The forest pulsed with danger.
Dozens of glowing eyes surrounded the clearing, their howls still echoing in Elara’s bones. She clung to Kael’s arm, her breath ragged, silver fire still simmering under her skin.
Kael’s jaw was clenched, his claws dripping blood. He leaned close, his voice a low growl. “On my signal… run.”
Elara’s stomach twisted. “Run where? We’re surrounded!”
Kael’s lips curled into the faintest smirk despite the blood streaking his face. “Trust me.”
Before she could protest, Kael hurled himself forward with a feral roar, slamming into the scarred leader with bone-crunching force. The rival wolves staggered, momentarily thrown off balance.
“Now!” Kael barked.
Elara’s legs moved on instinct. She darted through a gap in the pack, branches clawing at her arms as she sprinted into the darkness. Kael was right behind her, his presence like a shadow at her back.
Snarls erupted behind them as the wolves gave chase. The pounding of paws shook the ground, closing in fast.
Elara’s heart hammered. Every instinct screamed that she couldn’t outrun them. But then—her veins lit up again, a faint silver shimmer glowing under her skin. Her speed surged. Her body felt lighter, faster, almost inhuman.
Kael noticed. “Good. Don’t fight it. Use it!”
“Use what?!” she gasped.
“The gift you keep calling a curse!”
They tore through the forest, weaving between trees, the rival pack howling at their heels. For a moment, Elara thought they might make it—until the ground dropped suddenly into a ravine, deep and jagged.
She skidded to a stop at the edge, dirt crumbling beneath her boots. “We’re trapped!”
Kael’s golden eyes gleamed in the moonlight. Without hesitation, he grabbed her hand. “Hold on.”
“Wait—Kael, no—!”
He leapt.
The world spun as they soared over the ravine, the blood moon blazing above. For a terrifying second, Elara thought they’d fall—but Kael landed hard on the other side, knees buckling, his grip unrelenting.
The rival wolves screeched to a halt at the edge, snarling in frustration. One tried to leap but crashed into the rocks below. The rest howled furiously, pacing, unable to cross.
Elara collapsed against Kael, her chest heaving. “Are you insane?! We could’ve died!”
Kael smirked faintly, brushing blood from his mouth. “Or we could live. I chose the latter.”
Despite the terror still pounding in her veins, something in his tone made her throat tighten.
Before she could speak, the air shifted.
The forest grew unnaturally still, the howls behind them fading into silence. A strange glow shimmered between the trees ahead—pale, bluish, almost ghostly.
Elara stiffened. “Kael… do you see that?”
His expression darkened. “Yes. And it means we’re not alone.”
The glow grew stronger, forming the outline of a figure cloaked in white, staff in hand, eyes like pools of silver light. The very air bent around them, heavy with ancient power.
Elara’s skin prickled. Her voice broke into a whisper. “Who… who is that?”
Kael’s tone dropped, reverent and grim. “The Elder Seer.”
The cloaked figure stepped into the clearing, the staff striking the ground with a hollow thud. The bluish glow surrounding them pulsed in rhythm with Elara’s heartbeat, making her skin crawl.
The Seer’s voice was neither male nor female, but something older, woven from whispers and echoes.
“Moonborn.”
Elara flinched. Her mouth went dry. “Stop calling me that… I’m not—”
“You are,” the Seer cut her off, their tone like stone grinding against stone. “Denying it will not change the blood that burns inside you.”
Kael’s body was tense, protective, standing slightly in front of Elara. “Why are you here, Seer?”
The silver eyes turned toward him, glowing with quiet power. “Because destiny moves. The rival pack has already tasted her power. If she falters, the world will burn.”
Elara shook her head violently, her voice trembling. “I never asked for this! I never wanted to be part of… of any of this!”
The Seer raised a hand, and suddenly the world shifted.
The trees blurred. The earth trembled. Elara’s vision filled with fire and ash—wolves tearing through villages, rivers running red, the blood moon cracked in the sky. And at the center of it all…
Herself.
Her eyes glowing silver, her hands dripping with blood. Screams echoed around her as she stood alone, both savior and destroyer.
Elara choked on a sob. “No… no, that’s not me. I wouldn’t—”
The vision snapped back to the clearing. Her knees buckled, and Kael caught her before she fell.
His voice was sharp, angry. “What the hell are you showing her?”
The Seer’s expression remained calm, ageless. “The truth. A Moonborn’s fate is a knife—sharp enough to heal, sharp enough to kill. Which edge she chooses… will decide whether the packs are united or the world is drowned in blood.”
Elara’s hands shook violently. “I can’t… I can’t carry that.”
The Seer’s glowing eyes softened, just slightly. “You already do.”
Silence fell, broken only by Elara’s ragged breathing. Kael’s grip on her tightened, steady, grounding. He glared at the Seer. “If you’re so wise, then tell us—how does she survive this curse?”
The Seer tilted their head, the faintest trace of something like a smile ghosting their lips. “Survival is not the question. Transformation is.”
Their gaze locked on Elara, burning into her soul. “When the blood moon rises thrice, you will either stand as Alpha of all… or fall as ruin of all. The choice is yours.”
The words echoed, heavy and final.
And then—the glow vanished. The Seer’s figure dissolved into mist, leaving only silence and the shiver of the wind.
Elara’s chest heaved. Her voice broke in a whisper. “Alpha… or ruin.”
Kael looked at her, his golden eyes fierce but uncertain. He brushed blood from his jaw and muttered darkly, “They’ve just put a target on your back. Every pack will want you now.”
Elara turned her gaze to the blood moon above, its red light painting her skin. Her heart pounded, fear twisting with something else she couldn’t name—something dangerously close to destiny.
The forest howled in the distance. The hunt wasn’t over.
It was only beginning.
