XIII. Attacked

Trigger Warning: Please proceed only if you are comfortable! We walked for a bit, back down the hallways I got lost in. We got to his room and he threw me into the darkness, causing me to tumble to the floor. He stepped in after me, placing a lock on the door. f**k, I wasn’t getting out of here anytime soon. “Please.” I whimpered, scooting away, fumbling in the darkness for something to defend myself.             “You’re really so pathetic.” He laughed. He kicked me in the stomach then I felt him grab my arm and pull me up.             “Let me go you bastard!” I screamed.             “Go ahead and scream all you want. No one’s going to help you. They’ll all just think that you’re another w***e. The reality is that’s all you really are.” I swung my arm to hit him, but he grabbed it and tied it to the bedposts.             “No, please don’t do this.” I started screaming for help, but he ignored me and tied my other hand up. Tears of fear were streaming down my cheeks and I was powerless to stop them. I kept screaming before I was struck on my left cheek. I screamed out in pain before a hand was placed on my mouth.             “Stop. f*****g. Screaming.”  He said, accentuating each word. I kept screaming but the sounds were muffled by his hand. He started to unbutton my shirt, revealing the thin slip underneath. He became impatient and ripped the rest, causing the buttons to fly everywhere. He moved onto my skirt next, reaching behind me and attempting to unbutton it. Unfortunately, he couldn’t unhook the small buttons, so he moved his hands back to the front and ripped the skirt far enough to slide it off. I started screaming even louder trying to stop what was happening. When he finally lifted off of me enough to free my legs, I kicked him hard in his groin area. He doubled over, falling off the bed while I worked to free my hands. “You bitch.” He said painfully as he used the bed to help him up. “I was going to make this quick and easy, but now I think I’m going to draw it out.”             I knew I could get these ropes off of my wrists if I just had so more time. I kept pulling against them, feeling my wrist start to rub raw beneath them. I finally got one to break before he could get back up. I quickly untied my other wrist and rolled off onto the other side of the bed. I made a beeline for the door, but the asshole put a padlock on it. I started banging against it and screaming for someone to help me. I felt him grab my waist and pull me back toward the bed.             “No! Let me go!” I screamed, kicking him. Suddenly the room lit up as the door and the light blinded me. My eyes were already sensitive from crying. I covered my eyes with my hands until I was suddenly dropped on the ground as the hands on my waist released me. I screamed in pain from being dropped as I rolled on my side curling up into a ball. I heard some yelling and fighting, and I covered my head as something glass smashed near me. I felt someone go to pull me up. “Please, don’t hurt me,” I said through my sobs. The person picked me up and carried me bridal style out of the room. My vision was struggling to readjust through the tears and with the light. By the time my eyesight finally recovered, I realized I had no idea who was carrying me. “Who are you,” I said softly.             “Just a guard helping out. I recognized your voice when you were screaming. Don’t worry, I’m taking you back to your room and I’ll explain everything to the king.”             “Can I walk, please? I hate being carried around everywhere.” He laughed and set me down.             “Stay close to me. We don’t need you getting lost again.”             “It wouldn’t happen if you all didn’t make everything so complicated, including the halls.” He laughed and started walking at a pace I could keep up with. Before I knew it, we got to my room. He opened the door to my room and Daniel grabbed me.             “Where have you been? Where are your clothes? I told you to stay put! Can’t you listen?” He screamed at me, grabbing my already bruised arms. I winced in pain as he realized how bruised my body was. “What the f**k happened?” He said slightly angry as he looked at my bruises and cuts. He pushed the cuffs up slightly on my arms to see where my arms had burns on it from the ropes. I pulled back and walked over to the couch and sat down, using the back to support me. The guard I was with pulled Daniel aside and started explaining what happened. The adrenaline from everything was starting to wear off and I started to feel my injuries more. I shifted slightly and winced in pain. I was so tired but couldn’t force myself to fall asleep. Daniel ordered something in a harsh whisper and the guard left. He came and squatted down in front of me.             “Are you okay?” I shook my head. “Do you—”             “I don’t want to talk about it right now,” I said, interrupting him. He nodded his head and stood up.             “I’ll have someone draw you a bath and I’ll get the doctor in here to help with your injuries.” He walked out of the room and came back a second later. He walked over to the closet and came out with some new nightclothes and set them in the bathroom. A maid came in and filled the bathtub. When it was done Daniel came out and motioned for me to get up.             “I don’t know if I can walk on my own right now. The adrenaline has worn off and I can feel everything now.” Daniel came over and helped me off the couch and to the bathroom. He set me on the chair next to the tub and left. I was grateful that he didn’t stay because I didn’t need extra embarrassment today. I quickly took off the thin slip I was wearing and slowly stepped in the bathtub, wincing as the water hit some of the cuts. I soaked until the water turned cold. I tried to lift myself up but my arms gave out and I slipped back into the tub with a small cry for help. My head submerged under the cold water. Daniel came rushing in as I struggled to pull myself up. I draped my arms over the side of the tub, and he came over, lifted me out, and wrapped a towel around me. My feet slipped under me, but he caught me and picked me up.             “I’m not a child, I can walk,” I said angrily.             “Obviously not,” He chuckled, “You’re always falling.” I sighed in defeat as he carried me out to the room and set me down on the couch. He slipped the dress on over the towel and then took the towel away. The doctor walked in and set his bag next to me.             “Twice in one day, I’ll put that down as a record Adalaide,” Christopher said. I mustered up a weak smile as he began to apply some cream to my injuries. Some of the bruises, like the ones on my upper arms, were rather large. The burns on my wrists stung as he applied a burn relief cream and wrapped both my wrists in bandages. “How on earth did you manage to burn your wrists so badly?”             “I’m trained in these things. Nothing comes without a price though.” He finished up treating my wounds and gave me two pills.             “These will help you sleep. I think you might need it after today, although you don’t have to take them.” I closed them in my fist and nodded.             “Thank you,” I said quietly. He nodded and packed up his bag. Before he left, he stopped and spoke to Daniel. I walked over to the bed and sat down. I kept rethinking the events from standing and waiting for Daniel to being picked up by the guard. I started shaking as I thought about his hands on my body, ripping off my clothes. What would have happened if I wouldn’t have gotten my hands free of the ropes? What if I would have kept running when I got free the first time. I felt tears hitting my hands in my lap. I didn’t move to wipe them from my eyes, I just sat there like a statue. I heard the door shut and footsteps come closer to me. Daniel took my hands and looked at me.             “You need to take those pills.” I shook my head. “Please, it will help you forget for now.”             “I don’t want to forget!” I snapped at him. “I need to remember this, so I’m not caught off guard next time.”             “There won’t be a next time.” He said angrily.             “This shouldn’t have happened this time!” I shouted. “I’m surrounded by more enemies here than I was in the human world.”             “I’ll make sure I have a guard with you at all times from now on. Now, please take the pills.” He said handing me a glass of water.             “One condition, if I promise to try and control my temper can you please take off the extra cuff. If I didn’t have it on, I could have defended myself today.” Daniel sighed. He reached in his pocket and unlocked the cuff on my right hand. I winced in pain as it slightly hit the burn on my wrist. “Thank you,” I whispered, dropping it back to my lap.             “One magic-induced tantrum and it goes back on.” He reached up and lightly brushed my cheek causing me to jump back.             “I’m sorry, it’s just still so fresh.” I sighed, with more tears falling down my eyes. Daniel nodded and walked to the couch, grabbed a blanket, the wrapped it around me when he came back.             “Take at least one of those, it will help you calm down at least.” I hadn’t realized I was still shaking; he must have thought I was cold. I decided to take both of the pills. I set the glass of water on the table beside the bed and sunk under the blankets on the bed. I felt the pills kick in about ten minutes later as I fought to stay awake. I was almost asleep when I felt Daniel lay down and place his arm around me. I jumped out of bed and yelped quietly. Daniel sat up and looked at me.             “I’m fine. I think I’ll just sleep on the couch for now.” I started shaking again remembering what had happened.             “Adalaide, I’m sorry. Please just sleep up here.” I shook my head and grabbed a pillow and the blanket he grabbed earlier and walked to the couch. I was asleep within a few minutes.
