MALACHAI It had been a total of seven days. Seven days since Lucas found her, five days since she woke up and hasn't said a word to anyone since then. She's completely out of touch with everyone and everything around her, she just stares into space. Cassie and Lucy said she's experiencing trauma but some part of me thought there was something else, I've been trying to get her to even look at me but it's all been in vein. Right now, Nate (who was my second in command) and I were parked in front of her house and thank God it was just outside the werewolf territory. It looked uninhabited to say that much, and the inside wasn't much better when we decided to go in. I looked through her parents room while he looked on their offices for something, anything of significant importance because if Cassie would not tell me I would find out for myself. She made me stay away from my mate for almost a decade and I wanted, no I needed an explanation as to why. Yes you heard right, I've known Selene was mine for nine years and the story of how I found her is quiet funny if you think of it. A little girl sat by herself playing in the sand box while all the children were either on the swing set or slide or whatever it was they were doing. However this silver haired little girl was so content with the sand box; it was when I got close to her that I smelled her sweet scent. Don't call me a child predator or anything but I knew she was mine just from her smell. I paid no attention to whatever Cassie was saying as I walked towards the little girl and sat next to her in the sand box, she looked up at me and I was immediately taken by her innocent gaze. "This is my spot Mr," she said to me with a scowl and I raised my hands in surrender, "I know, I just want to play with you may I?" I asked her and she looked at me for a few seconds before nodding. I stayed there for about half an hour until Cassandra who was my caretaker at the time decided it was time for me to go back to my own territory. I couldn't believe at seventeen years old I found my mate and she was still a child, I would waif for her though, because what else do I have but time on my hands? On the way back Cassandra told me that I could not tell Selene anything even when she reached 16 which was the age mates were allowed to claim one another. I couldn't understand why and protested against it, "you can't tell her anything Kai because she may very well be in life threatening danger if certain people found out certain things about her, you can see her every now and then but you have to erase all traces of your affiliation with her in case someone is keeping tabs on her, I can't tell you why right now but you just have to trust me." And that was what I did, I played with her, took care of her as she grew up but I always had to make her forget; it was painful but had to be done, I was there through every stage in her life, every birthday, bad day and everything in between. It killed me to make her forget me, it killed me to appear without showing myself but I was not going to argue with someone who's been around as long as Cassandra. And here we are, with me still not knowing why Cassie made do what I did, "Kai, you need to see these," Nate said interrupting my train of thought; he had a file in his hands and handed it to me. I read through it and some things started to fall into place. A necklace fell out of the file when I turned the page, when Nate picked it up and handed to me I saw that it was actually a locket and inside it was something I didn't quite expect. I had Nate take her bike from the garage and we were off, making sure we cleaned up so her parents wouldn't be suspicious. The drive back home was extremely long and I started to wonder why we didn't just portal here but at least it gave me time to think. The moment I thought I had an answer another question popped up, this time Cassie would have to tell me the truth. When we got back to the castle I went straight to my room and found Cassie brushing Selene's hair who was still unresponsive. Her eyes looked empty and there was no trace of emotion on her pale face, I kissed her forehead and told Cassandra that it was urgent that I spoke to her outside, I took one last look at Selene and followed the witch out. "When I met Selene for the first time, how did you know she was in danger?" She seemed taken aback by this but I wasn't going to back down, "How did you know Cassandra?" She looked back at the door before turning to me, "I knew because I was checking in with her parents and re-cloaking her to make sure no one would find her, she's...it's very complicated Kai," I narrowed my eyes and pulled out the paperwork and locket from the file and handed them to her, "those are adoption papers as far as I know and as for the locket you care to shed a little light on it?" I asked. She explained it all, from beginning to end without missing a single detail and at the end of it I couldn't believe what I was hearing, I now fully understood why she had kept all those secrets. 'chirp?' I heard a faint voice say and I knew it was hers, I rushed back into the room with Cassie on my heels; there for a split second was a solid shadow standing by her bed but it turned into a bird and flew out the window. Choosing to pay attention to that later I went and sat by Selene's side and she looked at me, I mean really looked at me; "Malachai..." she said with a hoarse voice and turned to Cassie saying her name as well, " Selene I'm so glad you're okay but what happened, why did you go mute?" I asked her and she stared at me for the longest time before tears welled up in her eyes and started to fall, she made no sound, no move to wipe them; she just sat there motionlessly staring at me. It killed me, the look in her eyes; she was in pain and they reflected it clearly, " Demetre, he charged me for treason because I stayed here with you and he-" her voice cracked and that's when she started to sob, "- he beat me and starved me, he told me that it would play for it with my life just as my parents did, Malachai," she paused and sucked in a shaky breath, " before he told me to run he showed me the severed heads of my parents, he killed them because I stayed here, my parents died because of me," she said quietly and then started to wail, all that bottled up pain was now rising to the surface and all I could do was watch. After crying her heart out Selene fell asleep in my arms and as I lay next to her all I could think of was the brewing storm that had finally started it approach. Things were definitely going from bad to to worse. The next morning I woke up to an empty bed and was happy that she finally decided to get out of bed that was until I saw the note on her bedside table. Malachai, thank you for everyone you've done for me  even though we aren't fully acquainted yet you have my gratitude and affection, however this is where we must part ways. I am the cause of the deaths of my parents and as such I will atone for their unjust death with my own life. xoxo- Selene. I got out of bed not caring about how I looked, dawn was approaching so most of the the people on the castle were still asleep. I searched for her, and screamed her name on every floor, even the one that hasn't been used since I was a child. I was walking through the hall when I noticed one the tower doors was open. My heart was in my throat as I ran up the numerous stairs that twisted and turned every so often; when I got to the door, it was locked from this inside. "Selene, open the door please, we can talk about this you don't have to do this, it wasn't your fault just let me in," I pleaded while banging the door, after that the only sound was that of her calm heart and the words "there's nothing to fix." I kicked the door down and saw her Standing on the ledge her back facing ghe window, "Sele-" I couldn't finish when she leaned back, time slowed down as I tried to reach her but she had fallen by the time my hand got to her. "No!" I yelled as I watched my mate fall from the tallest tower on my castle because that was all I could do, I was frozen in shock. Her body plummeted to the ground but she did not scream not once and just as she was about to make contact with the ground something or rather someone caught her, and it was the same shadowy figure from yesterday. It held her for a number of seconds then set her on her feet and she cussed out, "damnit chirp, I wanted to die it's the only way I'll see them again," she yelled and collapsed on to her knees sobbing. Again the shadow was replaced by a bird and flew away. I made my way outside where she was and at the exact same moment Cassie came as well, it was a silent agreement she had to to, at least know part of the truth. SELENE I was on the ground wondering why I wasn't even allowed to choose whether or not I lived, Malachai and Cassandra were in front of me but I paid no mind to them, all I wanted was my parents; for my mother to brush my hair and father to go for late drives but that was all gone now thanks to me, I'm a walking enigma and I should be put down. You're probably wondering what happened so let's rewind the chain of events shall we? When I woke up a few days ago I was aware of everything around me but I couldn't just tap into reality, it was like I was watching life from the depths of my mind. It was only when a special little bird flew into my room that I came back to my senses; Chirp my loyal little Birdy just flapped his wings staring at me and tilting his head that's when it happened. A black smoke surrounded him and in no time a shadow stood in his place, I was really starting to get used to this you know, everything not being what it should be. The Shadow didn't say anything and as soon as Malachai and Cassandra burst in, it went back to chirp and flew out the window. That's when all the pain I had been subconsciously avoiding came crashing down on me and my heart was torn into shreds once more. I wailed bitterly and at some point fell asleep due to exhaustion, the feeling wasn't better when I woke up bit I had made my decision but apparently I had no control over the fact that I lived or died. "Selene, there's something you need to know an it's very important," Malachai said to me on a voice that most people would use on a child but could I blame him? The man literally watched his other half jump out of a tower window. "You're not human as you already know, you're a witch and no ordinary one at that." " You Selene belong to a bloodline that has been wiped off the face of the earth, you're the member of the long extinct VestasDiablero coven."
