A DANGEROUS BARGAIN

1023 Words
The courtroom erupted with outraged cries as the guilty verdict was announced. The judge silenced them with his gavel. I awaited my fate numbly, too hollowed out for fear. “For the murder of Olivia Greene, I hereby sentence you to death, Mr. West.” He slammed the gavel down in finality. As guards led me to death row, Prince Alexander watched from the gallery, his handsome face a mask of cold fury. At least in losing Livvy, we shared common ground. Alone on death row, I closed my eyes, welcoming the end. Soon I would see my darling Livvy again and beg her forgiveness. A fitting end, for death was always destined to be the conclusion of our doomed affair. My only solace was the hope she would be waiting for me on the other side, arms open and heart forgiving. I clung to that hope with every ounce of my soul as the guards came to lead me to my execution. Justice.. POV of the drug lord: The shattered glass and spilled champagne at my feet perfectly reflected the ruin I had just brought upon myself. I stared in disbelief at the prince standing before me, the man I had very nearly murdered tonight. "Damien, are you quite alright?" Prince Alexander asked, brow furrowed in concern. "You seem unwell." I swayed slightly, grasping for some excuse. "Yes, apologies Your Highness. I merely stumbled." He smiled kindly. "Here, let's find a seat for you." The prince guided me to a quiet corner and fetched a glass of water. My mind raced wildly. How could I have been so foolish? Killing royalty would bring consequences too severe even for me. I had to take control of this situation, and quickly. "Prince Alexander, I must confess something to you," I began slowly. "But I beg you to show mercy in your response." He frowned. "What is it, Damien? You have my word I will listen with an open mind." I exhaled, steadying myself. "In my jealousy over your affection for my wife, I attempted something unforgivable tonight. I sought to poison you." The color drained from his face. "Poison me? Preposterous. Why would you make such wild claims?" "Because it's the truth," I said wretchedly. "But I swear to you, the moment I learned your identity, I abandoned my heinous plan. I will accept any punishment you see fit." Prince Alexander was silent, staring at me with searching eyes. "If what you say is true, then you have committed a grievous crime. As royalty, I cannot simply ignore this." My heart stuttered. "Your Highness please, I beg your mercy." He held up a hand. "Let me finish. While this demands justice, by coming forward honestly you have shown true remorse. For that, I am willing to show some lenience." I exhaled, scarcely daring to hope. "You are too kind, Your Highness. Name your price and I will pay it." "I cannot allow an attempted assassination to go unpunished," he mused. "But perhaps there is an alternative to prison. I believe you have come into possession of a certain stolen relic?" My eyes widened. He knew about the bejeweled chalice I had procured from a Turkish client. It was a rare treasure worth a fortune. "Yes, the Suleman Chalice. It is yours, Your Highness, if it will satisfy your justice." I bowed my head in deference. Prince Alexander nodded. "Very well. You will surrender the relic to me immediately. Additionally, you will donate half your wealth to my kingdom's charitable causes. In return, I will pardon this ugly business between us." Relief washed over me in a dizzying wave. "Most merciful and generous," I breathed. He held my gaze sternly. "But if you ever threaten me or my kingdom again, there will be no more mercy. Are we clear?" "Utterly, Your Highness. You have my eternal gratitude and loyalty." With that, Prince Alexander departed. I raced home to retrieve the bejeweled chalice from my vault. If surrendering it secured my freedom, the fortune it was worth meant nothing. In the morning, the city was abuzz with news of the prince's abrupt departure after recovering his kingdom's stolen relic. My name was left out of it, thanks to his mercy. True to my word, I donated a king's ransom to the foreign charities the prince had designated. It pained me to see so much wealth disappear at once. But a small price for my life and future with Livvy. In the days that followed, I lavished my wife with affection. Our bond grew stronger than ever, the prince now an afterthought. My second chance strengthened my devotion to Livvy. Soon after, I was notified the prince's kingdom was pressing charges against me. While he had pardoned my crime, his royal council had no tolerance for any attempt on his life. I was dragged before a courtroom teeming with foreign officials and onlookers. Livvy wept silently in the gallery as Prince Alexander himself testified against me expressionlessly. The evidence was irrefutable. I was sentenced to seven years in the foreign prison. My screams of protest echoed in the silent courtroom as I was dragged away in shackles. The next years were the darkest hell I endured, locked away from my beloved wife and home. But I clung to hope of our reunion. After endless, torturous days, freedom finally dawned. I drank in my first breaths of open air in years. Livvy was waiting for me on the tarmac, radiant as the sun. I ran to her embrace, lifting her in my arms as tears streamed down both our faces. At long last, our life together could begin again. I would never let anything jeopardize that again. As we drove away, I turned for one last glimpse of the prison that had been my home. Prince Alexander stood watching us, face an emotionless mask. Then he turned and disappeared inside without a backward glance. The demons from my past were banished. My future was again bright with promise. As long as I had Livvy's love, I could endure anything. With her hand in mine, I was finally home.
