THE SWAYING GRASS ACCOMPANIES the two boys as they sit together every recess, slowly making it a norm for them both. The staircases behind the school became their own meeting place, where Judith occasionally helps Simon with his last-minute preparation for tests, and where Simon shows Judith how to draw.
Lunchtime seems much more interesting now for them both, something to look forward to every day is definitely making their moods so much better.
It is a day before spring break, Simon and Judith were walking home together. Judith always wished the distance between the school and his house was nearer, but ever since he started walking home with Simon, he wished the distance was longer. Simon is a great company. He's caring, he listens and he's always there. That's what makes him special from all those other people Judith had ever associated with before.
Drops of water start to rest on their skin, making them realize a slight drizzle has begun. Both of them run as fast as they could towards a nearby bus stop. The rain starts to pour as soon as they stand at the bus stop, with Simon panting breathlessly.
The two settle into their seats, whilst looking at the rain pour right in front of them. Simon's breathing is still heavy, gradually slowing down back to its normal pace. Judith notices as he turns to Simon, holding his shoulder.
"Are you okay?" Judith asks while taking a closer look at him.
"Yeah, don't worry." Simon huffs as he replies, and Judith feels a little skeptical. Judith doesn't ask more, despite the fact that he wants to make sure Simon is completely okay.
The rain pours heavily to the extent both boys can't clearly make out what they are saying. However that didn't stop them from talking. Everything goes fine until Judith brings up spring break, and Simon's smile disappears from his lips.
"Do you want to hang out during spring break?"
Simon looks sad as soon as he hears Judith ask, the smile he had a moment ago didn't seem to exist anymore.
"I can't, I'm going out of town." Simon speaks in a much quieter tone than usual, with his voice engulfed by the downpour.
"What?" Judith couldn't hear a word Simon tried to say, but he is positive that it isn't a good thing.
"I can't hang out with you. I won't be here." Simon raises his voice for the other boy, only to see Judith have his happiness cut short.
They fall silent for a moment, until Judith came with a quick idea.
"Why don't we Facetime?"
Judith remembers seeing the ginger boy's face light up, soon nodding to his idea.
"I'll call you before I sleep, if that's fine." Judith continues, and Simon's a hundred percent on board of that idea.
A platonic fondness grew between the two boys, making them forget the cold wind going against them.
And the rain finally stops.
