The morning of my twenty-ninth birthday was just like any other day for me – a day I'd rather forget. I'd never been a fan of birthdays; they were a reminder of the years passing by and the weight of responsibility that came with growing older. I wanted nothing more than to stay in my room and avoid anyone who might know it was my birthday, which, realistically, was limited to Alex, and maybe my father and Marie.
