THE RECORDING

The message from the investigator spread through Adrian’s mind like a slow storm. A video recording. For three years, he had been told that the operating room cameras were inactive that night due to maintenance. That explanation had been used repeatedly during the investigation—by the hospital administration, by the review committee, by everyone who questioned him. Yet now a recording had surfaced. And according to the investigator, someone else was visible in it. Adrian stood motionless in the hallway for a few seconds after hearing the news. Lily was still beside him, her earlier confession hanging awkwardly in the air between them, but the investigator’s arrival had shifted the entire atmosphere. “Where is the recording?” Adrian asked. “In the archives review office,” the investigator replied. “But before we show it to anyone else, the commission wants you present.” Adrian nodded slowly. “I’ll come with you.” The investigator gestured toward the elevator at the end of the corridor. As Adrian began walking away, he briefly glanced at Lily. Their eyes met for a second. Neither of them spoke. Then Adrian turned and continued down the hallway. The administrative conference room looked different this time. Instead of the full hospital board, only four people were present: Malcolm Graves, the two investigators from the Medical Oversight Commission, and a technical analyst seated beside a laptop connected to a large monitor. Adrian stepped inside quietly. Malcolm looked up. “You came quickly.” “You said there was a recording.” The investigator nodded. “We recovered it from a backup server connected to the surgical theater archives. It appears the file was intentionally removed from the hospital’s active database.” Adrian remained standing. “So someone hid it.” “That is our current assumption.” The analyst tapped a few keys on the laptop. “We’ve verified the timestamp. The footage was recorded on the night of the surgery three years ago.” Malcolm folded his hands on the table. “Before we play it, Dr. Cole, there’s something you should understand.” Adrian waited. “If the video confirms what the written reports say, the investigation will likely close immediately.” “And if it doesn’t?” Adrian asked. The investigator answered calmly. “Then the hospital’s previous inquiry will be officially declared compromised.” Adrian nodded once. “Show it.” The analyst pressed a key. The monitor flickered to life. Grainy security footage appeared on the screen—an overhead angle of the operating room. Adrian recognized it instantly. The surgical lights. The arrangement of instruments. The position of the monitors. It was exactly as he remembered. The timestamp in the corner read 23:41. The recording showed Adrian standing beside the operating table, preparing for the procedure. Several nurses moved around the room while another doctor stood near the anesthetic machine, checking the patient’s vitals. Adrian leaned slightly closer to the screen. “That’s Dr. Bennett,” he said quietly. One of the investigators nodded. “He was listed as the assisting anesthesiologist.” The footage continued. Everything looked normal. Routine. Until the moment the patient’s vitals began dropping. Adrian watched carefully as the events unfolded. He remembered every second of it. But then something happened on the screen that made his chest tighten. The camera angle shifted slightly. And another figure entered the frame. A doctor wearing a surgical mask stepped closer to the operating table from the opposite side. Adrian frowned. “That’s not possible.” Malcolm looked at him. “What do you mean?” Adrian pointed toward the screen. “There wasn’t another surgeon in the room.” The investigator leaned forward. “Are you certain?” “Yes.” But the recording clearly showed someone there. The figure moved quickly toward the patient, adjusting something near the monitoring equipment before stepping partially out of the camera’s angle again. The analyst paused the video. “Can you identify the person?” Adrian stared at the frozen frame. The mask covered most of the doctor’s face, but the posture… the movement… Something about it felt disturbingly familiar. “I… can’t be sure,” Adrian said slowly. Malcolm leaned forward. “Look carefully.” Adrian studied the screen again. Then his eyes narrowed. “The badge,” he murmured. “What about it?” the investigator asked. Adrian pointed. “The hospital ID badge clipped to the coat.” The analyst zoomed in. The image sharpened slightly. Just enough to reveal part of a name. The room went silent. Malcolm leaned closer to the monitor. “…that can’t be right.” The investigator looked between the two men. “Do either of you recognize the name?” Adrian’s voice was quieter now. “Yes.” Malcolm’s expression had gone pale. “Turn the video off,” he said suddenly. The analyst hesitated. “Sir?” “Turn it off.” The screen went dark. No one spoke for several seconds. Finally, one of the investigators broke the silence. “Mr. Graves… are you familiar with the doctor in that footage?” Malcolm didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he looked at Adrian. And for the first time since this entire investigation began, there was something uneasy in his eyes. “Yes,” Malcolm said slowly. “I know exactly who that is.” Nearly an hour later, Adrian left the administrative wing. The meeting had raised more questions than answers. The investigators had decided to continue analyzing the footage before drawing conclusions. But one thing was now clear. Someone else had been present during the surgery. Someone whose involvement had never been mentioned. As Adrian walked toward his office, his thoughts churned heavily. Three years of blame. Three years of silence. And now the truth was beginning to surface. But the truth could also destroy someone else. Someone powerful. Someone still inside this hospital. Turning a corner in the hallway, Adrian suddenly stopped. Lily stood leaning against the wall near his office door. She had clearly been waiting. “You shouldn’t be wandering around again,” Adrian said automatically. Lily smiled faintly. “I was waiting for you.” “For what?” “To finish what I started earlier.” Adrian sighed slightly. “Lily—” She raised a hand to stop him. “No, this time you’re going to listen.” Adrian remained silent. Lily walked a few steps closer. “I meant what I said before.” “You were emotional.” “I’m still emotional.” Adrian crossed his arms. “That doesn’t make it wise.” Lily studied his face. “You always hide behind logic.” “That’s part of being a doctor.” “And part of being human is ignoring logic sometimes.” Adrian didn’t respond. Lily’s expression softened slightly. “You know something?” she said. “What?” “I still think you’re incredibly frustrating.” Adrian raised an eyebrow. “That’s not surprising.” “But I also think you’re… kind of amazing.” He shook his head. “You don’t know enough about me to make that judgment.” “Maybe not.” Lily tilted her head slightly. “But I know enough.” “Enough for what?” Her eyes held his steadily. “Enough to know that I love you.” The words hung quietly in the hallway. Adrian didn’t move. Lily continued, her voice calmer now. “And yes… I also think you’re incredibly handsome.” Adrian blinked slightly. “That’s irrelevant.” Lily laughed softly. “It’s not irrelevant to me.” “You’re serious.” “Completely.” She stepped closer. “I like the way you look when you’re thinking too hard.” “That’s oddly specific.” “And I like the way your voice gets lower when you’re trying not to show emotion.” Adrian looked genuinely puzzled. “You’re analyzing me now.” “Maybe.” She smiled slightly. “But I also like your… very unfairly attractive face.” Adrian rubbed his forehead briefly. “You realize this is the most unusual confession I’ve ever heard.” “Good.” She crossed her arms playfully. “I didn’t want to be predictable.” Before Adrian could respond, a sudden sound echoed down the hallway. Footsteps. Fast. One of the investigators rushed toward them. “Dr. Cole!” Adrian turned immediately. “What happened?” The investigator stopped a few feet away, breathing heavily. “We just enhanced the video footage.” “And?” The investigator’s face was pale. “You were right.” Adrian’s voice lowered. “About what?” The investigator hesitated. Then said quietly— “The second doctor in that operating room…” He paused. “…is someone who currently holds one of the highest positions in this hospital.” The hallway fell silent. Lily looked between them, confused. Adrian’s eyes narrowed. “Who?” The investigator swallowed. “You’re not going to believe it.” And then he said the name.
