"No..."
Elena's scream echoed through the underground chamber.
She held Sophia tightly, refusing to let go.
Blood soaked through her hands.
"Mom... please..."
"Please don't leave me again."
Sophia's breathing was shallow.
Pain clouded her emerald eyes, but when she looked at Elena, there was peace.
With trembling fingers, she brushed a strand of hair from her daughter's face.
"My little moon..."
The childhood nickname shattered the last of Elena's doubt.
It really was her mother.
Tears streamed uncontrollably down Elena's cheeks.
"I searched for you."
"Every birthday..."
"Every Christmas..."
"I never stopped believing you were alive."
Sophia smiled weakly.
"I know."
"I watched..."
"What?"
Elena looked at her in confusion.
"I watched you grow."
The room fell silent.
"You... watched me?"
Sophia nodded faintly.
"I couldn't come near you."
"They were always watching."
"I had to stay hidden."
Her voice broke into a cough.
More blood stained her lips.
Grace knelt beside her, pressing a cloth against the wound.
"We need to stop the bleeding."
Samuel examined the injury.
His expression grew grim.
"The bullet passed through."
"But she's losing too much blood."
Adrian staggered toward them despite his injured shoulder.
"We need a hospital."
Sophia immediately shook her head.
"No hospitals."
"They control them."
Adrian understood instantly.
"If Victor learns she's alive..."
"He'll finish what he started."
Sophia managed a weak nod.
---
Elena looked at the small silver key still clutched in her mother's hand.
"Vault 731."
"What is it?"
Sophia's eyes shifted to the key.
"The truth..."
"Everything."
"The names."
"The recordings."
"The experiments."
Her breathing became uneven.
"It wasn't just Ashridge."
Samuel frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Sophia closed her eyes for a moment before answering.
"Project Echo..."
"...was only the beginning."
Everyone exchanged uneasy glances.
"There were other facilities."
"Other towns."
"Hundreds of children."
Grace covered her mouth.
"My God..."
Sophia looked directly at Elena.
"Vault 731 contains every piece of evidence I collected."
"The originals."
"If the world sees them..."
"...they can never bury the truth again."
---
Suddenly...
One of Samuel's radios crackled to life.
A distorted voice echoed through the room.
"They've surrounded the eastern ridge."
"Negative on the targets."
"Continue the search."
Adrian looked toward Samuel.
"They're closing in."
Samuel nodded.
"The sniper wasn't alone."
Grace looked around anxiously.
"This bunker isn't safe anymore."
Sophia whispered, "There's another exit."
Samuel looked surprised.
"I thought it collapsed years ago."
"It didn't."
Sophia pointed weakly toward the back wall.
"Behind..."
"...the bookshelf."
Adrian hurried over.
He pulled several dusty books aside.
Hidden behind them was an old iron lever.
He pulled it.
With a deep rumble, part of the stone wall slowly slid open.
A narrow passage stretched into darkness.
Samuel stared in amazement.
"I never knew this was here."
Sophia smiled faintly.
"Thomas built it..."
"...after I disappeared."
Elena's heart ached.
Her father had spent nearly two decades preparing for this day.
---
As Samuel packed the files and Grace gathered medical supplies, Adrian crouched beside Elena.
"We have to move."
She shook her head.
"I'm not leaving her."
"We're taking her with us."
Sophia reached for Adrian's hand.
"Thank you..."
"For keeping your promise."
Adrian lowered his head.
"I almost failed."
"You didn't."
She squeezed his hand weakly.
"You became..."
"...the man your mother hoped you would be."
Adrian blinked rapidly, fighting back emotion.
---
A sudden explosion shook the bunker.
Dust rained from the ceiling.
The lights flickered.
"They've found the entrance!" Samuel shouted.
Another explosion followed.
This one closer.
The steel door groaned under the impact.
"They're using explosives," Adrian said.
"It won't hold much longer."
Samuel slung a backpack over his shoulder.
"I'm ready."
Grace carefully helped Sophia onto a stretcher.
Elena took her mother's hand.
"I'm not letting go."
Sophia smiled.
"You never did."
The group entered the hidden passage just as another deafening blast echoed through the bunker.
Behind them, cracks spread across the steel door.
Then came Victor Blackwood's voice through a loudspeaker.
"Elena Carter!"
"You can keep running."
"But every secret has a price."
"I already took your father."
"I won't hesitate to take your mother again."
Elena stopped walking.
Her grief turned into something colder.
Something harder.
She looked back toward the sealed bunker door.
For the first time since this nightmare began...
She wasn't afraid.
She was furious.
Quietly, she slipped Vault Key 731 into her pocket.
Then she made herself a promise.
No more running.
No more hiding.
She would expose every secret.
No matter the cost.
Behind them, the bunker door finally gave way with a thunderous crash.
Victor's men poured inside.
But the passage had already sealed behind Elena and her companions.
The hunt was far from over.
It had only entered its next stage.
