WHAT REMAINS AFTER DARKNESS

1238 Words
The silence that followed the blackout was louder than any alarm. For a few seconds, no one moved. The monitors remained dead. The system—meticulously prepared, carefully guarded—was gone in an instant. Not corrupted. Not glitched. Erased. Malcolm Graves slammed his palm against the console. “Restart it!” he barked at the IT technician rushing in from the hallway. “It’s not responding,” the technician stammered, fingers flying across the keyboard. “It’s like the entire network’s been wiped from inside—” “From inside,” Graves repeated coldly. His eyes darkened. “He planned this.” Adrian didn’t speak. He stood where Reyes had left him—caught between realization and something far heavier. Memory. That night. The patient. The truth Reyes had hinted at. Lily touched his arm gently. “Adrian…” He didn’t respond immediately. His mind was elsewhere. Then suddenly— He moved. Fast. Decisive. “I know where he’s going,” Adrian said. Graves turned sharply. “What?” Adrian grabbed his coat from the chair. “He didn’t destroy the evidence to escape.” “Then why?” Graves demanded. Adrian’s jaw tightened. “Because there’s something else he doesn’t want us to see.” Lily stepped closer. “Where is he?” Adrian looked at her. “The old surgical wing.” Graves frowned. “That building’s been closed for years.” “Exactly,” Adrian replied. Lily didn’t hesitate. “I’m coming with you.” Adrian turned to her immediately. “No.” “Yes,” she said firmly. “This is bigger than you now.” Graves stepped forward. “She’s right.” Adrian looked between them. For a moment, the weight of everything pressed down on him again. Then he nodded once. “Fine.” The Abandoned Wing The old surgical wing stood at the far end of the hospital compound. Dark. Silent. Forgotten. The doors creaked as Adrian pushed them open. Dust filled the air, disturbed by their presence. Lily wrapped her arms slightly around herself. “This place feels…” she hesitated. “Wrong.” “It was shut down after a series of complications,” Adrian said quietly. “No one comes here anymore.” Graves stepped in behind them, his phone light cutting through the darkness. “Which makes it the perfect place to hide something.” They moved deeper into the hallway. Each step echoed. Each breath felt louder. Then— A sound. Faint. Metal against metal. They froze. Adrian moved first, following the sound. It led them to one of the old operating rooms. The door was slightly open. Light spilled from inside. Adrian pushed it open slowly. And there he was. Dr. Daniel Reyes. Standing beside an old operating table. But he wasn’t alone. Someone else was in the room. Unconscious. Lying on the table. Lily gasped softly. “That’s—” “Yes,” Graves said, stepping forward. “It’s him.” The man on the table was the same person whose identity had been used in the falsified records. The “dead” man. Except— He wasn’t dead. Not anymore. Reyes turned to face them. “You’re faster than I expected,” he said calmly. Adrian stepped forward. “What is this?” Reyes gestured toward the man. “The truth.” Lily shook her head. “You said he died.” Reyes’ expression didn’t change. “He was supposed to.” The words sent a chill through the room. Graves’ voice hardened. “Start explaining.” Reyes exhaled slowly. “Three years ago, that man on the table was not just a patient.” He looked directly at Adrian. “He was a liability.” Adrian’s eyes narrowed. “What does that mean?” “It means,” Reyes continued, “his survival would have exposed something far worse than malpractice.” Silence. Lily stepped closer to Adrian. “What are you saying?” Reyes’ gaze flickered between them. “I’m saying his death was necessary.” Adrian felt anger surge. “You don’t get to decide that.” Reyes tilted his head slightly. “Don’t I?” Graves stepped forward. “This is over, Reyes.” But Reyes didn’t react. Instead, he reached toward a tray beside him. And picked up a syringe. Lily’s breath caught. “What are you doing?” Reyes looked at Adrian. “This is the part where everything changes.” Adrian took a step forward. “Put that down.” Reyes smiled faintly. “You still think this is about saving yourself.” “It is,” Adrian shot back. “No,” Reyes said quietly. “It’s about deciding what kind of truth the world gets to see.” And before anyone could stop him— He injected the syringe into the man’s arm. The reaction was immediate. The man’s body jolted. His eyes snapped open. A sharp, broken breath escaped his lips. Alive. Fully conscious. Graves stepped back in shock. “What have you done?” Reyes didn’t answer. Instead, he stepped aside. “Ask him,” he said. Adrian moved closer to the table. The man’s eyes darted wildly, trying to focus. Then— They landed on Adrian. Recognition hit instantly. And with it— Fear. “Y-you…” the man stammered. Adrian’s voice was steady. “What happened that night?” The man shook his head weakly. “I wasn’t supposed to—” His voice broke. Reyes watched silently. Lily stood beside Adrian now, her hand gripping his arm tightly. “You can tell us,” she said softly. The man looked at her. Something in her voice steadied him. Then— He spoke. “It wasn’t an accident…” The room went still. Adrian’s pulse quickened. “What wasn’t?” The man swallowed hard. “My condition… the surgery…” His eyes flickered toward Reyes. Then back to Adrian. “It was planned.” Graves stepped forward sharply. “By who?” The man hesitated. Reyes’ expression remained unreadable. Lily leaned closer to Adrian. “This is it…” The man opened his mouth to speak— And then— Everything stopped. Because Reyes suddenly moved. Fast. Unexpected. He grabbed the power cable connected to the operating equipment— And ripped it out. The room went dark again. Only this time— It wasn’t just the system. It was everything. In the confusion, in the darkness— A single sound echoed. A door slamming shut. By the time the emergency lights flickered back on— Reyes was gone. Again. And so was the man on the table. Lily’s grip tightened around Adrian. “He took him.” Adrian stared at the empty space where the truth had just been. His voice was low. “He’s not running.” Graves looked at him. “Then what is he doing?” Adrian’s eyes hardened. “He’s deciding how this story ends.” Lily looked up at him. “And us?” Adrian turned slightly toward her. For a brief moment, despite everything— Their eyes held. Close. Dangerously close. “We’re going to make sure he doesn’t get to decide alone.” But somewhere in the darkness beyond that abandoned wing— Dr. Daniel Reyes was already making his next move. And whatever decision he had just made… would change not just the case— But all of their lives forever.
