VANESSA SUMMERS
If someone had told me I would end up getting hired as the secretary to a billionaire, I would have called them crazy; insane ― cuckoo.
It was a twist of fate that I definitely didn’t deserve but I was grateful nonetheless.
Mr. Bob had told me his boss (and best friend as he put it) could be difficult. He warned me to act natural and expect the worst yet I wasn’t prepared for what I saw when I walked into his office. He was a dangerously handsome man.
His blonde hair and perfect blue eyes had made me nervous at first but I recovered fast when I remembered what Mr. Bob had said. He had tried to unnerve me getting in my space but I had been strong in my conviction. Why not? I need the job…
Kelvin was away when I got back to the apartment. He was probably hanging out with his good for nothing friends. I’d tried to tell him in no certain way to find new friends but he was difficult. His friends weren’t doing anything with their lives and neither was he. I hoped ripping him from the circle would be a step in the right direction but he was comfortable with them.
I sighed feeling the full weight of exhaustion in my bones. I craved a cold shower, some hot coco, and a massage but not in that order. I’d be grateful if the coco came first.
Kelvin’s number went straight to voicemail just like I knew it would. He was the least dependable person when you needed him around.
My whole body ached and I didn’t need a crystal ball to know I was getting the shower first after all. I took off my dirty clothes and settled on the ground for a moment; my body needed to cool.
Mr. Phineas, my new boss had given me the weekend off since it was Friday, I’d resume on Monday. It all still felt like a dream to me. I tried to imagine Kelvin’s reaction when I told him what had happened.
My phone buzzed on the sofa where I left it. I grumbled thinking about how I was going to be able to get my ass off the ground long enough to grab my phone. It came as a relief when the buzzing stopped.
Thank you, Lord! I muttered.
A second later the buzzing started again but this time I knew it wouldn’t go away easily so I rolled over, crawled halfway, and got to the phone. Zoey.
“Zo! I was just about to call you.” I was talking too fast. “Something crazy happened earlier today.”
“Not as crazy as what’s happening right now.”
“Huh?” I switched the phone to my left side.
“Remember Shanon? She does my hair at the salon.”
“Oh. I remember.” I said even though I didn’t quite remember.
Zoe always thought I knew everyone. Sure I was smart but not everyone I saw was worth remembering. Most of them weren’t even worth a thought.
“So Shanon took me over to the club, Edge, for a thing with her friend and guess who I saw?”
She knew I couldn’t guess. I sucked at guessing and even though I waited for her to say the name, she stalled. The silence was unbearable.
Winnie the Pooh? Indiana Jones? b***h say it already!!!
“You wouldn’t believe it.” She added.
A longer pause followed stretching my endurance for the suspense thin.
“Who did you see?” I snapped.
“Kelvin!” Her voice came to my ear clear without any interference.
“I thought I just heard you say Kelvin. As in Kelvin, the guy I’m supposed to be in a relationship with?”
“You heard correctly.” She said, “That Kelvin.”
I knew where Edge was. It wasn’t that far from the apartment. It was literally a cab ride away but the big question was if it was worth it making the trip. What was the crime if Kelvin wanted to unwind in a club without me?
“Here’s the pinch. There’s a b***h all over him.” This was followed by a pause and some movements. “Scratch that, Ness. There’s two bitches now.”
I tried to imagine Kelvin in the club with women. It would be easy to picture that if we were talking about the old Kelvin but the Kelvin I knew now was different; at least I thought I was. I wasn’t so sure anymore.
“I’ll be there in less than an hour.” I said in a cool flat voice.
The feeling of joy I had been experiencing throughout that day was now gone; completely. All that was left was an empty shallow feeling that left a bitter sour taste in my mouth.
I skipped the shower, got dressed in the first thing I could find in my wardrobe, and I was off to Edge. Zoe met me there. She was talking too fast for my worn out brain to decipher but I knew she was worked out about seeing Kelvin in such a compromising position.
“He’s over there.” She gestured towards the corner.
I could barely see her face with the dim lighting in the club. She pulled my arm as we moved deeper into the club bumping into sweaty bodies. Sure enough Kelvin was there with two women. The blonde one had her hands all over and his body and her clothes barely concealed t**s that looked too big to be natural.
“That’s Kelvin.” I said speaking out loud.
“I know.” Zoe sounded agitated.
Knowing her, she was close to picking up an empty bottle to whack Kelvin. I beat her to it walking over to the table where they were having the time of their miserable lives.
Kelvin looked up and cursed just as his eyes met mine. He knew he had f****d up; majorly.
“Hey Ness.” He said in a cool voice.
He was too calm and his hands were still on the body of the woman. They didn’t seem to care much and I couldn’t blame them but Kelvin. It was as if he didn’t give a rat’s ass that I was there witnessing the whole thing.
“You seem to be having fun.” I grinned tight-faced.
He nodded with a smirk on his face. “It’s literally what I do every other weekend. There’s no biggie.”
His words echoed deep within my subconscious. I tried to think about what he had just said to realize when I had become so blind to the point where I didn’t notice. Maybe I was scared of getting hurt. I think a part of me knew what was happening but I just thought Kelvin was safe. Safe for me.
Not anymore.
“Don’t let me ruin it then.” I turned around.
It’s over…
