THE MOVE NO ONE EXPECTED

935 Words
The first sign that something was wrong came quietly. Too quietly. Adrian noticed it the moment he returned to his office. His desk had been rearranged. Not dramatically. Not enough for anyone else to notice. But just enough. The file he had left on the left side of the desk was now slightly angled. A pen that usually sat near the edge had been moved closer to the center. Even the chair behind his desk was pushed in a little farther than he remembered. Adrian stood still in the doorway. Someone had been here. He stepped inside slowly. “Lily,” he called softly. She appeared a moment later from the hallway, her expression curious. “What is it?” Adrian didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he walked toward the desk and picked up the file. “This wasn’t like this before.” Lily frowned. “You’re sure?” “Yes.” She stepped closer, her eyes scanning the room. “You think someone came in here?” “I know they did.” A quiet tension settled between them. Lily moved toward the cabinet near the wall. “Is anything missing?” Adrian checked quickly. “No.” “Then what were they looking for?” Adrian didn’t answer. Because suddenly the answer felt obvious. “Evidence,” he said finally. Lily’s expression hardened. “They’re getting nervous.” Before Adrian could respond, his phone rang. He glanced at the screen. Malcolm Graves. Adrian answered immediately. “Graves.” “Where are you?” Malcolm’s voice came sharp and urgent. “My office.” “Stay there. I’m coming.” The line went dead. Lily crossed her arms. “That doesn’t sound good.” “No,” Adrian said quietly. “It doesn’t.” Minutes Later Malcolm Graves entered the office without knocking. His expression confirmed everything Adrian had already suspected. “They’ve started moving,” Graves said. Adrian nodded toward the desk. “Someone was here.” Graves didn’t look surprised. “They’ve been accessing restricted areas all morning.” Lily stepped forward. “Looking for what?” Graves met her gaze. “Anything that connects them to the false identity.” Adrian leaned against the desk. “So we’re running out of time.” Graves nodded. “Yes.” The room fell silent for a moment. Then Lily spoke. “So what’s the plan?” Graves looked between them. “There are only two options now.” “Which are?” Adrian asked. “We either wait for the court to continue…” He paused. “…or we force the truth out before they can bury it again.” Lily’s eyes lit up slightly. “I like the second option.” Adrian raised an eyebrow. “That doesn’t sound like a legal strategy.” Graves allowed a faint smile. “It isn’t.” Adrian folded his arms. “Then what is it?” Graves stepped closer, lowering his voice. “We draw them out.” Silence. Lily leaned forward slightly. “How?” Graves’ eyes sharpened. “We give them something they can’t ignore.” Adrian frowned. “And what would that be?” Graves looked directly at him. “You.” The Plan An hour later, the hospital corridors carried a different kind of tension. A rumor had started. Whispers spreading from one department to another. Dr. Adrian Cole had obtained new evidence. Evidence strong enough to expose the real culprit. The rumor wasn’t entirely true. But it didn’t need to be. It only needed to be believable. Adrian walked through the hallway with deliberate calm, fully aware of the eyes following him. Lily walked beside him. Closer than usual. Her hand brushed lightly against his arm as they moved. “You’re doing well,” she murmured. “I feel like bait.” “You are bait.” Adrian exhaled. “Reassuring.” Lily smiled faintly. “You’re not alone.” She didn’t just say it. She showed it. Her fingers slipped gently into his hand as they walked. Adrian glanced at her. “You’re not even trying to hide it anymore.” “No,” she said softly. “I’m not.” There was something bold in her voice now. Something open. Unapologetic. And despite the danger surrounding them, Adrian felt something steady rise inside him. Not fear. Not doubt. Something stronger. The Unexpected Move They reached the hospital’s central records room. Malcolm Graves was already waiting inside. Everything had been set. Cameras. Access logs. A monitored system designed to track anyone who attempted to retrieve or destroy files. “This is it,” Graves said. “If they take the bait, they’ll come here.” Adrian nodded. “And if they don’t?” Graves’ expression darkened. “They will.” Time passed slowly. Minutes stretched. The room remained still. Then— A soft click. The door opened. All three of them turned at once. A figure stepped inside. For a moment, no one spoke. Because the face standing in the doorway was the last one Adrian expected to see. Recognition hit instantly. And with it— Shock. Because the person who had just walked into the trap… was someone who had stood beside Adrian from the very beginning. But even in that moment— Lily didn’t step back. She moved closer. Her hand tightened around Adrian’s. And without hesitation, without fear of who was watching— She leaned slightly toward him and whispered: “I told you… you’re not facing this alone.” The truth was finally stepping out of the shadows. But what it revealed next… would change everything.
