CHAPTER 13:The Safe House

881 Words
The hidden passage twisted deep beneath the mountain. The air was damp and cold, and the only sound was the hurried footsteps of the group as they pushed forward. Samuel led the way with a flashlight. Grace and Elena carried Sophia on the stretcher while Adrian walked behind them, ignoring the blood soaking through the bandage wrapped around his shoulder. Every few minutes, he glanced back. Listening. Waiting. "They're not following us," Elena whispered. "They don't know about this tunnel," Samuel replied. Adrian remained silent. He had learned long ago that silence often meant something worse than pursuit. --- After nearly an hour, the tunnel began sloping upward. A faint breeze drifted toward them. Fresh air. "We're close," Samuel said. He climbed a narrow staircase and pushed against a heavy iron hatch. With a loud groan, it swung open. Morning sunlight flooded into the tunnel. For a moment, everyone shielded their eyes. They had emerged inside an abandoned stone chapel hidden on a hill overlooking Ashridge. Broken stained-glass windows allowed beams of golden light to spill across the dusty floor. Wooden pews lay overturned. The altar was cracked with age. Nature had reclaimed much of the building. Yet beneath its ruined appearance, the chapel felt strangely peaceful. Grace smiled faintly. "Thomas chose this place himself." Elena looked around. "My father knew about this chapel?" Samuel nodded. "It became our last safe house after Sophia disappeared." --- Adrian stepped outside first, scanning the surrounding woods through a pair of binoculars hidden beneath one of the pews. "No movement." "For now." Samuel locked the hatch beneath an old carpet. "If anyone comes looking, they'll think this place has been abandoned for years." Elena knelt beside Sophia. Her mother's breathing had become weaker. Grace carefully examined the wound again. The cloth was soaked red. "We need to remove the bullet fragments." Samuel opened an old wooden cabinet. Inside were medical supplies, bottled water, canned food, blankets, and a portable generator. Elena stared. "My father prepared all this?" "He prepared several safe houses." Samuel handed Grace a medical kit. "He always believed this day would come." --- As Grace treated Sophia, Elena walked to one of the chapel windows. From the hill, she could see the entire town. Ashridge looked peaceful. Children rode bicycles through quiet streets. Shop owners opened their stores. People walked to work. No one knew that beneath the calm surface, a war had begun. A quiet voice interrupted her thoughts. "Beautiful, isn't it?" She turned. Adrian stood beside her. His face was pale from blood loss, but he still managed a faint smile. "You should be resting." "So should you." For the first time since they met, neither of them spoke. The silence between them wasn't uncomfortable. It was familiar. Finally, Elena looked at him. "Why did you come back?" He frowned. "What do you mean?" "You escaped." "You could have saved yourself." Instead... "You came back for me." Adrian looked out across the town. "I made someone a promise." "Your father?" He shook his head. "My mother." He reached into his pocket and unfolded a faded piece of paper. "I've carried this since I was ten." Elena accepted it carefully. The handwriting was elegant. She read aloud. > Adrian, if the day ever comes when Elena needs you, protect her with your life. The truth will need both of you. Her hands trembled. "This was written by..." "My mother." Elena looked up. "Our parents planned this." "They hoped we'd finish what they couldn't." --- Suddenly... Samuel hurried into the chapel. His expression was tense. "We have a problem." Everyone looked at him. He placed a folded newspaper on the table. Across the front page was a headline that made Elena's blood run cold. LOCAL JOURNALIST SUSPECTED IN FATHER'S MURDER AND WAREHOUSE EXPLOSION Beneath the headline was Elena's photograph. The article claimed she had murdered Thomas Carter before setting fire to her own home. Another photograph showed Adrian. BLACKWOOD HEIR DECLARED MISSING AFTER ACT OF TREASON Samuel clenched his fists. "Victor is controlling the narrative." Grace looked horrified. "He's turning the entire town against them." Elena felt sick. "If the police believe this..." "They'll be hunting us too," Adrian finished. Samuel nodded. "Not just the police." He turned another page. A reward notice covered nearly half the newspaper. $5,000,000 REWARD Information leading to the capture of Elena Carter and Adrian Blackwood. Elena stared at the amount. "They've put a bounty on us." Adrian's expression darkened. "No." He pointed to the bottom of the page. "It isn't Victor." Everyone leaned closer. At the bottom of the notice was the name of the organization funding the reward. Not Blackwood Industries. Not the police. A name none of them had expected. THE ECHO FOUNDATION. Sophia's eyes flew open the instant she heard the words. With the last of her strength, she whispered, "They're still alive..." Before anyone could ask what she meant, the chapel's old radio crackled to life on its own. A distorted voice echoed through the room. > "If you can hear this... do not trust the Foundation." Then the signal dissolved into static. The room fell silent. Somewhere beyond Ashridge, an unseen enemy had just revealed itself. And Victor Blackwood might not be the most dangerous person hunting them after all.
