FORBIDDEN DESIRES Chapter 3: Shadows in the Glass Ellen’s POV The fire escape door rattled under the soft, metallic taps of a man’s fingers, each movement deliberate, precise. My breath caught as I peered through the thin curtain. The city’s neon glow barely touched the shadowed figure crouched below my fifth-floor window. His dark hoodie masked his features, but his eyes, when they met mine, burned with unsettling calm. My phone slipped from my trembling hand, clattering against the hardwood floor. For a heartbeat, I considered screaming. Instead, I grabbed the small brass lamp on my bedside table, clutching it like a weapon. The door to my apartment creaked open, slow and ominous. He stepped inside, his presence filling the room like a storm about to break. Before I could react, he raised a finger to his lips. “Quiet,” he said his voice a low rasp, gravel mixed with silk. “You’re in deeper than you think.” Questions spun through my mind who was he? Friend or foe? Ally or assassin? But the panic had already begun to settle into a strange, icy resolve. “Why are you here?” I whispered, keeping my voice steady despite the racing in my chest. He studied me for a long moment, eyes sharp, calculating. “Because someone wants you dead. And Damien Blackwood isn’t the only one playing for blood.” The weight of his words pressed down on me. I thought the world was only black and white the Sinclair legacy against the Blackwood empire. But this? This was a darker shade of grey. “Who sent you?”I demanded. A ghost of a smile tugged at his lips. “I don’t answer questions. Not yet.” Suddenly, footsteps echoed in the hallway outside. He grabbed my wrist, firm and quick, pulling me toward the window. “Come,” he whispered urgently. Together, we slipped out onto the fire escape. The night air bit into my skin as we moved swiftly down the metal stairs, away from the apartment and into the city’s sleeping arms. Below, a black SUV waited in the shadow of the building. The man glanced up at me, “Get in. Fast.” Once inside the vehicle, my mind reeled. I barely had time to question my captor before the engine roared to life and the car sped into the night. He finally removed his hood, revealing a rugged face marked by a jagged scar across his cheek and ice-blue eyes that seemed to see right through her. “I’m Rio,” he said, voice low and steady. “Rio,” I repeated, my heart pounding. “What do you want with me?” He looked ahead, hands gripping the wheel. “I’m here to warn you. Damien Blackwood’s reach is wider than you realize. You’re not just fighting him anymore. There are others people with grudges, debts, and vendettas who want you gone.” The man who told him he would pay It all made sense now I had stepped into a war zone. “Why help me?” I asked, eyes narrowing. “Because your fight is my fight.” “You want Blackwood down right?” Rio replied. “And if Blackwood falls,it’s a win win for us both . Blackwood did me dirty and it’s high time he pays .chaos will reign and we’ll all drown in it.” The SUV screeched to a halt in an underground garage. Rio led me through a labyrinth of tunnels until we reached a hidden door marked only by a faded symbol a black wolf’s head. “This is my sanctuary,” Rio said. “A place where I’ve been gathering people like you people who’ve been wronged by Blackwood and those who lurk in his shadow.” A damp concrete smell hit me first before the scrape of a folding chair I stepped inside to find a group of diverse faces men and women hardened by battle, each carrying their own scars and stories. Some looked at me with hope; others with suspicion. “Who are you?” I asked. “We’re the ones who won’t stay silent anymore,” Rio said, locking the door behind us. “And we’re going to take him down.” Days passed in a blur of strategy sessions, secret meetings, and stolen data. I found myself caught between two world, my carefully crafted role as Damien’s assistant and this dangerous new alliance that promised revenge and revolution. But the deeper I went, the more complicated everything became. Damien was no longer just a villain; he was a man with secrets that stretched beyond my understanding secrets Rio hinted at but refused to fully reveal. And then came the message that shattered the fragile balance: My phone buzzed with an encrypted file an audio recording. The voice on the tape was unmistakable. My father. But he wasn’t speaking from a past memory or old interview. This was recent. Urgent. And chilling. “My daughter… if you’re hearing this, it means they succeeded in silencing me. But they don’t know everything. There’s a ledger hidden where no one would think to look that holds the truth. Find it. And be careful. Damien’s darkness runs deeper than you realize.” The recording Ended mid breath. My phone buzzed again My blood ran cold as a second message popped up on my screen. UNKNOWN: They’re coming for you. The ledger is the key. Don’t trust anyone. Then I thought “Where would dad hide such a ledger” The faint Echo of footsteps hit the corridor outside the safehouse, the faintest sound of footsteps echoed against the concrete walls. Then a key scraped once at the outer lock. Someone paused .A shadow moved under the door . The lock CLICKED .The Door handle turned And this time, there was no warning.
