Chapter One

Velvet's POV I groaned as I woke up to the familiar snoozing sound of my alarm clock, feeling hungry and giddy, my stomach reminding me that it needed attention. I swung my legs over the side of the bed, my toes curling against the cold floor as I walked towards the bathroom. I took my shower and put on my usual outfit, a black baggy T-shirt and a pair of denim jeans trousers, not forgetting to take my pair of glasses from the side of the bed - before you ask, I'm equally as blind as bat and there's no argument to that. "Vee! Vee! Hurry up! ", Mom's voice echoed through the living room "You're gonna be late for school...it's already past 7" Monday is definitely the most frustrating day of the week - why does it have to arrive so quickly? I muttered to myself, placing my phone in the back pocket of my jeans trousers. I hurriedly descended the stairs, skipping two steps at a time. I grabbed an apple from the fruit stand and made my way out, closing the door behind me. Mum was already revving up the engine and I knew at this moment if I didn't run I would have no other choice but to take the bus. I sprinted towards the car, apple in hand, and hopped in just as Mum was about to drive away. "Phew, that was a close call," I muttered, catching my breath. Mum shot me a knowing look, shaking her head slightly "One of these days, you're gonna miss the ride, Vee." I rolled my eyes playfully, taking a bite of the apple. "Nah, I've got a sixth sense for timing, Mum. No worries." The car ride to school was quiet as usual but it felt comforting– Mom's favourite morning news playing softly on the radio, while I stared out of the window, lost in my own thoughts. The city streets streamed by, a blur of familiar sights. As we pulled up to the school entrance, I quickly finished my apple and gathered my backpack. "Thanks, Mum. Have a great day," I said, giving her a quick peck on the cheek before hopping out of the car. "Love you, Vee. Learn something new today," she replied with a smile, and I nodded, shutting the car door. The school building loomed ahead, a labyrinth of hallways filled with geeks, weirdos, and goths and classrooms that held both the promise of knowledge and the dread of homework. I joined the bustling crowd of students making their way to their classrooms, navigating the familiar corridors, the mingling scent of floor polish and adolescent anxiety filling the air. Locker doors slammed, voices echoed, and the bell rang just as I reached my first class – History with Mr. Brown. The familiar scent of books and chalk filled the air. Mr. Brown, our history teacher, greeted us with his usual enthusiasm. "Good morning, class! I hope you all had a fantastic weekend. Today, we're going to embark on a journey through time, exploring the mysteries of ancient civilizations." I slipped into my seat, near the back as always, and pulled out my notebook, ready to immerse myself in the world of history. I found myself half-listening, my mind drifting. Mondays had that effect on me – they were like a slow-motion train wreck. You know it's coming, and you can't do anything to stop it. The morning classes passed by in a blur, and before I knew it, the lunch bell rang. I joined my friends at our usual table in the cafeteria – Sarah, Lucas, and Emily. We chatted about the weekend and the latest gossip as we dug into our lunches. "Hey, have you guys heard ?" Emily asked, her eyes wide with curiosity."There's a new transfer student" "New student?" Lucas raised an eyebrow. "We rarely get those during this time. Wonder what brought him here." Sarah shrugged. "Who knows? Maybe he's running from the law," she added, gulping down the rest of her orange juice. We all laughed, but my curiosity was piqued. A new student, huh? At the beginning of senior year? That was definitely unusual. My focus was soon interrupted by a tall masculine figure entering the cafeteria. He stood tall, with silky blond hair that fell effortlessly over his piercing blue eyes, which complimented a rugged yet symmetrical face. He had the most perfectly defined jawline which could definitely cut through wood. His presence commanded attention, and the room fell silent as all eyes turned towards him. I turned to look at my friends who were gaping in awe with their jaws wide open at what appeared to be a heavenly figure. He was just a normal transfer student from another school. His gaze swept across the room, and for a brief moment, our eyes met. It was as if time stood still, and in that instant, my heart skipped a beat. I could feel the adrenaline running through my body. He looked perfect and flawless like an angel sent from heaven. The rest of the school day dragged on, the minutes crawling at a snail's pace. By the time the final bell rang, signalling the end of the school day. I was more than ready to escape the confines of this school, as I packed up my bag. I gathered my belongings and headed towards the exit. But before I could reach the door, a voice called out from behind me. "Hey, Velvet! Wait up!" I swiftly turned to the direction the voice came from and it was him, the new guy. For a minute, I was taken aback by the fact that he knew my name -how in the world did this stranger know who I was? He caught up to me, his smile warm and genuine. "I noticed you in the cafeteria today. Mind if I walk you home?" "S-sure" I stammered, confusion written all over my face, feeling a mix of nervousness and a little bit of happiness that he noticed me on his first day. We walked side by side, his arm gently brushing against mine while we engaged in small talk along the way. For a moment, he seemed like a good guy but my instincts kept telling me otherwise. As we reached my house, a sense of relief over me, releasing the tension that had been building up. "Thanks for walking me home, It was nice getting to know you," I said, my voice filled with sincerity as I looked into his eyes. He smiled and replied, "I had a great time Vee. Maybe we can hang out again sometime?" I nodded subconsciously, my heart thudding in my chest. "Yeah, that would be great. Just let me know when you're free." "By the way, I'm Nathan, you can just call me Nate," he casually introduced himself. Closing the door behind me, I locked it and leaned against it, letting out a deep breath With a parting wave, Nathan headed off, leaving me engulfed in a whirlwind of emotions. I stood on the porch for a moment, watching him walk down the street until he disappeared from view. I closed the door behind me, locked it and leaned against it, letting out a deep breath as a smile tugged at the corners of my lips. I went straight to the kitchen, prepared dinner and watched a movie till the evening sunlight slowly faded. I changed into my pajamas and crawled into bed, replaying in my mind all the events of the day. As I drifted off to sleep, I found myself lost in my own thoughts as wondered if this friendship would grow into something more or remain as a brief encounter.
