Chapter 10: Web of Deceit
The letter exposed a shocking truth.
"Your grandmother was involved in Elizabeth's death," Mrs. Thompson revealed.
Aunt Clara's face turned ashen.
"That's not true!" Aunt Clara exclaimed.
But Mrs. Thompson's expression remained resolute.
"Your family's history is built on secrets and lies," Mrs. Thompson said.
I felt like I'd been punched in the gut.
"Why didn't you tell me?" I demanded.
Aunt Clara's eyes dropped.
"I was protecting you," Aunt Clara whispered.
But I knew that was a lie.
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
"Explain," I demanded, my voice shaking.
Aunt Clara hesitated.
"Elizabeth's death was an accident," Aunt Clara began. "But your grandmother's involvement... it's complicated."
"Complicated?" I repeated. "What do you mean?"
Aunt Clara took a deep breath.
"Your grandmother was driving the car that night," Aunt Clara revealed. "Elizabeth was in the passenger seat."
My mind reeled.
"Why didn't anyone tell me?" I asked.
Aunt Clara's eyes dropped.
"Your grandmother was terrified of losing everything," Aunt Clara whispered. "She convinced us to keep the secret."
I felt a wave of anger.
"You all lied to me," I accused.
Aunt Clara nodded.
"I'm sorry, John," Aunt Clara said. "We thought we were protecting you."
But I knew that was a lie.
"You were protecting yourselves," I spat.
Aunt Clara flinched.
The room fell silent.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang.
"I'll get it," Mrs. Thompson said.
As Mrs. Thompson left the room, I turned to Aunt Clara.
"What else are you hiding?" I demanded.
Aunt Clara's eyes darted around the room.
"Nothing," Aunt Clara stammered.
But I knew she was lying.
Mrs. Thompson returned with a somber expression.
"What is it?" I asked.
"It's your mother," Mrs. Thompson said. "She's on her way home."
My heart sank.
What would Mom say when she found out I knew the truth?
