Vicky~ "It won't be necessary." He said it without looking back, already turning to go, his Beta falling into step beside him without a word. I watched his tall figure disappear around the corner and let out a breath I hadn't realized I was holding. My phone was still in Rowan's coat pocket, three streets and a lifetime away. No way to call a car, no way to reach Mara, no way to do anything but stand there and wait. Off-duty warriors drank under braziers outside the pack-run dens lining the block, their scent tangled with smoke and cheap whiskey, groups of young wolves laughing their way past me like I was furniture.
