THE NIGHT STALKER. CHAPTER 10.5

1830 Words
I couldn't comprehend why I took this job in the first place. I was a complete amateur. The man that had called me to do it said I had to have my eyes on the boy 24/7 for two days straight. How was it possible to monitor someone for a whole 24 hours? But I needed the money. I really did. I had to pay my rent. It was almost due and the landlord was already on my ass. So I took the job, even with knowing virtually nothing about it. Of course I lied and presented a fake resumé to them. I mean everybody lies. And I thought it was just watching someone for a while. I mean what could possibly go wrong? Well I was wrong. The boy in question I was supposed to watch, today being the first day in which I was assigned to watch him, spent everyday inside his house. He barely even came out. What was I supposed to do? I didn't know. I crept around, hiding myself behind the buildings located along the street where the boy lived, catching glimpses of him only from his kitchen window, whenever he went inside the kitchen. This was going to be a very stressful job,I thought. Towards evening,I was already very tired and extremely hungry. I was about to quit. Infact I already made up my mind to give up. I had to. I couldn't continue doing this,it was simply torture. I would have to find another means of getting money. This one was definitely not working out for me. But I'd first return the money, which was half of complete money, the man who contacted me had already paid me. Just as I was about to turn around and go home, the boy in question came out of his house. He looked like he was about to go to work. I was informed prior to taking the job, that he worked as a bartender in a club. It was a mildly confusing situation,I thought. Why would someone be so interested in an ordinary bartender,so much that they even had to hire someone, which is me in this context,to watch him? I watched the boy enter his car and tried to start it. The car didn't come to life. He tried it again and it didn't start. I couldn't hear him very well but I knew he was starting to get frustrated. He eventually came out of the car and started walking. My right guess was that he was walking to the bus station to take a bus to work. I wondered why he didn't just call an uber. Well, that was a little strange and at the same time, extremely annoying. I followed him,he was walking very fast, probably to meet up with the bus on time. I still thought an uber would have saved the both of us this unnecessary stress because I was specifically instructed to monitor his daily activities and report everything exactly as it happened. Him taking the bus just put extra stress on me because I had to follow him to the bus station. He entered the bus. And I entered immediately after him. Grateful that he didn't notice me enter after him, probably because he looked like he had a lot on his mind,I saw him find a seat near to the window and sat down, plugging in his earphones in the process. I sat a few seats behind him inorder to have my eyes completely fixed on him to know where and when he would alight. While still observing him,I was thinking. He was just like every normal person. I still wondered what was so interesting about him to the extent that someone wanted to have him watched. He didn't look anything out of the ordinary, except for the fact that he was actually good-looking,falling on the slender side but with a decent amount of muscles on him. He had black hair,so black that he looked like he was dying it black artificially because there was no way his hair could be that black naturally,it was even looking very shiny. He has a slim face,a long nice and small lips. I hadn't seen the colour of his eyes but from what I would see from afar,it looked brown-ish. The boy looked good but was that enough reason for someone to have him followed? Maybe he was living a secret life. Was that why I was asked to follow him? Or maybe someone somewhere was obsessed with him. I knew good-looking people had others who would do anything just to get close to them. But the amount of money I was paid, was huge that there was no way it was merely because someone fancied him. Well,it was just a day. Maybe if I followed him more,I would realised the reason why I was hired. The boy got off at a juncture I was well familiar with. There was a club just right around the corner. I have had plenty episodes and occasions where I got extremely drunk there and I had to be taken home by my girlfriend. I knew she hated doing that but Patricia didn't have a choice. She loved me to a fault and was willing to do anything for me. So most times,I took advantage of that situation. But in my own twisted way,I knew I loved her or at least I thought I did. The boy entered into the club and I waited for some moments before getting into the club myself. He was talking animatedly with his co-worker when I came in,so I went to the farthest end of the club and sat down, while having my eyes on him. I watched him for a while. Nothing much was happening. I was starting to feel a little tired, worn out and drowsy so I closed my eyes and before I knew it,I fell asleep. I woke up,almost sweaty. I looked around the club and realised that almost everybody had gone, just a few people remaining. I glanced at the bar to check whether the boy was still around. Thankfully,he was still there. He was cleaning up with his co-worker. So I used that opportunity to leave the club. I hung around the premises of the building, just around a dark corner behind the building, waiting for the boy to finally be done with work. I knew he would take the bus so I had to follow him immediately the bus appeared. I looked around the street. Fewer people were walking around at this time of the morning, mostly people who had night jobs and people who wanted to get home after work. So I stood patiently behind the corner and waited for him to come out. Luckily for me, I didn't have to wait for long before he came out. He came out with his co-worker who I figured was also his friend because the way they talked to each other was more than the usual formalities that co-workers had. They bade each other goodnight but as the friend started to walk away, the boy called the friend back and they started to have a conversation. I couldn't hear what they were saying so I waited patiently for them to finish. The bus came,he finally left his friend and boarded the bus. I entered immediately with him. He still didn't notice me or my weird movements. The bus came to a stop at the bus station and he came down. I alighted with him and we started walking back to his apartment. The streets was completely empty, not a single soul was walking with us. My footsteps were very heavy and I knew it was a matter of time before he realised someone was actually following him. But I couldn't stop now. I had to run a full report inorder to get my complete money. I wasn't about to back out now. Suddenly he broke out in a run. s**t! I cursed internally. This boy was about to make life very difficult for me. He could have just walked and I'd just follow him and give my report but he chose to run. I didn't know what else to do so I started running after him. I couldn't let him out of my sight. Even though I knew he was probably afraid thinking I was about to harm him,I didn't care. All I wanted was my money. The boy was fast,so fast that I couldn't catch up with him even though I was running at my full speed. To even make matters worse,I was panting heavily. But I continued running after him. As his house came into view, just in front of his neighbour's house, stood a man there who I thought was his neighbour, supposedly. F*ck! I cursed internally. The boy ran into the man,a tall well-built man,and almost fell but the man caught him. I immediately ran behind a dark corner inorder to hide myself. Hoping that the man didn't see me running after the boy,I stood there and watched. They started talking and broke out to something that looked like an argument and I stood there watching them, unsure of what to do. Eventually the boy followed the man into the house. I was grateful for that. I contemplated leaving then but what if the man came out and caught me there? I couldn't run,he might chase after me. So I decided to wait it out. When I felt like I had waited enough and the boy wasn't going to come out of the neighbour's house,I took the opportunity to call the man that contacted me. He picked up on the second dial. "I have the whole details down for you, ready to report to you. I need my complete payment as soon as I do that" I said in an icy voice, trying to sound more fierce inorder to show this man that I was serious with my job and that I wouldn't tolerate incomplete payment. The man's laughter came out of nowhere, sounding very humorless over the phone,"You incompetent fool. You were instructed to watch the boy and not follow him like some crazy lunatic. You will get your complete payment once I get off this call but if you are serious about securing this job,you have to learn how to actually do the job, notwithstanding presenting a fake resumé! i***t!." The man ended the call immediately. At first I was angry at the insults and the condescending tone at which he talked to me. Why would he even talk to me like that? But then I started to consider, how did he know I was following the boy like a crazy lunatic? Was he watching me? Was someone else watching me? Who are these people? What was this boy? Something serious was going on here and I felt was more than what I actually know. But I wasn't my business to think about. I had only one job,to watch this boy and that is all I would do.
