CHAPTER 6: AFTER Book 1
The hospital smelled like disinfectant and rain.
Three months.
Three months since Colorado.
Three months since 7 uploaded `FILE OMEGA` to the world and watched the compound burn behind him.
He was sitting by the window. IV still in his arm. Bandages under his shirt where the bullet had grazed him. Outside, Seattle was gray. The kind of gray that made you think the sky was tired too.
The news played on the TV with no sound.
His face was on it. Blurred. "Unidentified source."
Below it: `4 COMMITTEE MEMBERS ARRESTED. GLOBAL MARKETS STABILIZE. FBI STILL SEARCHING FOR GHOST SOLDIER.`
7 didn’t look at it. He was watching the door.
It opened.
Maya.
She had coffee in one hand and a stack of newspapers in the other. Her hair was shorter now. She cut it after Colorado. "Easier to run," she said at the time. She still looked tired. But alive. That was new.
"You’re up early," she said, setting the coffee down.
"Couldn’t sleep," 7 replied. His voice was rough. He hadn’t used it much.
Maya sat in the chair beside him. No words for a while. They didn’t need them.
Finally she broke it. "They’re calling you a hero."
7 scoffed. "I killed people."
"You stopped people from killing billions."
"Same thing."
Maya looked at him. Really looked. "No. It’s not."
She pulled out a newspaper and laid it on his lap. The headline: `THE GHOST IN THE MACHINE: HOW ONE MAN STOPPED PROTOCOL NIGHTFALL`.
There was no photo. Just a silhouette. A man in the dark.
"I didn’t give them your name," Maya said quietly. "I told them Asset 7. That’s all they get."
7 nodded. "Good."
"Are you mad?"
"About what?"
"That the world knows. That I wrote it."
7 was quiet. Then: "No. The world needed to know. They needed to know it wasn’t an accident. That it was 12 people trying to play god."
Maya reached over and took his hand. Her fingers were cold. His were colder. But he didn’t pull away.
"I thought you’d be gone when I woke up," she whispered.
"I thought about it."
"Why didn’t you?"
7 looked out the window. "Because you said you’d be here when I woke up."
That made Maya smile. Small. Real. "Smooth, for a guy with no training in romance."
"I had 25 years of training. Just not that kind."
They laughed. Quiet. Like they were afraid someone would hear and take it away.
The door opened again.
Handler.
He looked older. The bullet in Colorado took more out of him than it looked. Gray at the temples. A limp. But his eyes were sharp. The same eyes that recruited a 17-year-old boy 25 years ago.
He closed the door behind him and leaned against it. "You look like shit."
"Thanks," 7 said.
"You both do," Handler added, looking at Maya. "Good. Means you’re still alive."
Maya stood up. "I’ll give you two a minute."
"No," 7 said. Fast. Too fast. "Stay."
Handler raised an eyebrow. Then nodded. "Fine. She stays."
Silence.
Handler pulled out a folder. Thin. Manila. He tossed it on the bed. "Eight."
7 didn’t touch it. "Eight what?"
"Eight Committee members still free. The Director had 12. We got 4. The other 8 ran. Different countries. Different names. Different plans."
Maya picked up the folder. Opened it. Photos. Bank records. Safehouses.
"They’re regrouping," she said. "Trying to restart Protocol Nightfall."
"Part 2," Handler confirmed. "Smaller. Dirtier. But still enough to crash 3 continents if they pull it off."
7 stared at the folder. "And you want us to do what?"
"I want you to finish what we started." Handler’s voice was low. "I’m too old for this. Too broken. But you’re not. And neither is she."
Maya looked at 7. "You don’t have to say yes."
7 didn’t answer right away. He looked at his hands. The scars. The calluses. Hands trained to kill. Hands that held Maya’s last night when she had a nightmare.
25 years underground.
72 hours to save the world.
And now... what? Freedom?
He thought about the Director’s words. _Sacrifice thousands to save billions._
He thought about Viper’s words. _There is no ‘we’._
He thought about Maya’s words. _If no one tells the story, then they win._
7 picked up the folder.
"I’m not a ghost anymore," he said. "So I don’t run from fights."
Handler almost smiled. "Good. Because Viper’s alive."
That got Maya’s attention. "What?"
"Colorado. He jumped before the explosion. Broken ribs. Concussion. But alive. And pissed. He’s hunting you. Personally."
7 closed his eyes. When he opened them, they were clear. Cold. The Ghost was still in there. But it wasn’t all of him anymore.
"Then we hunt him first," 7 said.
Handler nodded. "I have locations. Resources. Contacts I didn’t burn. But we do this my way. Slow. Quiet. One at a time."
"And after?" Maya asked. "After the 8?"
Handler looked at her. Then at 7. "After... you get to choose. A name. A life. Whatever you want."
7 didn’t say anything. But he squeezed Maya’s hand.
Later that night, the hospital was quiet. Maya was asleep in the chair beside him. Her head on his shoulder. The folder was on the nightstand. Eight names. Eight countries. Eight fights.
7 couldn’t sleep. He got up, careful not to wake her. Walked to the window.
His reflection stared back. 42 years old. Short hair. Scar on his jaw. Eyes that had seen too much.
Asset 7.
No name. No past.
But not anymore.
He pressed his palm to the glass. Outside, the rain had stopped. The clouds were breaking. A little bit of light.
Behind him, Maya stirred. "You okay?"
"Yeah," 7 said. "Just... thinking."
"About what?"
"About names."
Maya sat up. "What kind of name?"
"I don’t know. Something normal. Something human."
She smiled. "We’ll find one. Together."
The TV was still on. Muted. A news ticker scrolled across the bottom:
`FBI: MANHUNT FOR GHOST SOLDIER CONTINUES. REWARD: $10 MILLION.`
7 looked at it. Then turned it off.
"We should leave tonight," he said. "Before they find us."
Maya nodded. "Where to?"
"First name on the list." 7 picked up the folder. "Geneva."
Handler’s voice came from the doorway. He’d been there the whole time. "Flight leaves at 0400. No trace. New passports. New faces."
"And after Geneva?" Maya asked.
"After Geneva," Handler said, "there’s Dubai. Then Singapore. Then Buenos Aires."
"Eight stops," 7 said.
"Eight endings," Handler corrected.
Maya stood and went to 7. She didn’t ask if he was scared. She didn’t have to. She just stood next to him. Shoulder to shoulder.
"You ready?" she asked.
7 looked at the city. At the light breaking through the clouds. At the woman beside him. At the folder in his hand.
25 years in the dark.
72 hours to save the world.
And now... a lifetime to figure out who he was.
"Yeah," 7 said. "I’m ready."
Handler tossed him a jacket. "Then let’s go, Ghost."
7 caught it. Put it on.
"Don’t call me that anymore," he said.
Handler paused. "What should I call you?"
7 thought about it. For the first time in 25 years, he got to choose.
"Not yet," he said. "I’ll tell you when we’re done."
And they walked out of the hospital. Into the rain. Into the dark.
Into the next fight.
