DAVID’S POV The morning began as it always did - me walking through the household, checking that the staff carried out their duties properly, ensuring the house ran in the order I preferred. I prided myself on efficiency. Everything in its place and everyone in their role. But today, my attention kept wandering back to Ashley. She used to look to me for the smallest things. What to wear, what to eat, whether she could step out into town. She’d ask me questions constantly. She was always leaning on my judgment like a child leans on a parent. I had been her compass, her protector. I was basically her guide. But lately, she had changed. I’d noticed it and I had a huge feeling that a lot had changed even though I didn’t know what.
