CHAPTER THREE-2

“Please confirm now if assignment completed or not.” Instantly there was a knock on the car’s window. “Do you know you can’t park here?” His heart tore as he did not hear the traffic cop stopping his bike and walking toward him luckily, he had bandaged himself covering the blood. “I was just living,” he replied before setting off. Miles away. “Your father?” “Yes, George Tinos,” he replied confidently. “Move!” Martin felt being pushed forward before staggering ahead. “Move. Straight up to the corridor!” Martin walked a few steps and stopped to ask a question. “I said to move,” roared the man. Martin felt agitated. “Wait here and don’t do anything stupid,” advised the man. He looked everywhere trying to make sense of all this before a strong voice startled him. “Mr. Tino’s junior, what brings you here? What seemed to be the problem?” “What did you do to my father? He had been sleeping for months now?” “What did his doctor say?” “Don’t be a smart us with me. I know you are behind this,” he said. “Weapon detected!” Instantly Martin pulled the second gun and aimed. Miles away. “I personally think replacement is not the perfect match, simple as that. But I want you to meet someone with an alternate explanation,” he suggested. They walked down the corridor. “Sarah!” Pointing at a lady in overalls. “Base nodes monitoring team,” he said. “I personally believe that the base notes are the best the system has picked. I know for sure these people are or were in perfect health and represented the best in health. One million to the best of the health of all populations. Over time somehow these become part of the system literally,” he said. The women locked eyes. “Part of the system?” “Somehow even their DNA becomes part of the system that when they die or are removed, that node dies too,” he said. “Impossible?” “That’s what I have been telling Sarah,” explained Victor. “You mean that node is dead too?” “Exactly. No matter how many replacements you will put, that node will never work again,” said Sarah. Victor shook his head in disbelief. “You don’t believe me? Come I will show you something,” said Sarah. Sarah punched in some formulas into the computer system. “Look this is how the system will be like in the future,” she showed them. “Help. I can’t tell the difference,” said Marvis. “Ok, I will explain,” she replied. “Look at the small lines,” said Sarah pointing at the screen with a laser pointer. “The system is now evolving and skipping that node to establish a new network that will connect to the existing one. That means the system knows that the node is dead. The base node died with something the system needs and something only it has and no one else can replace,” she said. “Holy Ghost!” “This is the best system ever created. If the node could be replaced why establish another network to join the existing one? Instead of just replacing the node?” Asked Sarah. Victor growled in disbelief. “The replacement won’t work. This is the scientific proof. That alone explains why the alarms keep going off. You are wasting time looking for replacements?” “I don’t believe all this. We established a replacement team. Simply because we know this is the only method to go about it. I think we just need to give the system more time for the replacement to adjust,” added Victor. “Victor is in denial. He can’t face the truth. His fears are that they will say he wasted resources. Establishing this replacement team when the system doesn’t even use replacements,” she said. They all looked at each other. “I suggest you tell Richard right now before it’s too late,” advised Sarah. “No, we can’t do that,” replied Victor angrily. “Either way he is going to find out. The earlier the better,” she advised. “I know. I just need time. Okay. The replacement was my idea.” He said. “So, it’s true about node thirty-two?” Asked Regina. Victor kept quiet and just sighed heavily. “Victor deliberately terminated node thirty-two to justify the search into replacements. There was nothing wrong with node thirty-two,” said Sarah. Victor’s face creased with rage. The woman looked surprised and instantly stared at Victor. “You don’t understand Richard? You can’t wait until there is a problem. At least see we can tell in the early stages that replacements don’t work. I will, therefore, recommend that the base nodes be protected at any cost,” suggested Victor. “But still you didn’t have to terminate node thirty-two,” she insisted. “It’s sacrificing one to save 999999,” he said. “Either way it means more costs in protecting the base nodes,” suggested Sarah. “How about substituting the base node with the top or middle nodes? Can that give us more time?” “Without the base nodes, the top and middle nodes die in days. They can’t work for a longer period and take such work alone. I have tried all this,” he said. Victor instantly stopped and looked at Sarah with evil eyes. “So, the reports about bodies being found dumped, were you?” “You don’t know Richard? It’s either them or my head. This is the biggest project ever attempted, and the boss wants it to go smoothly. I can’t just hope and wait. You know?” “We can’t cover your tracks for too long?” “Hey, don’t act like you are doing me a favor. I don’t like it when you sound like that. I don’t care about your job. If you can’t do it, the boss must find other people who can clean the mess. Okay?” “Hey, don’t be a smart ass with me. If a dog owner walks the dog in the city. Then the dog shits everywhere. Who cleans up the mess? The dog or the owner? The same applies here,” he suggested. “You are lucky it’s only us. If it were others you could be in hot soup,” she said. Victor got really agitated. “Lady I will simply suggest that you are the perfect replacement for node thirty-two. And we will see what will happen after that,” he said seriously. Regina’s heart started pounding with fear. Sarah sensed fear and panic in the woman and joked about the whole thing. “He is joking right?” She asked. “I will say that you are the perfect one for node one thousand,” said Sarah to Victor trying to comfort the women. Victor acted as if he did not hear what Sarah had just said but instantly turned and looked at Sarah unamused. “What is wrong with node one thousand?” He fumed with rage looking at the big screen at node one thousand. Sarah sensed danger in Victor. She remembered the main reason why Victor got the top job. He had rage even worse than Richard. Richard had cited being man enough as a prerequisite for the job. This job sometimes required someone with steel balls. To do what was needed. Sarah was a good girl. Someone to go by the books at all times. This was something new that means stepping over the books. Victor had won in this category. “You bloody b***h. You keep sabotaging my project?” He fumed grabbing Sarah by the shoulder and squeezing very hard that Sarah wailed like a little girl in pain. “Stop it! Let her go right now or you are as good as node thirty-two. Dead!” Marvis shouted pointing the gun at Victor. “I understand you were just leaving,” said Marvis to Victor. Victor squeezed even harder. Regina too pointed the gun. “Let her go! Or I will bloody blow your head!” Victor never moved an inch nor let go of her. “This project is bigger than any man let alone you two useless pathetic people. If you want to be part of this project. Just say so otherwise. You bloody leave!” Regina flipped and somersaulted landing behind Victor and grabbed his other hand and twisted it. He growled in pain and let go of Sarah. “Okay. No need for that. I was just going,” he said. “Node thirty-two was it you?” asked Marvis looking at Sarah. “Victor is a deranged lunatic. Whenever his project has glitches someone else might have sabotaged it. He can’t seem to believe that glitches are part and parcel of the whole thing. He is the one who deliberately terminated node thirty-two,” she explained nursing her bruises. Marvis let go of Victor. “You broke my arm,” he growled. “Wait and see what else I am going to break on your body,” she said. Victor stared at Sarah with evil eyes before walking out. “Do you think you are going to be okay? Or I send someone else to keep an eye on you?” “She is a big girl. I think she can handle Victor. We might worsen the situation than it is. Let go,” suggested Regina. Marvis looked at Sarah as she nursed her shoulder. “There is something I don’t like about Victor. He seemed to have a dark side. One no one knows about,” she told them. Weeks Later Sarah after weeks in the lab decided to spend the weekend at home. Her boyfriend had left her for another woman. They had quarreled over Sarah’s long hours at work. She had some days literally sleeping in the lab. Victor had complicated the situation. Making it hard for her that she did not give a damn about her boyfriend over her job. Sarah knew Victor was the man to beat. That she spent a lot of time in the lab designing the perfect system. Now that Richard had delivered the bad news she dreaded. She saw no more need to punish herself. But to start enjoying life. A bottle of red wine. A new red mini dress, some leg shaving razors, and a walk to the city would do the magic she thought. Friday night. She opened the bathroom and prepared the bathtub pouring her favorite lavender and rose creams in the bath. A bottle and a glass of wine on the tube side. Then her best Carolinadeivid album: Dreams, Money, and Airplanes. She felt horny as every stroke stimulated all her senses. She knew what she wanted. Sinking deep in the foamy waters. Then a hard throbbing of hot water between her legs was enough to take her to another world. She hummed to the song; I love you by Carolinadeivid as she fully soaked her body into the water. A few orgasmic moans and a short sharp scream sound a minute later, was enough to see her pour wine into the glass. Before picking up the razor shaver. She paused and thought about all this. She had come too far and technically lost everything she wanted. She recalled the days Victor was selected for the top post instead of her. She recalled a few days before that when her boyfriend walked out on her. Instantly her body shivered with pain and fear as she recalled Victor grabbing her shoulder. She shivered uncontrollably when she opened the hot water tap. “Ouch!” She instantly screamed as the water was too hot. She closed her eyes and sunk even deeper into the warm tube water leaving only her head out. Soon she was in a deep sleep. “What did you do to node thirty-two? You b***h!” Screamed Victor pushing her over the bathroom floor. In shock, she touched her nose and looked at her hands. “You bastard you broke my nose!” She screamed. “You think that is worse? Wait until I have broken all your bones in your body,” bellowed Victor. “You bastard. I had nothing to do with node thirty-two,” she insisted. “You are lying, b***h! It was you. It’s only you and me. I bet it wasn’t me. That leaves only you. Who else could have done that? I know how jealous of me you were. But I did not know you were this crazy. Jeopardizing and sabotaging my project. That means you are putting me in danger. Do you know what Richard would do to me? Kill me for that matter,” he told her angrily. Sarah tried to get up but fell. She felt her legs very heavy. She couldn’t run. Soon after she felt having difficulties breathing as Victor placed his hands around her neck. “Let… go... of… me right… now. Let… me go… Victor!” She started kicking him and wriggling violently. Instantly she opened her eyes and lifted her head out of the water breathing heavily and frightened. She heard the Carolinadeivid music and looked around. She sighed in relief. “Just a dream,” she whispered to herself. She instantly picked up the phone and dialed. “I am not able to pick up your call please leave a message and number I will get back to...” She cursed and slammed the phone down. She poured another wine glass and sipped the wine. She picked up the phone again and dialed. The phone rang for a few seconds before someone answered. “Hello. Who is this?” A female voice answered the call before asking the question. Sarah froze as her heart started pounding heavily. She breathed hard choking as the woman on the other side kept saying; hello who is there? “Hello! Who is there? Who is it?” Sarah placed the receiver down and cried herself to sleep in the tube nearly drowning again. She got up and dressed and left for the city. Miles Away. Two men were in the lab. Victor and another man. “Let’s do this and I go right?” “Yes, you get paid and you go,” replied Victor. “That sounds great. Let’s get down to it. I should be rolling in the city right now!” Victor did not say anything but handed some overalls and gloves to the man. “I can be your prodigy you know?” “I said no vacancies,” shouted Victor feeling annoyed by the never-ending questions by this man. “Ok boss let’s do this and I will go,” said the man putting on his gear. Victor opened a huge fridge and quickly dragged a moveable table with a body. He flipped the sheet and checked the card. “Yes, this one,” he said. The manly slowly and now scared walked toward the body and looked at it and then at Victor. “You sure he is dead?” “Yes of course. You hold him there and we put him on the table,” said Victor. The man poked the body and laughed. “Holy ghost he is dead,” he said shocked and scared. He started laughing. “That is so freaky?” “What funny?” Asked Victor The man lifted the body and dropped it down before bursting into laughter. “How many times can you get to do this?” He lifted and dropped the body. “What the f**k are you doing you bastard?” Shouted Victor in anger slapping the man in the head. “Hey, if he is dead why are you so mad? It’s not like he is going to feel any pain you know?” He started laughing. Victor folded his fist and was about to punch the man in the face. “That’s a base node. Fool!” “What base node?” Asked the man, confused and serious. “Just lift him to the table very carefully and not to damage him,” Victor said agitatedly. “But he is dead. You told me that he is dead,” pleaded the man. Victor creased his face with rage. “You know what? I am not interested anymore. You can keep the money. I am out of here!” He instantly walked to the door. Victor shook with rage like a dog about to attack. “Where do you bloody think you are going?”
