[Elara’s POV]
The Grand Hall had cheered for hours. The sound of three thousand wolves chanting my name still echoed in my mind like a beautiful song.
Now, back in the quiet sanctuary of our massive bedroom, the silence felt incredibly intimate. I stood in front of the large mirror, my fingers gently tracing the dark, crescent-shaped scar on the crook of my neck. Kael’s mark. It didn't hurt at all. Instead, it pulsed with a warm, steady, golden energy that connected my soul directly to his.
I could feel him even when I wasn't looking at him. I could feel his overwhelming love, his protective instincts, and a deep, rumbling satisfaction that blanketed my mind.
Strong arms wrapped around my waist from behind, and Kael pulled my back flush against his broad, muscular chest. He buried his face in the crook of my neck, his lips pressing softly against his mark. A purr rumbled deep in his chest, vibrating through my entire body.
"You did perfectly tonight, my Queen," he murmured, his breath sending shivers down my spine. "The pack completely adores you. But not nearly as much as I do."
I leaned back into his embrace, closing my eyes. "I never thought I could feel this safe, Kael. For eighteen years, I was a ghost in my own home. And now..."
"Now, you are the most powerful female in the werewolf realm," Kael finished for me, turning me around to face him. His deep green eyes were incredibly soft. "And I will spend the rest of eternity making sure you never feel like a ghost again."
He leaned down to kiss me, but before our lips could touch, a sharp, frantic knock shattered the peaceful atmosphere of the room.
Kael’s entire demeanor changed in a fraction of a second. The soft, loving mate disappeared, and the lethal, terrifying Alpha King took his place. His eyes flashed a dangerous crimson red, and his jaw clenched tight.
No one, absolutely no one, disturbed the King on the night of a marking ceremony unless it was a matter of life or death.
"Speak," Kael snarled, not even bothering to walk to the door.
The heavy oak door pushed open, and Silas, the Beta, stood there. For the first time since I met the massive, scarred Lycan, he looked genuinely tense. His chest was heaving as if he had sprinted all the way up the castle stairs.
"Forgive me, Alpha. Luna," Silas bowed quickly. "We have an absolute emergency."
Kael stepped protectively in front of me, shielding me with his massive frame. "Report."
"It's the Silver Moon Pack," Silas breathed out. "They are under attack. A massive horde of Rogues just breached their borders. Over three hundred of them, Alpha. Led by Fenrir."
I gasped, my hands flying to my mouth. Fenrir. He was a notorious rogue Alpha, a monster who had been banished from his own pack decades ago for slaughtering children. He gathered the worst, most bloodthirsty wolves in the country.
"The Silver Moon barrier was already weakened from our breach yesterday," Silas continued grimly. "And after we took eighty percent of their winter resources, their warriors are exhausted and demoralized. Fenrir's rogues are slaughtering them, Alpha. They are burning the packhouse. Alpha Richard managed to send an SOS through the Alpha mind-link. He is begging for the Blood Moon's intervention."
The room went deathly cold. The aura radiating from Kael was so dark and suffocating that I had to grab the edge of the dresser to keep my balance.
"Begging for our intervention?" Kael repeated, his voice a low, terrifying whisper. A cruel, merciless smile twisted his lips. "Let them burn."
Silas didn't flinch. "Yes, Alpha."
"Wait!" The word ripped from my throat before I could stop it.
Both Kael and Silas turned to look at me in shock. Kael’s red eyes softened slightly as they landed on me. "Elara, my sweet mate. These are the people who abused you. They starved you. They humiliated you. They threw you out into the snow to die. Why should we shed Blood Moon blood to save a pack of cowards?"
"Because of the pups," I said, my voice shaking at first, but growing stronger with every word. I stepped out from behind Kael, standing tall. "Lucas and Richard deserve to face the consequences of their weakness. But there are innocent children in that packhouse, Kael. There are Omegas hiding in the basement right now, absolutely terrified, who have never hurt anyone. They are just like I was yesterday."
I walked up to Kael and grabbed his large, rough hands, forcing him to look into my eyes.
"If we sit here in our warm, safe castle and let innocent pups and helpless Omegas be torn apart by rogues when we have the power to stop it... then we are no better than Lucas," I said fiercely. "A true King doesn't just punish his enemies, Kael. He protects the weak."
The silence in the room was heavy. Silas stared at me, his mouth slightly open in awe. No one ever dared to argue with King Kael. No one ever dared to question his orders.
Kael stared down at me for a long, intense moment. The crimson slowly faded from his eyes, replaced by that breathtaking forest green. But this time, they were shining with an emotion I hadn't seen before. Pure, unfiltered pride.
He slowly lifted my hand and pressed a kiss to my knuckles.
"Did you hear your Queen, Silas?" Kael’s voice boomed, completely devoid of its previous cruelty, replaced by the commanding roar of a warrior going to battle.
Silas snapped to attention, a massive grin spreading across his scarred face. "Loud and clear, Alpha!"
"Sound the war horns," Kael commanded, his aura expanding, filling the entire castle. "Gather the elite vanguard. Fenrir has been a thorn in my side for far too long. Tonight, we do not just save the Silver Moon Pack. Tonight, we wipe the rogue army off the face of the earth."
"Yes, Alpha!" Silas bowed deeply to Kael, and then, surprisingly, he turned and bowed even deeper to me. "Your mercy honors us, Luna." He turned and sprinted down the hallway.
Seconds later, the deep, terrifying, bone-rattling sound of the Blood Moon war horns echoed through the valley. The castle erupted into chaos as thousands of lethal warriors mobilized for war.
Kael turned to me, his hands cupping my face. "Stay in this room. Keep the door locked. I will leave twenty of my best Royal Guards at your door. Do not come out until I return."
"Be careful," I whispered, the reality of war suddenly terrifying me.
Kael smirked, his fangs extending slightly in anticipation of the bloodbath. "I am the nightmare they are afraid of, little wolf. I will be back before sunrise."
