The air grew thick, almost oppressive, as if the cave itself was inhaling her fear and anticipation. An unnatural wind swirled around her, tugging at her clothes and hair. Ashley held her hands up to shield her face as the flame on the torch flickered.
For a brief moment, silence reigned. The world seemed to hold its breath. Then, from the heart of the sigil, a rift tore open in the fabric of reality, black as the void. It pulsed with otherworldly energy, and within seconds, the figure of a demon stepped out, like a predator emerging from its den. Cassius had arrived.
Tall and imposing, Cassius stood as a dark, commanding presence amidst the cave's ancient grandeur. His brown eyes glinted with a dangerous amusement, reflecting the dim torchlight as he surveyed his surroundings. The cave was vast and primordial, with stalactites hanging from the ceiling like the menacing fangs of a colossal, long-forgotten beast. The cavern's immense size seemed barely adequate to contain his formidable presence.
His boots crunched ominously on the rugged, uneven ground, and his clawed nails flexed with a latent power, responding to the pulsing energy of the cave. The air was thick with the weight of ages, and Cassius moved with a predatory grace, his every step a reminder of the ancient, unyielding force he embodied. The cave's silence seemed to bow to him, punctuated only by the subtle, echoing sounds of his movements and the occasional drip of water from the ceiling.
Before him stood a woman, her long brown hair with red highlights framing her face in disarray. She was trembling, but still held herself tall, though her chest heaved with the effort of calming her breath. She had a soft, rounded body—shorter than him by far—yet the determination in her golden-brown eyes caught his attention. He was intrigued by the mixture of fear and resolve that emanated from her. Her lips moved slightly, perhaps whispering a prayer or some last-minute plea for protection, but it was too late for that now.
Cassius stepped forward, his powerful frame seeming to absorb the dim light of the cave. His gaze fell on the salt circle she had so carefully drawn. With a smirk, he realized it had not been sealed properly. His suspicions were confirmed when he took another step and felt no resistance. Her feeble attempt to contain him had failed.
"You dare summon me, woman?" Cassius's voice echoed through the cave like a thunderclap. "A weakling like you—do you understand the consequences of what you’ve done?"
Ashley swallowed hard, her heart pounding in her chest. She tried to hold her ground, but fear was quickly overtaking her senses. "I summoned you for help," she stammered, her voice trembling but defiant. "Since you answered, you have to obey me!"
Cassius raised an eyebrow, looking at her as though she had sprouted ten heads. The audacity of this mortal woman assuming he would help her was almost amusing. He couldn’t fully grasp why he had been summoned, but he was catching on quickly. Humans always wanted something, and this one—he could tell—was desperate.
"Help you?" he sneered, his voice dripping with disdain. "Why would I possibly help a human?"
As he spoke, Cassius floated off the ground, effortlessly hovering over the salt and sigils. His body moved with an eerie grace as he slowly descended, landing with the weightlessness of a feather. The way he moved was both menacing and elegant, every step calculated as he began to advance toward her. Ashley instinctively took a step back, away from the circle she had created. Her breath quickened, and her mind raced in panic as she realized her mistake. The circle hadn’t been strong enough to contain him—he had broken through her protection as if it was nothing. The terror surged inside her, growing with every step he took toward her.
Scooting back along the uneven ground, she leaned on her hands and tried to push herself further away, her back pressing against the cold cave wall. The rough stone scraped at her skin, but she barely noticed. Cassius continued his slow approach, his eyes gleaming with wicked amusement.
"Stop," she said, her voice a desperate plea. "I summoned you, stop—don’t come any closer."
Cassius chuckled darkly, enjoying her fear more than he’d anticipated. He paused his advance, leaning down so that his towering frame loomed over her. "What’s the matter, witch?" he mocked, his lips curling into a smirk. "Are you scared of me?"
He reached out, his hand moving deliberately slow as he extended one long, clawed finger toward her face. The sharp edge of his nail brushed lightly against her cheek, causing her to flinch and try to turn away, but she was trapped between him and the cave wall. The touch was cold, like the grave, and sent a shiver down her spine.
Cassius chuckled softly, clearly enjoying her reaction. "You summoned me," he reminded her in a low, taunting voice. "Yet here you are, trembling in fear. How is your plan supposed to work if you're too scared to even face me? You can’t expect to form a contract with me if you're crippled by fear, little witch."
Ashley felt her breath catch in her throat as his words hit home. She had planned this ritual for weeks, researching every detail, practicing the incantations, but she had not truly been prepared for what would happen if she succeeded. Now, confronted by the living embodiment of her darkest nightmares, her resolve was crumbling.
But she couldn’t afford to show weakness. Not now.
"I need... revenge," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "That's why I summoned you. To help me make them pay."
Cassius's eyes narrowed as he regarded her, curiosity flickering beneath his contempt. "Revenge, is it?" He tilted his head, his gaze sweeping over her battered form. He could smell the pain and anger radiating off her in waves. Her fear was intoxicating, but so was her desperation. "Interesting. And what makes you think I would care about your petty human vengeance?"
Ashley swallowed, forcing herself to meet his gaze. "Because you answered. You wouldn’t have come if you didn’t need something from me. That's how this works-at least that’s what I read."
For a moment, Cassius said nothing, simply observing her with an unreadable expression. He could see the faint scars on her skin, the lingering physical evidence of whatever had driven her to summon him. There was more to her than met the eye, something darker, something buried deep within her that was intriguing.
He leaned in closer, his lips brushing dangerously close to her ear. "You're playing a dangerous game, little witch," he whispered, his breath cold against her skin. "You have no idea what you’ve gotten yourself into." Ashley tensed, her body instinctively recoiling from him, but she had nowhere to go. Cassius could feel her heart racing beneath his fingers as he trailed his claws lightly down her neck, amused by her futile attempts to hide her fear.
"Well then," he murmured, pulling back slightly to study her reaction. "Let’s see just how much nerve you have left."
He straightened, his claws retracting as he took a step back. "Tell me, witch, what exactly do you want? Revenge is such a vague concept. Who wronged you so terribly that you would summon me for help?"Ashley hesitated, her mind flashing back to that awful night in the alley. The laughter, the taunts, the pain—she could still feel it all. But saying it aloud, in front of this demon, felt like exposing herself all over again. "I... I want them to suffer," she said finally, her voice shaking with the weight of her memories. "Like they made me suffer." Cassius’s lips twisted into a wicked grin. "Now we're getting somewhere."
But as much as he relished the thought of wreaking havoc on her behalf, something held him back. He had come here for a reason, summoned by the force of her will, but there were rules to these things, and he wasn’t one to be bound by human expectations.
"And what of me, little witch?" he asked, his tone suddenly sharp. "What will you give me in return for my help?"
Ashley stood cautiously, brushing the dirt off her hands as her mind raced. She had no answer. Her heart pounded, and her throat tightened as the silence between them stretched on, thick and suffocating. Her eyes flickered across the cave floor, searching for something—anything to prompt her mind to break the tension. She could feel his gaze on her, burning with impatience, but her mind was completely frozen, a deer caught in headlights. What could she offer him? She had nothing, nothing that would be of value to a demon.
“Well? I’m waiting,” Cassius said coldly, his voice slicing through the quiet, sending a shiver down her spine.
Ashley swallowed hard, her mouth dry. Her lips parted, but no words came out. She could feel the weight of his presence looming over her, every second of silence thickening the air. Cassius, for his part, stood still, though his patience was waning, his sharp eyes narrowing on her trembling form. When she still didn’t respond, Cassius’s jaw tightened.
Without warning, he took a step forward, his hand shooting out to grab her. Ashley’s instincts flared. She ducked low, slipping just under his grasp and darting past him, her body moving faster than her mind could catch up with. Her pulse roared in her ears as adrenaline took over.
Cassius paused, his fingers curling in the air where she had just been. Slowly turning his head, watching her as she bolted through another opening in the cave. A low chuckle rumbled from his chest as he slowly turned to follow. The thought of a chase thrilled him. Shrugging his shoulders nonchalantly, he took his time, his steps deliberately savoring the game as it started to unfold.
Ashley could feel the cold air of the cave brushing against her skin as she dashed deeper into the darkness. She didn’t know what the hell was wrong with her. Why did she run? She could have said she didn’t know, asked him what he wanted—anything. But instead, she chickened out, fearing overwhelming logic.
The uneven ground underfoot was treacherous, rocks jutting out in every direction. She had no idea where she was going. All she knew was that she needed to keep moving, but the caverns twisted and turned, each opening leading to another narrow passage. The further she went, the more disoriented she became. The darkness pressed in on her, only lit by the occasional glint of dim light reflected off the cave walls. Her breath came in short, sharp bursts as she tried to silence the panic rising in her chest.
Behind her, Cassius’s voice echoed through the cave, smooth and mocking. “Come out, come out, wherever you are” he called, his tone lilting with dark amusement. The sound carried effortlessly through the stone chambers, following her no matter how far she went.
She ducked through another narrow passage, her hands scraping against the rough stone as she squeezed through. Every muscle in her body was tense, her nerves on fire. She knew she couldn’t hide from him, she knew that, she just needed a moment to think. Her instincts still screamed at her to run, to undo what she had done.
“You can’t hide from me,” his voice slithered into the next chamber, so close it felt like he was right behind her. “I can smell your fear.” Cassius scraped a claw along the stone as he walked slowly.
