Prologue

For Serene Avery Gilmore, life had always been simple and filled with joy. To her, "pain" was merely a concept found in books or movies—something that happened to other people. Growing up in a loving family with a solid circle of friends, she felt her world was safe and untouchable. She lived comfortably within the bubble created by those who loved her. But in an instant, everything changed. What she thought was gold turned to ash. One door opened at the wrong moment, and twenty-three years of certainty vanished. It wasn’t just a shock; it was the total erasure of the life she thought she knew. The foundations of her world crumbled, leaving her standing amidst ruins she no longer recognized. Everything she believed in was a lie. Crushed by the weight of the truth, Serene sought refuge on the rooftop of a luxury hotel, desperate for air. As she looked out at the city lights, her tears blurred the horizon. She felt herself sinking into a deep, hollow void. The "perfect life" she once took pride in was gone. Now, untethered and alone, she felt lost in the dark. She didn't notice the man watching her from the shadows. Nor did she realize that cameras were lurking in the distance, waiting for the perfect timing for a scandal to break. In that moment, the only thing she could hear was the deafening silence of the night. Then, the man approached and dropped to one knee. A stranger was offering her a diamond ring. It looked like a beautiful lifeline, yet she could sense it was heavy with secrets. Serene was suddenly faced with a harrowing choice: Should she stay and drown in the debris of her shattered truth, or step into a lie that offered a way out?
