Freya
I pulled up into the church parking lot as I alighted my car abruptly, it had been a long hour drive down to the wedding venue. I was already so exhausted but I wasn't ready to back down now, not when I was this close. I rushed into the church desperately wishing the news wasn’t true, wishing I was mistaken, maybe it was someone else but my eye met my greatest nightmare.
“Yes, I do.” Those were the words that echoed in the building as I entered, the whole crowd stood up in cheers as they celebrated my boyfriend saying his vows to someone else right in front of me. I bit my lower lips in an attempt to fight back the tears that threatened to fall.
The fact that I rushed all the way here only to be faced with such great disappointment hit me in ways I didn't expect…. I never saw this betrayal coming, Leo had only told me that he was attending a wedding this weekend, but he didn't tell me whose wedding, and I also didn't bother asking.
I never knew I would be the one attending his own wedding, at this point I just stood at the entrance in a battle with my mind as the crowd began exiting the building heading to where the reception is to be held.
I desperately scoured the crowd for any sign of Leo, hoping he was going to take the same path, but it turns out he and his bride had already taken the back door. I turned as I made my way with the crowd into the reception venue which wasn't too far from the church.
The amazing decor made me reflect back to the reporter’s words, she was indeed not joking when she talked about the wedding being the biggest in the city. The grand ballroom was transformed into a fairytale-like setting, with crystal chandeliers refracting rainbow hues across the dance floor.
Sparkling crystal glasses and fine silverware added a touch of refinement to each table setting. Everything in this room screamed luxury and Leo was responsible for all this. My eyes wandered through the crowd as I met eyes with them at the far end of the room, receiving handshakes and gifts from the guests.
I joined the line as I waited patiently for my turn, determination surging through my veins. And with a stoic expression I approached the couples doing a good job in masking my feelings.
I didn't need any introduction as I stood in front of them with blazing eyes of fury, but Leo didn't even have an ounce of surprise on his face, it was like he had been expecting me all this while. “He wouldn't have made it public if he didn't know you'd be coming freya,” a voice echoed calmly in my head.
“Hey Freya,” he called casually, like I was just some random homie of his. I stood in awe of the man in front of me, and the lady sitting next to him with a smug face, I mean he was staring at his girlfriend since highschool.
Someone who picked him from the gutters, without me he was nothing and he knew this, and he just sat there staring down at me without any expression.
“I heard she cheated on him,” someone said in a whisper, but I could hear everything they said.
“They'd been lovers since highschool, How could she even do something like that?” Another voice replied.
“Darana said she had always been with him even when he was a pauper,” the third voice added, making me weak in the knees. As if the betrayal wasn't enough, he had already spread fake rumours against me?
My eyes darted back and forth at the newly wedded couples unsure of what to say or do. I didn't know if pouncing I'm then right now would be a great idea, or maybe creating a scene and reading this whole place apart, because technically it was my money and my family's wealth.
At this point my gaze went back to Leo, with just one question in my mind. “Why?” I asked my voice a little above a whisper.
“Come on Freya, don't you think I'm a little above your league now?” He said, his words hitting me like a hammer in my chest.
“Is this dude being serious right now?” The voice in my head echoed with venom at its every word. “Really Leo?” I asked staring down at him, my glares boring into his soul, “is this how it's going to be? You chose her over me?” I asked, my voice lacing with venom of all the feelings clashing within me right now. Anger, betrayal, sadness but the one thing that echoed more above all was revenge.
I wanted to make him pay, “you know what Leo? You're right, I replied, “you're a little above my league now, and it is a good thing you chose someone who befits your standard, because I'm going to make you pay, and that- that's a promise.” I said before taking one last look at Darana, who now had an evil grin on her face.
“Bye b*tch,” she said, waving her hands at me.
“This isn't over Darana, don't forget that I always win.” My gaze boring into hers, “well it doesn't look like it right now, does it?” She replied, placing a light kiss on Leo’s lips in an attempt to piss me off. But I knew better than to break down in front of them, as the tears in my eyes didn't seem like they could hold in any longer.
I turned as I took my leave, my legs weakening at every step I took, but I quickly found my balance until I got outside, and like a volcano about to erupt, all the feelings bottled up inside me bursted out as the tears flowed freely down my cheeks.I ran as fast as my legs could carry me to the parking lot and locked myself inside my car.
Bursting out in tears I hit my head on the steering wheel hoping this was just a nightmare I could wake up from. But it wasn't, it was real, it was all real. At this point I felt so stupid, for giving my whole life to a man, all in the name of love. Right now I didn't even know if I had anymore if that left in me.
I wasted my years chasing someone who wasn't chasing me, “you're so stupid Freya.” I heard the voice in my head once again.
I sat in my car still wallowing in my stupidity, when the buzz from my phone jolted me out of my thoughts. I picked it up but my heart sank the minute I saw who the caller was. It was my dad, once again the weight of my foolishness washed over me. My dad had given me warnings several times about Leo but I was too stupid to see what he saw, and now I didn't know what I was going to say to him.
