Chapter 2

Jack's mind was consumed with thoughts of Bob's words, replaying them incessantly. As his daughter, Emily, gazed at him with concern, it was evident to her that her father was lost in his world, detached from the present moment. She wondered if she could somehow sway his decision, hoping to convince him to let her celebrate her upcoming birthday in Zion City. "Dad? Are you okay?" Emily's voice broke through the walls of Jack's thoughts, causing him to stumble and fumble for a response. He realized he had been caught red-handed, overtaken by his contemplation of Bob's remarks. "Huh? Um, I'm fine, Em. Why do you ask? Is something wrong?" Jack's voice trembled as he attempted to gather his thoughts, now aware that his preoccupation had not gone unnoticed. Seeing her father's inner struggle, Emily couldn't help but express her uneasiness. "Nothing. I've just noticed that you and Mom haven't been talking much lately. It seems like something is bothering you. Is everything alright?" Her words dripped with sincerity and a genuine desire to understand her father's situation. Sensing the tension in the room, Emily's mother interjected in a hushed voice, attempting to diffuse the case. "Emily, your father is just lost in thought. Let's not dwell on it now; the food is getting cold. We should focus on enjoying our meal together." Her words carried a gentle reminder that they should prioritize their family time and temporarily put their worries aside looking sternly at her husband. Meanwhile, Jack found himself immersed in a perplexing dilemma. He couldn't comprehend why Victor Juarez, a man he believed to be long gone, had mysteriously resurfaced. The terrifying consequences of his past actions had led to numerous lives being wasted, and Jack had thought those dark days were finally behind him. However, he now realized that with the change in supervision within the Bureau, the threat posed by Juarez could potentially be even more formidable and devastating than ever before. "Elvira, have you made all the necessary preparations for tomorrow?" inquired Victor Juarez, as he inspected the cargo containing his stolen goods with his trusted assistant by his side. "Yes, boss! We are just waiting for your approval," she responded firmly. "Ensure that everything runs smoothly during our transaction at the Pier. I don't want any more complications overnight. It's already been frustrating for me, and I don't want to encounter further setbacks." "Consider it done, sir!" she assured him. Despite all the challenges he faced, Jack's enemies persisted in their hostile actions. Even during his retirement, he couldn't shake off the sense of duty that had become ingrained in him. As the sun rose, Jack made up his mind to speak with the new Director of the Zion Federal Bureau. However, upon their initial meeting, he couldn't quiver the ominous implication he had about the situation and his surroundings. "Agent Jack Bradley, what encouraged your visit to the Bureau? Are you searching for something?" The new Director asked, clearly taken aback. "You! It's intensely impolite, but why are you meddling with the case involving Victor Juarez? And what's even worse is that you've not only replaced Bob as the Director of this office, but you're also wreaking havoc on everything!" Jack responded angrily, his voice filled with frustration. "By the way, I am Director Carl Watson, and it's entirely not your place to question the decision made by the President to give me this job. Considering that Victor Juarez is one of the most notorious syndicate leaders in all of Zion City, it is my responsibility to apprehend him and ensure that he ends up behind bars." Watson stared into Jack's eyes unwaveringly, his morale shining through. "But that's what Bob and I were considered to do! You've forcefully taken away our position," Jack continued, overwhelmed with emotion and unable to contain his frustration. "I didn't replace former Director Robert Pearce from his position, as he freely stepped down. I've spent countless hours cleaning up the clutter he left behind throughout the Bureau. If it weren't for me taking charge and doing what neither of you wanted to do, we might have never discovered that Juarez was still alive." Jack left the Bureau feeling demoralized by his dissent with Director Watson. However, he also considered paying a visit to Bob at the address he had been suggested to come to. Simultaneously, Jack began brainstorming the probable outcome of the entrapment operation that the Bureau was planning to do. "Jack? I wasn't expecting you to come. Please come in," Bob said as Jack entered his house while remaining cautious of their surroundings. "So, you mentioned that the entrapment of Juarez is set for tonight? - if he gets taken hold of, all of our efforts will be in vain. Everything you've achieved at the Bureau," Jack remarked, observing Bob as he grabbed both beers from the refrigerator. "Jack, don't you think they wouldn't have replaced me if they didn't have suspicions? Or perhaps he is working with Juarez to baffle us - with Juarez showing up, Watson might have found a reason to accuse me," Bob reacted. "Bob, there is absolutely no conclusive evidence against you. We both understand that Juarez has a mole inside the Bureau, and it's highly convincing that the mole is none other than Director Carl Watson." Jack confidently asserted, taking a sip of his beer. After meticulously devising their plans for the operation entailing entrapping Juarez, they promptly made their way to the Pier. Their objective was to apprehend the infamous leader of Zion City's most notorious syndicate, because they were not meant to interfere with the operation. "Are you entirely sure about this? We may not make it out alive, Jack." Bob hesitantly murmured, as they prepared their firearms, bracing themselves to confront their adversaries. "Trust me, we can find a way out of this. My daughter's birthday is tomorrow, Bob, and I simply cannot miss it. So let's do our best efforts here!" Jack reassured his friend, though an undertone of trepidation crept into his voice. They patiently waited for the perfect moment when the Bureau's elite agents would arrive, positioning themselves in a concealed corner to avoid detection by both the authorities and Juarez's men. They planned to remain hidden until the group comprising Victor Juarez and his accomplices would appear. "Stay on high alert, everyone! This time, Juarez won't escape us," Director Watson urged his men, fully aware of the imminent appearance of their main target. With Director Watson's instruction, his men were advised about the exact spot where their target would show up. They bided their time, anticipating the arrival of another convoy that soon drew near. Their instincts told them it must be related to Juarez, possibly his buyer. "Victor? It's good to see you back in the business! But please, be cautious and take some rest. The authorities are still hot on your heels," Juarez's buyer expressed concern for his business partner's safety. "Mr. Tanaka, you know me well. I can't entrust this operation to anyone else. It's one of the most crucial shipments, and I know you'll appreciate it," Juarez confidently voiced, reassured by his successful return to the business. "I am well aware of the exceptional quality of your smuggled pieces of jewelry in the current market. And it thrills me to be one of the fortunate few to have made it onto your exclusive client list," Mr. Tanaka clamored, expressing his excitement with a burst of laughter. "Without a doubt! I know about your genuine interest and generosity, Mr. Tanaka, and I eagerly expect striking a favorable deal with you tonight," Juarez responded, displaying his typical business-like demeanor. As the transaction between Juarez and his buyer unfolded, Jack seized the opportunity to discreetly approach the compartment housing the stolen jewels and other illicit goods. "Bob, we must go our separate ways! You head over there, and I'll cover this area," Jack whispered, ensuring their covert presence remained undetected. "Stay vigilant, Jack!" Bob cautioned, watching Jack retreat from his line of sight. Jack swiftly incapacitated Juarez's men one by one, methodically making his way closer to the concealed stash of stolen goods. Yet, before he could even reach the cargo, the sound of a gunshot reverberated through the air, causing everyone to freeze in their tracks. "Elvira? What is that?" Juarez ordered his right-hand woman to search for it. "I have to leave, Victor. The trade cannot roll as you have failed to ensure our security," Mr. Tanaka expressed fearfully. "We are here, Mr. Tanaka, and you cannot just leave. Unfortunately, I showed you kindness." Victor Juarez fatally shot Mr. Tanaka, and his staff, and followed suit with their now-deceased rivals. "Kill anyone you meet, leaving none of them alive!" Juarez commanded his men before departing the scene. Amidst the ongoing gunfire, the elite forces of the Zion Federal Bureau swiftly moved in to apprehend their target, though tragically several of their colleagues lost their lives.
