Emilia’s POV
Taylor led me through the fortress, and I couldn't help but feel overwhelmed. The walls were high and made of dark stone, giving the place a cold and unwelcoming feel. The pack members were gathered in the courtyard, their eyes following my every move. I felt small and out of place among them.
"This is the main hall," Taylor explained as we entered a large building at the center of the fortress. "We hold meetings and gatherings here. You'll get used to it in time."
I nodded, trying to take it all in. The hall was grand, with high ceilings and professional carvings on the walls. It was beautiful, but it also felt cold and impersonal.
A tall, elegant woman with a perfect body shape and piercing blue eyes approached us. "Alpha Taylor," she said, bowing slightly. "Welcome back."
"Thank you, Jane," Taylor replied. "This is Emilia, my wife."
Jane rolled her eyes towards me, and for a moment, I thought I saw a hint of disapproval from her. But it was gone as quickly as it had appeared. "Welcome, Emilia," Jane said, her voice smooth. "I hope you will find your place here."
I forced a smile. "Thank you."
Taylor turned to me. "Jane will show you to your room. I have some important matters to attend to."
I nodded, feeling a rush of anxiety as Taylor walked away. I was alone now, in a place where I knew no one.
Jane led me through the halls, pointing out various rooms and explaining their purposes. I tried to take it all in, but my mind was racing. Everything felt like I was in a dream.
Finally, we reached a door at the end of a long corridor. "This will be your room," Jane said, opening the door.
I stepped inside and looked around. The room was spacious and well-furnished, but it felt empty and cold. I walked over to the window and looked out at the courtyard below. The pack members were still there, going about their business.
"You'll have time to settle in," Jane said. "If you need anything, just ask."
"Thank you," I replied, my voice barely above a whisper.
Jane nodded and left, closing the door behind her. I sat down on the bed, feeling a wave of loneliness wash over me. I missed my old home, despite everything that had happened. I missed the familiarity, the comfort of knowing my place.
As the days passed, I tried to adjust to my new life. I attended meetings and gatherings, trying to learn the ways of the Mooncrest pack. But no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't shake the feeling of being an outsider. The pack members were polite, but distant. I felt their eyes on me, always watching, always judging.
One evening, I was walking through the halls, trying to clear my mind. I had just left a meeting where I had felt particularly out of place. As I passed by a room, I heard voices inside. I paused, recognizing one of the voices as Taylor's.
"She doesn't belong here," a woman's voice said. My heart skipped a beat. I recognized the voice as Jane's.
"Give her time," Taylor replied. "She will adjust."
"Adjust?" Jane scoffed. "She's weak. She doesn't have what it takes to be part of this pack."
My heart sank. I knew I wasn't fitting in, but hearing it confirmed was painful. I leaned closer, trying to hear more.
"Do you remember your first love?" Jane's voice was softer now, almost tender. "She was strong, fierce. She would have made a perfect wife."
Taylor's voice was quiet. "That was a long time ago, Jane. Things are different now."
"But you still think about her, don't you?" Jane pressed. "You still wonder what could have been."
There was a long silence. My heart kept pounding in my chest. Who was this woman they were talking about? And why did it matter so much?
"I made my choice," Taylor said finally. "Emilia is my wife now. We must support her."
Jane sighed. "Very well. But don't expect me to welcome her with open arms."
I backed away from the door, my mind racing. I felt a mix of emotions—hurt, anger and confusion. Who was this woman Taylor had loved? And why did Jane care so much?
I hurried back to my room, feeling confused and overwhelmed. I couldn't stop thinking that there was more to the story. I felt like the fortress was hiding secrets. I had to find out the truth, but I didn't know where to start.
That night, I couldn't sleep. The letter's warning kept playing in my head: "Trust no one." I knew I had to be careful, but I also had to be strong. I didn't want to let fear control me.
Before falling asleep, I promised myself to find out the pack's secrets. I wanted to know who Taylor's first love was and why it was so important. Most of all, I wanted to prove to myself and everyone else that I belonged here.
The next morning, I felt determined. I got dressed fast and went to the main hall. I wanted to start finding out things, so I decided to talk to people who knew Taylor well.
When I got to the hall, I saw Jane talking to some other pack members. I took a deep breath and said "Good morning," trying to sound strong.
Jane looked at me without saying anything. "Good morning, Emilia. What can I do for you?" she asked.
"I want to know more about the pack," I said. "And about Taylor."
Jane raised an eyebrow, looking very surprised. "What do you want to know?"
Everything," I replied. "I want to understand my new home and my new family.
Jane looked at me for a while and then nodded. "Okay, come with me."
Jane showed me around the pack's space, explaining their history and rules. I was eager to learn about Taylor, but she was secretive. She didn’t mention a thing about it.
I spent the day talking to others, trying to piece together his life. A puzzle started forming, but there was a missing piece: his first love.
