CHAPTER 9:The choice

"No!" Elena grabbed Adrian's arm before he could reach the warehouse door. "You can't." Adrian gently removed her hand. "If I don't go, they'll storm the building." "And if you do?" He smiled sadly. "Then maybe they'll let the rest of you escape." "They won't!" Samuel snapped. "Victor doesn't negotiate." Grace nodded. "He's buying us time, nothing more." Outside, the loudspeaker echoed again. "You have thirty seconds." A powerful searchlight swept across the warehouse, casting long shadows over the dusty floor. Adrian turned to Samuel. "Is the emergency tunnel still open?" Samuel hesitated. "It hasn't been used in years." "That wasn't my question." "...Yes." "Good." Adrian looked at Grace. "Take Elena through it." "I'm not leaving you!" Elena protested. He stepped closer until they were only inches apart. "You have to." "You barely know me." His blue eyes met hers. "That's not true." Elena frowned. "What do you mean?" Adrian reached into his wallet and removed a worn photograph. It was the same picture of two children beneath the old oak tree. On the back, in faded handwriting, were the words: Promise you'll never leave me. A tear rolled down Elena's cheek. "I wrote that..." "You did." "When we were children." He folded the photograph and placed it in her hand. "I've kept it with me for eighteen years." Her heart tightened. "You remembered me?" "I never forgot." Before Elena could respond, the warehouse walls shook violently. Boom! An explosion erupted outside. Dust rained from the ceiling. "They've breached the outer gate!" Samuel shouted. Another explosion followed. Boom! The metal entrance buckled inward. "They're coming in!" Grace cried. Samuel rushed to a large control panel hidden behind a shelf. He pressed several switches. A section of the concrete floor slowly slid open, revealing a narrow staircase descending into darkness. "The tunnel!" he shouted. "Go!" Elena looked between the open passage and Adrian. "I'm not leaving." "You don't have a choice." "I won't let you die!" Adrian smiled faintly. "You sound exactly like your mother." The words stunned her. "You knew her well?" "She saved my life." Before he could explain, gunfire erupted outside. Bullets tore through the warehouse windows. Glass exploded across the room. Samuel ducked behind the workbench. "They're inside!" Black-clad soldiers poured through the shattered entrance. "Search every room!" "Find Elena Carter!" Adrian fired two quick shots. Bang! Bang! The first attacker collapsed behind a stack of crates. "Move!" Adrian shouted. Grace grabbed Elena's wrist. "We have to go!" Elena resisted. "No!" Another burst of gunfire forced them behind cover. Concrete splintered as bullets struck the wall. Adrian crouched beside Elena. "Listen to me." She looked into his eyes. "If they capture you..." He paused. "...everything your parents sacrificed will be meaningless." Her breathing became uneven. "I can't lose another person." "You won't." "You don't know that." "I do." He reached into his jacket and removed a small silver pendant engraved with a crescent moon. "My mother gave this to me." He placed it in Elena's palm. "She told me to give it to the girl I'd protect with my life." Elena stared at the pendant. "It's yours now." A tear slipped down her cheek. "Please come back." He gently brushed the tear from her face. "I intend to." Then he stood. Without another word, Adrian stepped out from behind the crates and into the open. "Over here!" he shouted. Every gun turned toward him. He sprinted across the warehouse, drawing the attackers away from the hidden tunnel. "Stop him!" Gunfire echoed through the building. Adrian dove behind a steel pillar as bullets sparked around him. Samuel seized the moment. "Now!" Grace pulled Elena toward the staircase. Reluctantly, Elena followed. Just before the concrete door slid shut above them, she looked back one last time. Through the narrowing gap, she saw Adrian standing alone against a dozen armed men. Then— A single gunshot rang out. Adrian staggered backward. A dark stain spread across his shoulder. "Adrian!" Elena screamed. The tunnel door slammed shut. Darkness swallowed them. The last thing Elena heard was the sound of relentless gunfire echoing overhead. She clutched the silver pendant tightly against her chest. For the first time since this nightmare began, she realized one terrifying truth. She wasn't just running toward the truth. She was running out of time to save the man she was beginning to love.
