CHAPTER NINE

1999 Words
Two days passed by with Omezuo and Nkeoma avoiding each other, Omezuo repeatedly came home late and woke up very early to leave for studies. He had also become very close friends with one of his female classmates Sally. She helped him forget the pain he was going through in his marriage – his wife’s lack of understanding and persistent nagging. This day in class she was wearing a short mini skirt showing off perfect long legs and Omezuo couldn’t take his eyes off those legs. He felt a familiar feeling in his groins and had to restrain his thoughts. Why was he fantasizing over another woman when he has a beautiful wife at home? Sally was very intelligent and he loved talking with her. She was so confident as a woman and knew what she wanted in life without expecting much from anyone. This was something peculiar with women in this part of the world, they were self-driven. For another moment Omezuo paused, it seemed to him he was comparing Nkeoma with someone else and this didn’t sit well with him. “ Hi Sally, what are you doing this evening”, he found himself asking. “Let’s go have a drink at the café” “Oh sure Omez that would be really nice” Once again after lectures he found himself relaxing with her at the Café and they had a few drinks. He desperately needed to talk to someone but didn’t know how to start, his world has become such a lonely one. Omezuo found himself reaching out today to touch Sally slightly on the legs and she didn’t stop him. He got bold and relaxed his hands on those legs, squeezing and rubbing it at intervals and she kept smiling as they chatted about nothing. “Let me walk you home, hope you won’t mind” Omezuo asked. “No problem with that at all” He walked her home to her door and she asked him inside. Immediately they got inside her living room, Omezuo pulled her closer tohimself and soon they were lost in a sizzling kiss. He wanted her with everything in him. They found themselves to her bedroom and struggling to undress each other. Omezuo threw her to the bed and their kissing and fondling intensified, but suddenly he stopped. What in the world was he doing, what has gotten into him? She couldn’t understand what was going on and pulled him closer, but Omezuo withdrew and to Sally’s shock he started crying. “What is wrong my darling, its ok Omez. Please talk to me, you know you can talk to me”. She held him close to her bosom and consoled him while Omezuo cried like a baby. Sally was deeply shaken; she had never seen a broken man as the one before him” “Its ok baby, she kept whispering to him. Just cry it out and you will be fine”. She cuddled him all through the night, until he got control of himself. Sally refused to let him go anywhere that night and Omezuo loved staying with her, it felt good holding her, giving him hope that it will all work out in the end. That night he slept in Sally’s house and she cuddled and took care of him while he held on to her throughout the night. “It’s my wife”. Omezuo had woken up very early the next Morning and found Sally looking at him with so much concern. “What has she done”. Sally asked. “She has changed so much. She doesn’t support me in any way. Finds it difficult to do things for herself.” “You know when I married her, I had hopes that she will commence her studies once we got into the US. But I didn’t plan it well. Apart from the cost, I am not sure I want to settle down here when I finish my studies. I want to go back home and contribute to the development of my country”. “She has a right to feel betrayed Omez. You have to understand that”. “First you must admit to the fact that you should have asked the right questions before bringing her here”. “when you get home today, talk to her and try to understand what the real issues are ok”. “And how come you never introduced her to anyone you hunk”. Sally asked smiling. At this Omezuo laughed and she was happy he was getting back to his old self, Omezuo was among two Africans in their class and very handsome. She had been drawn to his easy ways to life, the way he laughs at everything was contagious. She was shocked at the flood of emotions he had let out last night. Sally was relieved that nothing serious happened between them, this man obviously loved his wife and was missing the way they used to be. She resolved to always be there for him as a friend. Omezuo got home very early in theMorning, God knows he never planned sleeping over at Sally’s, but she had opened herself up to him and showered him with love. She had held him tenderly throughout the night and consoled him. She had understood that he was moved to her not because of s*x but because of loneliness and a warm body to cling to and assure him that it will be alright, they had formed a deep bond after spending the night together- a bond based on true friendship. She had encouraged him to go home and talk things over with his wife. Seeing her prancing up and down when he opened the doors with his keys sent a wave of emotions washing all through him, he felt guilty, he felt helpless and he felt once again the love he had for his wife Nkeoma. Even in her distress her beauty still shone like the Morning star. She stood at almost Five feet and six with the clearest black skin, sometimes it shone. Her eyes were round, slanting upwards by the sides and she had a small birthmark just at the edge of the skin where her eyes started from. She was of a good frame, weighing about 68kg. Her gait while she walked always got Omezuo lost, it was as if she swung her hips purposely just to entice him. Omezuo realized he was lost in his thoughts and had some explaining to do when he saw her gaze thundering down on him. Waoo, he knew she had fire in him but never imagined it could burn so hot. She was raving at him even without uttering a word. “Where have you been Omezuo”. It was obvious she was trying her best to control her anger. “Why did you abandon me, leaving me all alone in this house without any word of what you were doing.” “I have been here going crazy and imagining all sorts of things could have happened to you and here you are” She got closer and could swear she smelt a woman’s perfume on him. “At least if you knew you were not going to come back, you should have called to inform me”. “I am home now Nkeoma, won’t you welcome your husband home”. Omezuo thought to himself. All he just wanted to do was to carry her up, swing him around like he used to, she always loved that and make passionate love to her. He wanted to profess his love to her once again, but he had to answer all these questions. “Forgive me Nkeoma, but I had a serious assignment in school which I had to submit. Was kept up throughout the night researching”. He found himself lying and was amazed how he did it so easily. Mentally he promised himself that this will be the last time he will lie to her. “At least you should have called. Do you have an idea how worried I have been”? “I am so sorry my love; it will never happen again” “Promise me you will never abandon me like this again.” Nkeoma was suddenly afraid of losing her man, what if he has found love in another woman’s arms. She couldn’t stand losing him to another woman. “Promise me you will not do this again” she sobbed. Omezuo gathered her in his arms and held her close, begging for her forgiveness, promising her heaven on earth and Nkeoma relaxed. Omezuo lifted her up to the bed they shared together and they clung to each other, needing consoling, loving and never wanting to let go, he thanked his God that it was a weekend and he didn’t need to hurry off to school. He had a whole two days to love his precious wife and show her how much he cared. Nkeoma wondered if any man could ever love her like Omezuo, she remembered Emeruwa once again and thought about how it would have been with him. She had left him heartbroken and till date wasn’t sure how and why she had agreed to marry Omezuo, it was as if he held a spell on her such that his closeness made her forget every other thing but him. “I am expecting a child” Nkeoma whispered into his ears. Omezuo was beside himself with Joy. “Nkem tell me that again. You mean am going to be a father”. He hugged her tightly and then quickly let go as if he was already choking the child with his big hug. “Don’t be scared Omezuo, you act like you are hurting the child” she burst out laughing. “From now on, I don’t want to see you in the kitchen, do you hear me. I will make your food and I will bathe you every night for the next 3 months, do you hear me” “Yes sir”. Nkeoma was tickled at his excitement. “Oh, my love, please forgive me”. “Is that why you wanted me to take you to the hospital” “I suspected but I wasn’t sure”. At this Omezuo was filled with deep remorse. “I am so sorry Nkem. But next time, if you want to tell me anything just say it without being too emotional and dragging about the bush ok” “Ok. I will make sure of that” “I want you to understand that I love you and always will. My course work is getting very tedious, am sorry if you feel neglected sometimes.” “I understand perfectly Omezuo. I also understand that you want to eat me up every night even when you’re not talking to me” They both burst out laughing at that, it was true and he wondered if he will ever get enough of this woman. “I love you so much Nkeoma”. Omezuo waited for her to say it, but she only kept looking at him with adoration in her eyes. At such moments, he never doubted her love for him, if only she could pronounce those words to him. For now, Omezuo was relieved, he has got his wife back. Everything was going to be fine, his God has never failed him – but the nagging thought remained “But you have failed her, you have failed your wife”
