As the days went by, I was checking things off my list of preparations for the move. I was able to talk to all of my students and their parents about my departure (needless to say they were not happy with me leaving), I finalized things with my apartment, signed my lease and set a move in date, made a list of what I needed to get from my place with Mark and what was left to purchase. I also made sure everything was taken care of with my new employer, so as soon as I got settled in Thomasville I was ready to start my new job. Right now, I was taking care of the one detail I was not looking forward to as much as I sat and waited for Dr. Thomas to come in for my exam. "Jessie, how are you doing? What can I help you with today?" Dr. Thomas said as he walked in.
"Hello, I am doing pretty good. I am here for an exam today. I wanted to get this all done before I moved, and I also needed to sign any releases you may need from me as soon as I establish a doctor in Georgia." I stated. I know I will have to explain the type of exam I need but I was delaying it as long as possible because this is embarrassing for me. Never did I think I was going to have to ask for this since marrying Mark.
"I'm confused Jessie? I am looking at my records here and you are not due for an exam yet. Is there a reason you are asking for this today?" I took a deep breath and with a tear making its way down my cheek I finally shared. "I found out recently my husband has been cheating on me with a number of women and I need to make sure nothing was brought back to me. I know I am not due for my exam yet but I don't want to wait until then to find out."
"Absolutely not! You don't want to wait to take care of something like that. Let me have the nurse bring you a gown to change into and I will get the necessary items prepared. I am assuming you will wait to transfer the records until after we receive the results?"
"Yes Dr. Thomas, as I stated, I was just going to take care of the necessary paperwork on your side and wait until I get established with a doctor there before I request my records. I will still be here for about a week. Will I be able to find out my results before I leave?"
He nods, saying, "Yes, I should have your results in a couple days, three days max."
After my exam, I signed all of the necessary paperwork to release my records when it was time. I also updated my records with only my contact information and changed Amy to be my emergency contact if it was needed. I didn't want to chance Mark being notified for any reason. I left the office and was just getting ready to head back to my hotel room when I was stopped by my phone ringing. Mark's name was showing on the screen, sighing I answered this time, "What do you want Mark?"
"Jessie, I know I don't deserve it, but please can we meet for dinner? I want to show you I am serious about fixing things. I was hoping you would meet me at our favorite restaurant, where we had our first date, I thought this would be the best place to show you something I found."
While I didn't want to go, however, I also needed to work out a time to come by and pick up the rest of my things because I was getting closer to my moving date. I wanted to line up a day he would not be at the apartment so I could thoroughly go through everything. "Alright Mark, but not for dinner because this will not be a date. I will meet you at the coffee shop in an hour, I have to stop somewhere else first."
After hanging up, I ran back to the hotel to pick up some papers I needed to drop off to my attorney that he had sent me to sign. An hour later, I was sitting with a cup of coffee waiting for Mark to make his entrance. "Jessie, thank you for meeting me baby! I can't tell you what this means to me." I stopped him right there with a raise of my hand.
"First, do not call me that, you lost that right with what you have been doing and continue to do. Secondly, the only reason I agreed to this is I need to line up a day when you will not be home so I can get the rest of my things distraction free." I was trying to be as calm as I could for this meeting, but in reality I was just barely stomaching him being right across from me.
Mark pulled out some papers and set them in front of me and started in like he didn't even hear me. "No baby you don't understand, I want to fix this and I remember you telling me that you wanted to start your own practice and for us to start looking at houses. To show you how serious I am, I started looking at some options for us and just see what I found. There are a few offices here in town. I think it might be good for you to start out and I found a couple of houses that have 3-4 bedrooms for when we decide to start our family." He looked like he was so proud of himself, like he found the solution to get my forgiveness for betraying me. I sat there stunned and looked down at the various pages he printed out silently.
All of a sudden, I started laughing and I looked back up at Mark. He seemed to think me laughing was good because all of a sudden he smiled at me. Is he an i***t? Did he really think this would fix things? "Mark, this is not the solution to our problems, and frankly, I find it insulting that you think you can buy my forgiveness." Mark started to interrupt me, but again, I stopped him. "Yes, I wanted to start my own practice and for us to buy a house for when we start a family but that was before I found out you were sleeping around. Those goals for us to work together died with our marriage. Tell me something Mark, you say you're serious, but what do your girlfriends have to say about you trying to repair your marriage?"
Mark looked at me confused, "What are you talking about, baby? I don't have any girlfriends, I am serious about making things work between us. There is no one else but you." I started laughing again and pushed the papers back towards him and said, "You know what's funny. You keep saying this to me, but the other day I was sitting here talking to Amy and telling her my plans and I happened to have a great view of the apartment right across the road there." I pointed out the window towards where I saw him making out with some random woman. Marks' face lost all its coloring as he looked out towards the building, realizing what I was telling him. "Mark, there is no way to repair what you destroyed, and honestly I can barely look at you anymore. Did you really think that coming here with this would fix everything? You need to accept that we are done and there is no repairing it. I will be coming by the apartment after work on Friday to get the rest of my things and I don't want you there. I will be bringing Amy and Dean to help me with my move so don't anything."
"I will not give you a divorce Jessie, you will calm down and realize we are meant to be. I will fix this and we will be happy! You'll see!" Now he was sounding desperate and I was getting uncomfortable sitting here. "We are done. I will not come back to you. Don't be there when I come Friday." I got up and walked out of the coffee shop and drove out of there as quickly as I could. This meeting didn't go the way I wanted it to, but I hope I got my point across that I was done.
