CHAPTER 10:Beneath the Heart

The tunnel shook violently. Dust drifted from the ceiling as another explosion echoed somewhere above. Elena stumbled down the stone steps, tears blurring her vision. "No..." She struggled against Grace's grip. "We have to go back!" Grace tightened her hold. "If we go back now, Adrian's sacrifice will be for nothing." "He was shot!" "I know." "We can't leave him!" Samuel, breathing heavily, sealed the steel door behind them with a heavy locking wheel. A loud metallic click echoed through the tunnel. "It'll hold them for a while," he said. "For how long?" Elena asked. Samuel looked away. "Not long enough." --- The tunnel stretched endlessly beneath the forest. Unlike the passage beneath Elena's house, this one was wider and reinforced with concrete walls. Emergency lights glowed faintly every few meters. Someone had built this place with military precision. Elena wiped away her tears. "Who built all these tunnels?" Samuel answered without slowing his pace. "They weren't built to hide." "They were built to escape." "Escape from who?" "The people running Project Echo." Elena frowned. "You keep mentioning Project Echo." "But no one has actually told me what it is." Grace stopped walking. Her face grew pale. "I suppose..." "...it's finally time." Samuel nodded. "We can't hide it anymore." --- They entered a large underground room. It resembled an abandoned command center. Maps covered every wall. Old radios lined dusty shelves. A generator hummed softly in one corner. Grace sat down heavily. She looked twenty years older than she had only hours before. Samuel unlocked a large steel cabinet. Inside were dozens of thick binders. Each carried a child's photograph. Each had a number instead of a name. Elena felt sick. "What are these?" "Victims." Her voice caught. "Victims of what?" Samuel placed one binder on the table. Inside was a photograph of a smiling little girl. Across the page, someone had stamped one word in red ink. DECEASED Another file. Another child. Another red stamp. DECEASED Again. And again. And again. Elena closed the folder, unable to continue. "How many children?" Samuel's answer was almost inaudible. "Officially?" He looked at the rows of binders. "One hundred and twelve." Silence filled the room. Grace finally spoke. "Unofficially..." "...we'll never know." --- Elena sank into a chair. "My mother discovered this?" Grace nodded. "She was investigating missing children across three states." "Every trail led back to Ashridge." "And to the Blackwoods." Samuel corrected her. "Not all the Blackwoods." Elena looked up. "Adrian's father is guilty." "But Adrian's mother wasn't." "She secretly helped your parents." Elena remembered the silver pendant Adrian had given her. She took it from her pocket. Moonlight from a narrow ventilation shaft reflected off its surface. Grace smiled sadly. "I haven't seen that pendant in eighteen years." "It belonged to Adrian's mother?" "Yes." "Before she died..." "...she made Thomas promise that if anything happened to her son..." "...he would protect him." Elena stared at the pendant. "My father was protecting Adrian too?" Samuel nodded. "The two families never stopped protecting each other." "They only pretended to be enemies." Everything Elena had believed... Every story... Every rumor... Had been carefully manufactured. --- Suddenly... The room fell silent. Samuel looked toward one wall. "What is it?" Elena asked. He slowly raised a finger. "Listen." At first... She heard nothing. Then... Faint footsteps. Above them. More than one person. Grace's face drained of color. "They're tracking us." Samuel hurried to one of the security monitors connected to hidden surface cameras. The grainy image flickered to life. Black-clad soldiers moved through the forest. Flashlights swept across the ground. Dogs pulled against their leashes. "They found the tunnel entrance," Samuel whispered. Another screen activated. Victor Blackwood himself stepped out of a black SUV. Even through the monitor, his presence was intimidating. He accepted a radio from one of his men. His cold voice echoed through hidden speakers connected to the surface microphones. "Search every inch." "I don't care how long it takes." "I want Elena Carter alive." "And Adrian..." Victor paused. His expression hardened. "...bring me my son." Elena stared at the screen. "He doesn't know Adrian escaped?" Samuel shook his head. "No." Hope flickered inside Elena's chest. "Then maybe..." Before she could finish— A loud knocking echoed through the tunnel. Three heavy knocks. Everyone froze. Samuel slowly reached for a pistol hidden beneath the table. "No one knows this entrance," he whispered. The knocking came again. Three slow knocks. Then a familiar voice echoed through the thick steel door. "Samuel..." "It... it's me." Elena's eyes widened. She knew that voice. "So did Grace." Grace shot to her feet, tears filling her eyes. "Adrian?" Silence followed. Then the voice spoke again, weaker this time. "Please..." "Open the door..." "I'm not alone." Samuel hesitated. His finger remained on the trigger. "How do we know it's really him?" Before anyone could answer... A second voice spoke from outside the door. A woman's voice. Soft. Familiar. A voice Elena had heard only in fragmented memories. "Elena..." "I've finally found you." Elena's heart stopped. It couldn't be. The voice whispered again. "My darling..." "It's Mom."
