Malcolm Graves sat alone in his office long after midnight.
The stack of personnel files lay scattered across his desk, but only one file remained open in front of him.
The photograph inside it stared back at him like a silent accusation.
Graves rubbed his forehead slowly.
“This can’t be right,” he murmured.
But the evidence refused to change.
The identity used to call Adrian Cole into the hallway three years ago had been falsified. The timestamp, the badge access logs, the altered system entry—everything had been manipulated.
And the person connected to that manipulation was not just a random hospital employee.
It was someone who had worked closely with Adrian.
Someone who had been present during the investigation.
Someone who had even testified in earlier hearings.
Graves leaned back in his chair, staring at the ceiling.
If he was correct, the truth would shake the entire case.
But it would also raise another dangerous question.
Had Adrian Cole truly been innocent the entire time?
Or had the manipulation been designed to protect him?
The legal implications alone could collapse the entire prosecution.
Graves reached for his phone and dialed the lead investigator.
“We need to reopen the evidence chain,” he said immediately when the call connected.
“What happened?”
“I’ve found a discrepancy in the personnel logs.”
“What kind of discrepancy?”
“The person whose identity was used to call Dr. Cole into that hallway… had their credentials copied.”
There was a pause on the other end.
“Copied by who?”
Graves looked at the photograph again.
“That’s what we’re about to find out.”
The Next Morning – Legal Strategy
The conference room inside the hospital legal office was tense.
Adrian sat at one end of the table while his attorney reviewed the latest developments.
Across from them sat Malcolm Graves.
And beside Adrian, Lily watched everything carefully.
Her presence in the room was unusual for someone who had originally been admitted as a patient.
But no one had objected.
By now it was clear she was deeply involved in Adrian’s situation.
The lawyer closed the file slowly.
“If Mr. Graves’ discovery holds up,” he said, “this changes the case dramatically.”
Adrian frowned.
“How?”
“Because the prosecution’s entire timeline depends on the assumption that the hallway call was legitimate.”
Malcolm nodded.
“And it wasn’t.”
Lily leaned forward slightly.
“So someone copied the identity of a dead man?”
“Exactly,” Graves said.
“And used that identity to create a false digital trail.”
Adrian stared at the table.
“So the person who sent me into that hallway was deliberately setting me up.”
“That appears to be the case.”
The lawyer folded his hands together.
“This could prove that the original accusation against you was manipulated.”
Adrian looked up.
“Meaning?”
“Meaning your guilt becomes extremely difficult to prove.”
For the first time in days, the tight knot in Adrian’s chest loosened slightly.
But Lily noticed something else.
“You’re not happy,” she said quietly.
Adrian glanced at her.
“I just realized something.”
“What?”
“If someone went this far to frame me…”
He paused.
“…they’re probably still trying to cover their tracks.”
Malcolm Graves nodded slowly.
“That’s exactly why we need to move carefully.”
The lawyer agreed.
“If we present this evidence too early, the person responsible may try to destroy the remaining proof.”
The room fell quiet.
Lily looked between them.
“So what do we do?”
Graves answered.
“We let them think the case is still against Adrian.”
Adrian raised an eyebrow.
“You want me to keep looking guilty?”
“For now,” Graves said.
“Because the person behind this will eventually make another move.”
Outside the Legal Office
The meeting ended shortly afterward.
Adrian and Lily stepped into the quiet hallway together.
For a few moments neither of them spoke.
Then Lily stopped walking.
Adrian turned toward her.
“What?”
She crossed her arms.
“You’re doing it again.”
“Doing what?”
“Carrying the whole weight of this on your shoulders.”
Adrian exhaled slowly.
“I’m the one on trial.”
“You’re also not alone.”
Adrian looked at her carefully.
Lily stepped closer.
“Your lawyer is fighting for you.”
“Malcolm Graves is risking his career helping you.”
“And I’m here too.”
Her voice softened slightly.
“I’m not going anywhere.”
Adrian felt something shift inside him again.
Three years of isolation had convinced him he had to fight alone.
But Lily’s determination kept breaking through that belief.
“You’re stubborn,” he said quietly.
“I’ve been told that.”
He smiled faintly.
“But it might be exactly what I need.”
Lily’s expression softened.
“Good.”
They resumed walking toward the elevator.
But neither of them noticed the man standing quietly at the far end of the hallway.
He had been there long enough to hear the last part of their conversation.
Long enough to realize something dangerous.
The investigation was turning against him.
Because Malcolm Graves had discovered the false identity.
And if the lawyers managed to connect the final piece of evidence…
The truth about that night would finally be exposed.
The man stepped back into the shadows and pulled out his phone.
He dialed a number quickly.
When the call connected, his voice was calm but urgent.
“We have a problem.”
A pause.
Then he continued.
“Graves is getting too close.”
The voice on the other end asked one question.
“What do you want me to do?”
The man’s eyes moved toward the elevator where Adrian and Lily had disappeared moments earlier.
His answer was quiet.
“Make sure Adrian Cole never reaches the courtroom again.”
