Chapter 9: The Second DayPete pulled the drapes to what he thought was heavy morning fog. The weatherman had said nothing about fog, but he was a hick. They might have to delay leaving early, until the sun burnt it off; mist in the mountains would be hell to drive through. Then he saw his sister. This was no fog. She was dressed and pacing the sidewalk, waving her cigarette like Bette Davis playing a mad scene. He opened the door, startling her. “What’s up?” he asked. “For God’s sakes, get back in there before your horse escapes the barn” she commanded, pointing at his boxer shorts. She punted her dead cigarette into the parking lot.
