Chapter 17: Trapped In Her Own Schemes
Panic set in as the reality of our situation sunk in. We were trapped, locked in a hidden room deep within the abandoned warehouse.
"Who did this?" Aunt Clara demanded.
Uncle James' eyes scanned the room.
"I don't know," Uncle James admitted. "But we need to find a way out."
I examined the door, searching for any weakness.
"It's solid steel," I said. "We can't break through."
Aunt Clara's voice remained calm.
"We'll find another way," Aunt Clara said.
But the room seemed escape-proof.
Files and boxes surrounded us, remnants of Harrison's empire.
I began to dig through the documents, searching for any clue.
Aunt Clara joined me, her eyes scanning the papers.
"Look for anything that might help us," Aunt Clara instructed.
Uncle James paced the room, his mind racing.
As we searched, a name caught my eye.
"Emily Wilson," I whispered.
Aunt Clara's head snapped up.
"Who is that?" Aunt Clara asked.
I showed her the document.
"A witness," Uncle James said, his voice low. "To Harrison's crimes."
The pieces fell into place.
"Emily Wilson might hold the key," I realized.
But how could we reach her?
The room seemed to shrink, the air thickening.
Suddenly, Uncle James stopped pacing.
"The vents," Uncle James said.
Aunt Clara and I followed his gaze.
A ventilation shaft, hidden above.
"It's our only chance," Uncle James whispered.
Without hesitation, Uncle James began to climb.
Aunt Clara followed, her movements swift.
I brought up the rear, my heart pounding.
The vents were narrow, the air stale.
We crawled through the darkness, our breathing muffled.
Freedom seemed within reach.
But the sound of footsteps echoed below.
Our captors were closing in.
We had to move faster.
The vent narrowed, a tight squeeze.
Uncle James pushed forward, his body wedged.
"Go!" Uncle James shouted.
Aunt Clara squeezed through.
I followed, my heart racing.
We dropped down, landing hard.
Outside, the night air enveloped us.
Freedom.
But for how long?
The darkness seemed to swallow us whole.
And I knew:
Our journey was far from over.
