In the midst of constant encounters with various people, it is impossible to predict the outcome of any situation. The challenges and deceitfulness that one faces are overwhelming, for they are but a solitary figure. If one believes that peace and stability will prevail, they will be caught off guard by unforeseen circumstances.
As a law enforcement officer, it is an unavoidable reality that one's life is constantly at risk, and a courageous undercover agent becomes accustomed to this fact. However, after years of dedicated service and unwavering loyalty, the notion of retiring officially begins to cross his mind.
"Agent Jack Bradley! I'll certainly miss calling out your name in the Crime Department," Bob clamored, chuckling.
"Bob, I'll miss that too, along with all the instants we've shared here, both agreeable and not so agreeable. Perhaps it's time for me to lead a regular life like any ordinary person. We're not getting any younger, you know?"
You're right in what you've said. That's why I hope you put an end to your reckless behavior outside of the Bureau. I don't want to have to repeatedly arrest you due to your impulsive decisions. Not again, Jack."
"I will keep that in mind, Director. Alright sir, I'll take my rest now. I don't want to break down and cry in your office. Goodbye, Bob."
"Goodbye, Jack."
When Jack finally left the place he had called home for almost twenty-five years, he immediately returned to his family. His wife had eagerly awaited his arrival, and his daughter who he had been longing to witness her existence and development.
"Dad!" His daughter exclaimed, brimming with excitement.
"Emily!"
"Welcome back, Jack," his wife greeted him.
"I missed you! I apologize for coming home late. I promise I won't leave again."
After returning, Jack slowly forgot about his life in Zion City and his job at the Zion Federal Bureau. He wakes up optimistic without any troubles, enjoying time with his wife and daughter. He barely realized that his daughter would be turning eighteen in a few days.
"So, Emily, what do you want for your birthday? Do you want us to organize a party? Just let me know and I'll be up for it, just tell your dad."
"Dad, there's no need. I just want something simple."
"Emily, you can't impose your desires on your dad. No, what you want is unlikely to happen."
"Why? Beth, is there something I need to know?" Jack questions, seemingly perplexed.
"Well, Dad, all my classmates are going to a concert in Zion City on my birthday. Even if we don't celebrate here, as long as you allow me to join my friends, please?"
With her gentle looks and pleading voice, a father couldn't do anything but fulfill the desire of his only child.
Nevertheless, due to his wife's viewpoints, Jack contemplated setting a condition. "You can go, but on the condition that your Mom and I have a say in it."
"What? You can't impose conditions on my request, Dad. Mom?" Emily expressed her disappointment.
"Certainly, I am still your father, and until you reach the age of eighteen, you will continue to put up with my rules, along with your mother's." He assert with an air of authority. "Alright. So what is the condition?"
Though disappointed, Emily didn't oppose to her parents' terms. Unfortunately, instead of bringing her exhilaration, it only made it more challenging for her to create a memorable event that she would only have the chance to experience once.
"Do you even have a car?" Her father inquired. "No, but there is a bus; the only problem is, we might miss the last one at night, Dad." Emily conveyed her distress.
"So you won't be able to return home the next day? I can't agree to that." Jack had a change of heart out of curiosity.
"Dad, can I please go? And remember, we'll head straight home after the concert. Plus, registration for the next school year hasn't even started yet. I would want to come with my friends in Zion City." Emily's revelation took Jack by surprise. He wasn't sure how he felt about his daughter's decision to leave their hometown, especially since he had just returned from a lengthy service call.
"But there's a university right here. Why would you choose to go all the way to Zion City?" Jack contested.
"Relax! Our daughter has grown up in this town her whole life," his wife reassured him.
"What's wrong with staying here? This is where our life is, and it's safer here!" Jack's emotions started to show as he spoke to his wife and daughter. However, Emily remained firm in her wish. "All my friends are going to study there. I don't want to be stuck here forever, right? And if we're always scared because of your job, when will we have the bravery to face life head-on?"
"You can't sleep, hmm?" Beth questioned as she awoke to his restlessness.
"It feels like just yesterday that I was away from Emily for ten years, and now she's going to be out of my sight again."
"Jack, a lot has transpired in your daughter's life, and now that you're back, it's best to allow her the freedom to discover her passions and determine her own path, with your guidance, of course."
"I understand, but you can't deprive me of my concern, especially since we're aware of the dangers in Zion City."
"Hmm? That's in the past. Emily is unlikely to be in danger anymore, as you'll be there to protect her. Plus, you're already retired.
As the sun arose, Jack awoke to find Bob, his former ZFB boss, in their living room, knowing that there must be a pressing matter for him to visit.
"Jack, you have a visitor. Bob is here."
"Hmm? I've only been enjoying the comfort of my bed for a month, and you're here to visit me already?"
Beth nervously watched Jack as she made coffee for both of them, but Jack's eyes darting around the garden to ensure they were not overheard by his wife and daughter. He knew they were in a secluded spot, far away from prying ears, deliberately chosen to avoid any potential trouble that he might find himself in.
Trying not to offend his friend, Bob's visit, Jack questioned his presence and his seemingly troubled expression in the early morning. He wanted to understand why Bob appeared to be in distress.
Bob hesitated for a moment before replying to Jack's inquiry. With a stammer, he confessed, "I have actually left my position as the Director of the Bureau." Bob's response took Jack by surprise, and he couldn't help but express his curiosity further.
"You left? So, are you retiring too then? Well, congratulations, Bob!" Jack congratulated his friend, initially unaware of the gravity of the situation.
As Bob let out a deep sigh, he locked eyes with Jack, conveying the seriousness of their conversation and why it was taking place so early in the morning. There was definitely more at stake than Jack initially anticipated.
"I was forced to step down. They reopened the case that you thought had been closed long ago- the one concerning Victor Juarez," Bob confessed, his voice tinged with a mixture of frustration and disappointment.
Jack's anger flared up upon hearing this unexpected turn of events. He couldn't understand why they would meddle with a case that had already been resolved, especially when the main suspect, Juarez, had been dead for years. The idea of interfering with something that had long been concluded infuriated him.
"I regret to inform you that Juarez is still alive. These files contain the evidence that your most formidable enemy is still amongst us."
"What is the strategy created by the newly appointed Director of the Bureau?"
"There is an Intelligence report suggesting that an operation is being planned at the Pier to arrest Juarez by luring him into a pitfall."
Jack found it hard to believe that Bob would uncover all this to him, considering that Bob had voluntarily quit from the service after knowing so much that harmed him in the past. After Bob left, Jack tried to explain to his wife, Elisabeth, what Bob intended to attain with the ongoing investigation that the ZFB had instigated for reasons unknown to them.
"I have to fix this, Elisabeth; I cannot find peace as long as Victor Juarez is still out there!"
"Jack, Emily, and I almost lost you because of him! Perhaps it's time for you to sever ties with him. Let your former ZFB colleagues handle the fate of Juarez."
"Bob has a reason why he came to me; why he was fired from his position as Director at the Bureau." Jack insisted saying. "And you also have a reason to stay here. Isn't that enough? Aren't we enough for you?" Beth begging him to stop whatever he wanted to do with his enemy being still at large.
Jack is uneasy about what is happening after he learns of the revival of the Victor Juarez case. In the quiet life he was in now, he didn't fully think that the chaotic and dangerous life he left behind was still coming for him.
