Breaking What She Loves

1181 Words
Stephen’s last words refused to leave Lily’s mind. He had given her one week seven short days to make her decision. If she agreed, the following week would be spent preparing for the journey into the past. If she refused, the fate she saw in her nightmare would swallow her whole. Seven days. Seven days to tear apart everything she loved. The weight of it nearly crushed her. Lily tried to live as though nothing had changed smiling at her parents over breakfast, holding Charles’s hand when they walked together, pretending to care about the details of her wedding gown. But inside, her heart was a battlefield. Every time she looked at Charles, she thought of Stephen’s warning: “Charles will never accept you again.” Every time her parents laughed, she remembered: “They will die unless you sacrifice your wealth.” There was no escaping it. If she wanted to change her future, she had to betray someone. And the path Stephen had laid out for her was clear. She could not cling to Charles. Three days passed before Lily found the courage to act. The longer she waited, the more impossible it felt. Yet time was slipping through her fingers. On the fourth day, as her parents sat in the parlor discussing wedding plans, Lily forced herself to speak. Her voice trembled, but she masked it with an air of cold resolve. “Father, Mother… I need to tell you something.” Her parents looked up, startled. “What is it, Lily?” her mother asked with concern. Lily’s hands twisted nervously in her lap. “I… I can’t marry Charles. I don’t love him anymore.” The silence that followed was crushing. Her father blinked, his jaw tightening. Her mother’s teacup slipped from her fingers, shattering against the floor. “What nonsense is this?” her father demanded. “You and Charles are perfect for each other! Everyone knows it. And you’ve adored him since you were a girl!” Lily swallowed hard, forcing herself to stay steady. “Things have changed. My feelings… they’re gone. I don’t want this marriage.” Her mother’s voice shook. “Lily, don’t be foolish. You’ve planned this wedding for months. You love Charles! Why would you say such a thing?” Tears burned her eyes, but she blinked them away. “Because it’s the truth.” It wasn’t. Every word was a lie, and each one cut deeper than a knife. But Stephen’s voice echoed in her mind, relentless: “Only by severing that tie can you avoid the poverty and misery that await you.” Her father stood, his face red with anger. “I will not allow you to throw away your happiness like this. Do you understand what you’re saying, Lily? You’re humiliating your family, destroying everything we’ve built for you!” Her mother tried to soften his fury, reaching for Lily’s hand. “Darling, if something is troubling you, we can talk it through. But don’t say you don’t love Charles. We’ve seen the way you look at him. Your heart belongs to him.” Lily pulled her hand away, her voice breaking. “Not anymore. Please… respect my choice.” Her parents exchanged helpless, furious glances. They could not understand. How could they? Lily could not tell them the truth that she was sacrificing Charles not because she didn’t love him, but because she loved him too much to let him become part of the nightmare she had seen. The news spread quickly. That evening, Charles arrived at the mansion, his face pale, his jaw clenched. He demanded to see her, and her parents, though furious with her, allowed him in. When Lily walked into the sitting room, Charles was already pacing, his hands balled into fists. He turned sharply at the sound of her footsteps. “Tell me it’s a lie,” he said, his voice trembling. “Tell me your parents misunderstood.” Lily froze. Every part of her wanted to run into his arms, to bury her face in his chest and say it was all a mistake. But she steeled herself, forcing her expression into cold detachment. “It’s not a lie,” she whispered. Charles’s chest rose and fell rapidly. “Why, Lily? What changed? We were happy. We were planning our future. How can you throw it away like this?” Her throat tightened. Say it. Hurt him. Break him now before fate breaks you both later. “I don’t love you anymore,” she said, the words bitter on her tongue. Charles stared at her, his eyes wide with disbelief. Then he laughed bitterly, shaking his head. “No. No, I don’t believe you. This isn’t you. Someone’s poisoning your mind. Who is it, Lily? Who told you to say this?” She turned her face away, unable to meet his eyes. “No one. It’s how I feel.” He stepped closer, desperation pouring from him. “Look at me, Lily! Look at me and say it again.” Her eyes filled with tears, but she forced herself to look at him, her voice steady though her heart screamed. “I don’t love you.” The silence that followed was unbearable. Charles’s face crumbled, his eyes filling with hurt and fury all at once. “You’re lying,” he whispered. “You’re lying to me. But if this is truly how you feel… then you’re more cruel than I ever imagined.” He turned sharply and stormed out of the mansion, slamming the door behind him. The sound echoed through the hall like thunder, leaving Lily gasping for air. That night, she curled into her bed and sobbed until her body shook. She clutched the engagement ring, now cold and meaningless, against her chest. Every word she had spoken to Charles had been a dagger aimed not at him, but at herself. Her parents avoided her, their disappointment heavy in the air. She could feel their stares, could hear their hushed arguments late into the night. And through it all, Stephen’s promise lingered like a poison in her veins: “If you marry me, we will be connected. Only then can you go back.” By the end of the week, Lily was hollow. Her laughter was gone, her joy drained. But Stephen returned, as he said he would. He appeared again in the park, under the same cold lamplight, as though he had been waiting in the shadows the entire time. “You did well,” he said, his eyes glinting. “The bond is broken.” Lily’s voice cracked. “I hurt him. I destroyed him.” “And in doing so, you opened the door,” Stephen replied smoothly. “Now, we prepare. In seven days, you will be mine. And together, we will step into the past.” Lily’s heart thudded painfully in her chest. She had made her choice. Or rather, fate had made it for her. And for the first time, she wondered if she had traded one nightmare for another.
