Chapter 15: The Legacy of Lies I sat in stunned silence, Uncle James' words echoing in my mind. My grandmother, involved in Elizabeth's death? It couldn't be true. But Uncle James' expression confirmed the worst. "How?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. Uncle James sighed. "Your grandmother and Harrison... they were desperate to keep their secrets buried," Uncle James began. "Elizabeth had discovered their truth." I leaned in, my heart racing. "What truth?" I pressed. Uncle James hesitated. "Harrison's business dealings... they were worse than anyone imagined," Uncle James revealed. "Elizabeth threatened to expose him." My mind reeled. "And Grandma?" I asked. Uncle James' eyes dropped. "She helped Harrison cover it up," Uncle James whispered. "Elizabeth's death was a warning to anyone who dared to speak out." I felt a wave of nausea. My family's legacy, built on lies and murder. I couldn't bear the thought. Uncle James' voice brought me back. "John, I'm sorry," Uncle James said. "I should have spoken out years ago." I shook my head. "You're telling me now," I said. Uncle James nodded. "I'll do whatever it takes to make it right," Uncle James promised. But I knew it wouldn't be easy. The web of deceit was intricate. And I was now a part of it. As I stood to leave, Uncle James stopped me. "John, be careful," Uncle James warned. "There are those who'll stop at nothing to keep the truth hidden." I nodded. I knew the risks. But I was determined to expose the truth. No matter the cost. As I walked out of the study, I felt a sense of resolve. I would uncover every secret. Every lie. Every truth. No matter how painful. The hallway seemed darker. The shadows deeper. But I knew I wasn't alone. Aunt Clara waited. Her eyes locked onto mine. "John," Aunt Clara whispered. "I know," I said. Aunt Clara nodded. "Together, we'll bring the truth to light," Aunt Clara promised. But as we walked away. I couldn't shake off the feeling. We were being watched. And the web of deceit was closing in. The sound of footsteps echoed. Behind us. Getting closer. My heart quickened. Who was it? And what did they want? I spun around. Ready to face whatever came next. But the hallway was empty. The silence was oppressive. And I knew. I was running out of time.
