The Break-In
Vivian’s POV
The sound of the crash was deafening, echoing through the villa like a warning bell. My heart leapt into my throat as Alessandro froze, his sharp eyes darting toward the noise.
"Stay here," he commanded, his voice low but firm. He grabbed a sleek black pistol from the desk drawer, his movements quick and precise.
"Alessandro, wait!" I whispered urgently, grabbing his arm. My nails dug into his sleeve. "What if they"
He placed a hand on my shoulder, his grip steady but gentle. "I’ll handle it. Don’t move. Lock the door behind me."
I shook my head, fear and adrenaline surging through me. "You can’t do this alone! What if"
He cut me off with a fierce look, his dark eyes glinting. "Trust me. I’ll protect you."
Before I could argue, he slipped out of the room, shutting the door softly behind him. The sound of the lock clicking into place was the only thing anchoring me to reality. My chest tightened as panic clawed at me. I wanted to scream, to run after him, but I knew I’d only make things worse.
The villa was so silent now, save for the faint shuffle of footsteps in the distance. Every creak of the wooden floors, every whisper of the wind against the windows sent shivers down my spine. My hands trembled as I clutched the edge of the desk, trying to steady my breathing.
Minutes felt like hours. My mind raced with terrifying possibilities. Who had broken in? Was it my father’s men? Or worse, Luca DeLuca?
Suddenly, a loud thud reverberated through the house, followed by the muffled sound of Alessandro’s voice. My pulse quickened. Something was wrong.
I couldn’t stay put any longer. Grabbing a small letter opener from the desk the only weapon I could find I unlocked the door and stepped into the hallway. The air felt heavy, charged with danger.
The corridor stretched before me, dimly lit by a single wall sconce. Shadows flickered across the walls, playing tricks on my already frazzled nerves. I moved slowly, my bare feet silent against the cold floor.
As I approached the living room, I heard voices. Low and menacing, they sent chills down my spine.
"Where is she?" a man growled. His accent was thick, his tone dripping with malice.
"I told you, she’s not here," Alessandro’s voice replied, steady but strained.
Peering around the corner, I saw Alessandro standing in the middle of the room, his gun trained on a man dressed in all black. Two other men flanked him, both armed and wearing grim expressions.
My breath caught. Alessandro looked calm, but I could see the tension in his stance and the slight clench of his jaw. He was outnumbered.
"We know she’s here," the leader sneered. He took a step closer, his gun aimed squarely at Alessandro. "Hand her over, and we’ll make this quick. Resist, and you’ll both regret it."
Alessandro smirked, though it didn’t reach his eyes. "You’re making a mistake. Walk away while you still can."
The man laughed, a cold, hollow sound. "You think you’re in control here? You’re just another pawn. And pawns are disposable."
My fingers tightened around the letter opener as a surge of fear and anger coursed through me. Alessandro was risking his life for me, and I couldn’t just stand by and watch.
Before I could think twice, I stepped into the room. "Stop!" I shouted, my voice shaking but loud enough to make the men turn.
"Vivian, no!" Alessandro barked, his eyes wide with alarm.
The leader’s gaze snapped to me, a twisted grin spreading across his face. "There you are. Thought you could hide forever, huh?"
I swallowed hard, forcing myself to stand tall. "Leave him out of this. I’m the one you want."
"Vivian, don’t," Alessandro warned, his voice laced with desperation.
But it was too late. The leader motioned to one of his men, who lunged toward me. I stumbled back, swinging the letter opener wildly. It grazed the man’s arm, making him hiss in pain, but it wasn’t enough to stop him.
He grabbed me, his grip like iron. I struggled, kicking and thrashing, but he dragged me toward the door.
"Let her go!" Alessandro roared. He moved to intervene, but the leader pressed his gun to Alessandro’s chest, stopping him in his tracks.
"One more step, and you’re dead," the man snarled.
Tears blurred my vision as I twisted in the thug’s grasp. "Alessandro!"
His eyes met mine, filled with rage and helplessness. "I’ll find you," he promised, his voice breaking. "I swear, I’ll find you!"
The men dragged me out of the villa, their grip bruising. The cold night air bit at my skin as they shoved me into the back of a black SUV.
As the car sped off, I pressed my face to the window, watching the villa disappear into the distance. My chest heaved with sobs, terror gripping me like a vice.
What would they do to me? And would Alessandro be able to save me?
I had never felt so alone. So powerless. So afraid.
And for the first time, I truly understood the depth of the danger I was in.
