I flew to New York on our private jet to my cousin’s compound. I had several men with me. As Don, I always traveled with guards. You never know when an assassination attempt could be just around the corner.
But my cousin was not interested in being Don. She wanted peace and her family to be able to do the same thing that I had just accomplished. It was unusual for a woman to be the head of the family, but my uncle named his oldest daughter as heir after my cousin, Michael, who was gunned down by his enemy.
It was Alessia that sought revenge and wiped out the enemy’s entire bloodline. She is as ruthless as her mother. My zia, Lucia, was born and raised in Sicily. The historic heartland of Cosa Nostra. There were stories that we heard as children that my zia was an actual assassin sent to kill my zio Roberto.
But as the old love story goes, she fell in love with him. She returned to Sicily and killed the man that hired her to kill zio Roberto. She had to eliminate the bounty by killing the origin.
Zio Roberto & zia Lucia had lived in solace after Michael was gunned down. It was a professional hit. We know it. Alessia has been looking for his killer. I was meeting with her to offer a partnership in my legal businesses. She has the dock with export and import support. I have the necessary personnel in the right places to make sure everything stays legal.
I pulled her at her estate. It was large and cold looking during the day, a gilded age mansion. It still sits in the upper eastside of New York. During the winter, at night, it is a beautiful sight. Large trees and snow-covered grounds. The house lit up at Christmas time is absolutely beautiful. Historic grand elegant windows had, giving it a vintage view of luxury.
Decorative landscaping. Lights that line the driveway and walking path to the horse stalls outback. There still stands a small chapel that was on the property when my uncle purchased it. My zia could not allow history to be destroyed, so my uncle had it refurbished to keep the charm for my zia as a gift.
My driver parked and opened my door. I looked up and Alessia was at the door smiling. “Cousin, it has been far too long. Come inside, come inside.” She reminded me of a giddy teenager.
She took my elbow at the door, “How is Cassandra? And your boys? I was so happy that you were able to track her down. She is a good woman. Far better than that tramp of a sister of hers. Now tell me everything.”
I laughed, and we sat in her office talking about having coffee and cannoli that her chef had made. Chef Marianna has been with the family since zio Roberto brought her with him when he married Zia Lucia.
“Now that we have the pleasantries done. I would like to ask you for permission to hire Cassandra to track down Michael’s killer. I have heard about her skills.”
“I cannot make those decisions for you. She is her own boss. Call her. Here, use my phone.” I handed her my phone.
“Santino, amore mio. I swear I did not mean to spend that much on the equipment. I can explain.” Cassandra sounded nervous and she giggled.
“My love, I do not care how much you spend. Just get with what you need. I am here at Alessia’s, and she has a question for you.” I laughed and gestured for Alessia to speak.
“Cassandra darling, I have a job offer for you. I would like to contract you to find Michael’s killer.”
“Alessia, you offend me saying job offer. Send me what you have, and I will start working. You are family, my dear.”
“Cassandra, you are my only hope. I have gone through just about every contact and source. I kept running into a brick wall.”
“Well cousin, sometimes you have to have the right bulldozer to break through those brick walls. I will start digging as soon as I get the file. I will do my best. Love you Alessia. If you ever need anything, anything just call me or Santino.” Cassandra murmured.
I said my goodbyes to her and looked back at Alessia. “Now, business. Let’s talk shop.” I spoke. We had lunch and completed our agreement. I had to get back to my family. I had an uneasy feeling that started creeping in my bones on the flight back.
It was close to five thirty, my car was delayed to traffic. I waited in the jet until the car arrived. I got into the back of the car and the privacy window was up. I rolled it down and my usual driver was not in his seat. “Where is Carlo?” I questioned.
“Oh, Carlo had an accident. I will drive you to your destination.” The burly man in the driver’s seat growled.
I reached for the door handle and nothing. The damn handle was missing. My guard was reaching for the passenger door in the front when the driver rolled the window down and fired a shot. My guard went down as the car sped off.
I lunged forward as the privacy glass was going back up. What the actual f**k?
I tried to use my phone to call Gio or Gerard.
“Oh, sorry. You will not be able to use your phone. I have this nice little box up here that scrambles cell phone. And just in case you are wondering, I am taking you to your next meeting. My lady has a request, and it must be said in person.”
It has been almost two weeks since we had anything on Dahlia. She was like a snake slithering here and there. His lady. I knew it was that lying b***h.
“Whatever she is paying you, I will double it. No questions.”
“Sorry, Don Fusco, no can do. She has my wife. My wife is pregnant with my twins. I cannot risk it. I have no idea where she is keeping my wife.”
I pulled out my pocketknife and worked on the door handle. I also had a gun stored in the seat cushion. I may have to shoot my way out of my own damn car.
The window came down. “Please sir. Just work with me. You know who I speak of. She is batshit crazy! She is watching on video as we drive to the destination point.”
“But can she hear us?”
“No sir.”
“Okay, my wife is very good with computers. Let me get word to her, and she will locate your wife, and she will send someone for your wife. What do you say?”
“Will you save her?”
