Chapter 4: Secrets Beneath the Surface

717 Words
Days passed, and Alisha’s thoughts were consumed by Zain. Despite their growing friendship, she kept her feelings carefully tucked away, afraid of ruining the delicate balance they had built. But when Zain texted her late one night, asking her to meet him for coffee after a particularly grueling day at the hospital, she couldn’t say no. --- The café was quiet, the perfect backdrop for a conversation that felt as though it had been waiting to unfold for days. Alisha sat across from Zain, the warm light from the overhead lamp casting soft shadows on his face. His usual calm demeanor seemed a little more withdrawn tonight, and Alisha could feel the weight of unspoken words. “I’m glad you could make it,” Zain said, his voice low. “I needed to talk.” Alisha’s heart skipped. “What’s going on?” Zain took a deep breath, his fingers running through his hair. “I had a tough case today—emergency surgery. A young woman… she didn’t make it. We did everything we could, but sometimes… it’s out of our hands.” Alisha reached across the table, her hand resting gently over his. “I’m sorry, Zain. That must be so hard.” Zain looked up, his dark eyes heavy with emotion. “It is. But there’s more. I’ve been carrying this guilt around for a while now. I think I’m just… tired of pretending like it doesn’t affect me.” Alisha’s heart ached. She wanted to pull him into a hug, to make the pain go away. But she knew better than to cross that line. Instead, she simply squeezed his hand, offering silent support. “You don’t have to hide it from me,” she said softly. “You’re only human.” Zain nodded, his gaze flickering away. “I don’t know why I’m telling you this. We barely know each other outside of work.” Alisha smiled gently. “We’ve had a lot of late-night talks about design and life. Sometimes, that’s enough to understand someone.” For a moment, Zain was silent. Then, he looked back at her, something unspoken in his eyes. “I think that’s true. You’ve been a good friend to me, Alisha. And I—” Before he could finish, a loud voice interrupted them. “Hey, Zain! Long time no see!” A man in a white coat approached the table, clapping Zain on the back. Alisha recoiled slightly, feeling a pang of disappointment. Zain greeted the man with a smile, introducing him to Alisha. “This is Raj, a colleague of mine. Raj, this is Alisha, the one who’s been helping me redesign my place.” Raj nodded at her, but there was something about his grin that made Alisha uneasy. She couldn’t place it, but the moment Zain turned his attention to Raj, the warmth between him and Alisha seemed to dissipate. --- As the evening wore on, the conversation shifted, and Alisha’s earlier moment with Zain felt distant. She didn’t know why she felt this way—Zain had always been kind to her—but tonight, something had shifted. She couldn’t shake the feeling that Zain had pulled away, even if only for a moment. When they said their goodbyes, Zain gave her a brief, distracted hug. “Take care, Alisha,” he said, his voice quiet. Alisha nodded, a strange heaviness settling in her chest. As she drove home that night, the sound of her tires on the wet road was the only thing keeping her grounded. --- The next few days were strained. Zain seemed distant, too caught up in his work to meet or text. Alisha told herself not to overthink it—after all, he had a demanding job. But she couldn’t help wondering if something had changed between them. --- Meanwhile, Zain, caught up in his professional responsibilities, couldn’t shake the conversation he’d had with Alisha. She had been the only person who’d ever seen through his tough exterior, who had offered him real comfort. He realized, with a sudden clarity, that he didn’t want to lose that connection. But how could he possibly navigate this growing attraction while juggling the demands of his career? He needed to talk to her. He just didn’t know how. ---
