. I took a deep breath and walked up to them. "Taylor, we need to talk," I said, trying to keep my voice steady. Taylor looked at me, his eyes narrowing. "What is it, Emilia? Where have you been all this while? “He added like he forgot I hadn’t gone out of the room before locking it up. "I found something in the hidden room," I said. "I need to know the truth about everything." Taylor's face went pale. He glanced at Jane, who looked just as shocked. "Emilia, this isn't the time," he said, his voice tense. "No, it is the time," I insisted. "I need to know what's going on." Taylor sighed and ran a hand through his hair. "Fine. Meet me at my studies in an hour. I'll tell you everything." I nodded, feeling a mix of relief and fear. I had finally gotten Taylor to agree to talk. But what would he say? What secrets would he reveal? I walked back to my room, my mind still racing. I had an hour to prepare myself for whatever Taylor was going to tell me. I needed to be strong and ready for anything. As I sat on my bed, I thought about everything that had happened. The letter I received before the wedding, finding Lila in the hidden room, and the old letters and photographs. It all pointed to something big and dark. I took a deep breath and tried to calm my nerves. I had to be brave. I had to face whatever was coming. I couldn't let fear control me. The hour passed slowly. Finally, it was time to go to Taylor's studies. I stood up and walked to the door, my heart pounding. I had to know the truth, no matter what. I reached Taylor's study and knocked on the door. "Come in," he said. I opened the door and stepped inside. Taylor was sitting at his desk, looking serious. "Close the door," he said. I closed the door and sat down across from him. "I'm ready," I said. "Tell me everything."
