The talk with the Luna left me with a lot of things to think about. I'm happy that I took her up on her offer, I do feel lighter a bit. However it doesn't mean that I have let it go. I will certainly feel a lot better when I know that the Council has agreed to look in the matter and hopefully help out those who are in need of it. As for going to find the gang and bringing everyone here, I'm not convinced that it's the right course of action. Firstly, I don't know if I'll be able to track them down, we all did go into hiding, remember? Secondly, what if there still are people looking for us and we bring them here? I don't want to make us and the pack an easy target. Ugh, at moments like these I wish I were normal and into dresses, shoes, makeup and boys!
With all these thoughts buzzing in my head I go to sleep with no nightmares for the first time in months. Next morning I get the best news ever - the Alpha is going to have a call with the Council today!!! I'm restless all day and can't concentrate on anything. Lucas got so frustrated with me that he suggested that I skip training today. And I don't argue with him, I just need to know how everything goes with the Council, so I rush back to the pack house. I head to the Alpha's office right away and knock on the door. After hearing "Come in!" I flung it open and step in.
I see that everyone is still there, I'm trying to read their facial expressions but I'm not getting anything. This is so annoying!
"How did it go?" I ask impatiently.
"Pretty much as well as it could have. We reaffirmed the rumors floating around, and they are concerned. By itself it means nothing, but they promised to start investigating. Actually they are sending someone to check out the location you provided us with. We should hear from them again some time next week," the Alpha explains. So far so good! I nod waiting for more information.
"They have also been receiving reports on kids turning up in various parts of the country, most of them are already settled in various packs, covens and human towns. Others will be brought to the Council, they will be taken care of."
I hear the Luna gasp and turn to look at her. "You are smiling!" she says her voice cracking. Her remark surprises me and I touch my lips with my hand. She is right, I really am wearing a broad smile! Well, that doesn't happen very often.
"You should do it more, it suits you!" I guess the Luna really meant it when she said she wanted to see me happy. That's exactly how I'm feeling right now, and who wouldn't be?! There are survivors, they weren't all caught and dragged back to that horrible place. They have a chance to find homes, families, friends, and live their lives the way they want to. I take a deep breath and let it out, air mixed in with some of my doubts and regrets. Not all of them, but baby steps!
"Esme told me about the offer she had made you yesterday. And I want to assure you that it is still standing. We will be happy to welcome your family here." I turn my attention back to the Alpha.
"Unfortunately, it's not that simple. What it by some miracle we are able to find them all, bring them here and those assholes from the Facility follow us? We won't be the only ones in danger. Like you said on numerous occasions before the pack comes first. This is probably the only rule I can't see myself breaking," I try to explain. And I mean every single word. A couple of months ago I wouldn't have cared about Blood Moon, but I'm done with my tunnel vision. My family and I aren't the only people who matter, there are others who deserve to be taken into account. Just like there were other kids at the Facility who I had completely disregarded. And I won't repeat that mistake again, one was one too many.
"Here is where you are mistaken. You won't be breaking the rule, just enforcing it. Whether you realize it or not, you have become part of this pack. It doesn't matter that you're not an official member or that we don't share a mind-link. All these months you've been working hard for the benefit of the pack, and you're obviously putting its interests first. You're not alone, we're in this with you."
I am at a loss for words. How am I supposed react to this? I've never trusted or relied on an adult before. They caused me and the others so much pain. But I also don't want my past to define my present and future. I can't let the Facility win after it took so much from me already.
"I'm not sure that I will be able to find them," I admit.
"It doesn't mean you shouldn't try! When your school year is over Nathan will take you on a road trip. You two will trace back your movements and take it from there. If you get in trouble while doing it, let us know and we'll either send more people your way or reach out to out allies. We might not be a big pack, but we certainly have some weight in the werewolf community."
"Sounds like a plan. If it's not too much trouble for the Beta," I respond looking at him.
"Don't worry about it, Mia! This is important, and you can't go alone," he doesn't sound like he is unhappy with the proposed arrangement.
"Our sons will be back by then, so the Alpha will have plenty of helping hands around here," he says with a smile. That's right, Leo and Ryder will be back from their fancy school that most future Alphas and Betas go to, supposedly to improve their leadership and diplomacy skills. I wonder what kind of combat training they are getting...
"Earth to Mia," the Luna call out to me while waving her hands in front of my face.
"Oh sorry, I was just thinking."
"About your family?"
"No, not really. I was actually thinking about your sons and their combat training. I would really like to spar with them when they get back," I confess.
After a couple of seconds of deafening silence all of them break out in loud laughter.
"Oh my, you're one of a kind, Mia!" I'm pretty sure they are about to start crying that's how hard they are laughing. I huff annoyed, I don't enjoy being made fun of!
"Well, if we are done here, I'll leave you to catch your breath, or else you might pass out!"
"Don't be a grump! I'm sure you'll have as many sparring sessions with them as you want," the Beta tries to appease me while sneakily wiping away tears gathered in the corner of his eyes.
"Uh huh, I have a training to get back to!" I say and storm out of the office. I'm pretty sure that they went back to laughing as soon as I left. It's a good thing I have dozens of people to help me let my steam off, poor unlucky souls!
When I get back to the training ground I assure Lucas that my head is back in the game. What I do here is important, both for me and for the pack, and I won't let them down. And, while doing it, I'll have some fun, just the way I like it. Hopefully, soon I'll have Ricky, Teddy, Rose and Knox by my side. I think they will like it here too. Who knows, maybe this is where we finally find our home...
