Jake’s POV
“Max, hurry the f**k up dude.” I practically screamed- God was he slow. All my mind could concentrate on was this strange feeling in my chest and getting any little clue to help make this practically impossible mission even the slightest bit easier.
“I’m coming hold on!” Max screamed back, I could hear his heavy footsteps coming down the stairs as my parents met us in the living room. Like earlier, I sat on the couch this time with Max beside me while they sat together.
“Is this about the lost girl?” My mom asked, smirking proudly at the thought of me finally listening to them for once.
I rolled my eyes, silently giving them their answer, “It is,” I responded.
“Do you know anything else about her or her family?” Max suddenly bud in, he treated the entire situation as if it were an episode of Criminal Minds or CSI. “Maybe the color of her hair, what she looked like, her name, or if she has any siblings?”
I scoffed, “Holy s**t dude, this isn’t a missing person’s case.”
“Well.” My dad chimed in, “If you think about it, it kind of is.”
My mom chuckled, “No, we don’t know her name, or if she had a sibling- but the old crone said she was very young at the time and had hair like snow, and her family’s last name was Rain.”
Hair like snow..
My heart pounded as my imagination ran wild trying to piece an image of her together.
“Hmm I remember...” I began, my voice trailing off as tried to pry a memory open. Suddenly, I was back again, I seemed to be about nine. As I ran around playing with my friends two girls sprinted passed us, all I remember was her blushed cheeks and that snowy hair.
My parents and Max’s ears perked up, “I remember seeing her once when I was little. I only can remember her hair though, I remember thinking how strange it was because none of the other kids had hair that color.”
“Ah, you see Jakey-“ My mom teased, smiling widely as she playfully poked at Charlie. “Keep digging, your wolf will help you if you let him.”
“It hurts at first, allowing your wolf in, but you need his instincts to find her son.” Charlie added.
I was such a late bloomer compared to even Max, my parents chalked it up to not finding my mate on time- so did I honestly.
Max cleared his throat, “Bane came through for a second..” Bane was Max’s wolf counterpart, he’d already found his mate a couple years ago and was able to shift with ease after awhile. “He said I shouldn’t help you do this...”
I turned, my eyes widen as i glared at him, “What does he mean you shouldn’t help me?”
Max shrugged, “I mean, he didn’t say, but i mean I’m too invested now.” He chuckled, resting into the backing of the couch. “I’m seeing this through.”
“Maybe Bane knows this is how Jake is finally going to get to know his wolf.” Eva said, shrugging herself as she turned to my dad.
“Don’t look at me,” Charlie muttered, “I’m not in control of Bane.” Turning his attention back to us, “But if I were you two, I’d go see the crone. That’s where you’ll get your answers.”
Immediately, I stood my seat, signaling Max to follow as we headed outside.
“We’ll be back!” I yelled to my parents, making it out the door before I could even hear my mom tell me her usual bye and my dad shoo-ing us away.
“You know where the old lady lives right?” Max asked while pulling out his car keys, the car beeping as he unlocked the doors. “Because I haven’t been there since we were kids.”
I nodded, “Yeah, I know where the place is- just get in and drive.”
~~~
After what felt like an eternity, we pulled into her driveway- the sun was setting, creating this off putting atmosphere. It felt like a forest of trees surrounded the crone’s house, bare branches dangled above the driveway, the sound of owls hooting and the flapping of their wings made the haunting feel of it even more intense.
Max turned to me shortly as he drove, “Dude what the fuck.” He chuckled nervously, turning his eyes back to the house as we parked. “This is how we get murdered.”
I rolled my eyes, “Oh yeah, cause the pack crazy is definitely going to try to murder the next Alpha.” I scoffed, smacking his arm, “Stop being a p***y man. Let’s go already.”
Max groaned, throwing his head back before opening his door reluctantly, knowing I was right.
As we stepped out of the car, just as we shut our doors the sudden creaking of a heavy, wooden door caught our attention. The front door was opened- revealing a dim, orange light beamed from inside the house.
“What the fuck..” I hummed as we walked closer.
Max opened his mouth to speak when the floor boards inside creaked as the old lady peaked out, immediately laying her eyes- well one good eye on us.
Though I was next in line and apart of one of the strongest wolf bloodlines, her appearance was startling. She had on a tattered black dress, long greyed hair that was braided to her waist, and mostly her eyes were anxiety inducing to say the least as one was pure white and almost seemed to be scratched out almost- a large scar went from her eyebrow down her cheek- while the other eye seemed to be jet black.
“You’re Charlie’s boy, aren’t you?” She asked, stepping outside- holding onto her wooden cane.
I instantly nodded, afraid if I didn’t reply hastily it would upset her and I’d end up back at square one. “Yeah- I mean, yes ma’am.” Max turned to me, knowing it was a moment where his silence was needed, “I came here to-“
Just as I began, she stopped me with soft laughter, gesturing us to come in.
“No need to be so formal boy.” She retorted, “You’re here to find the lost girl. I knew you’d come someday soon.” Her tone was soft, yet her strong intuition made her intimidating.
“Come in- I’ll tell you everything I can.”
