ADRIAN’S POV:
After they all departed to their separate rooms, Adrian found himself alone in the quiet of his study. He sank into his chair, the weight of the evening settling heavily on his shoulders. The moonlight streaming through the window cast a pale glow across the room, illuminating the scattered papers and maps on his desk. His mind raced, unable to find solace in the familiar surroundings.
Elias's return had stirred a whirlwind of emotions within him. Adrian leaned back, closing his eyes as he replayed the night's events. Elias, his childhood friend and confidant, had been a ghost in his memories for so long. Seeing him alive, standing there as if no time had passed, was surreal. The initial shock had given way to a tumult of relief, joy, and an underlying current of suspicion.
He thought back to their earlier conversation. Elias had been vague about where he'd been and what he'd done. Adrian couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to Elias's disappearance than he was letting on. Trusting him again wasn't going to be easy, especially with the pack's safety at stake. His thoughts drifted to Caleb. Caleb's reaction had been unexpected. The fear and apprehension in his eyes when he saw Elias couldn't be ignored. Adrian knew Caleb well, or at least he thought he did. What secrets was Caleb hiding? And how did they connect to Elias's sudden return?
Adrian sighed, rubbing his temples. The burden of leadership was heavy enough without these added complications. He knew he needed to get to the bottom of this, to uncover the truths that lay hidden beneath the surface. Elias's reappearance could either be a blessing or a harbinger of more trouble.
Despite his doubts, a part of Adrian wanted to believe in Elias, to trust that their bond was strong enough to withstand whatever had kept them apart. But he couldn't afford to be naive. The safety of his pack came first, and he had to be vigilant.
As the night wore on, Adrian's mind continued to wrestle with the implications of Elias's return. The room grew colder, the shadows lengthening as he sat in silence. He knew that tomorrow would bring more questions and more challenges. For now, he allowed himself a moment of reflection, clinging to the hope that, in the end, the truth would prevail and the bonds of friendship and loyalty would hold strong against the coming storm.
CALEB’S POV:
Elias's sudden return had thrown him off balance. Caleb could still see the look in Elias's eyes, piercing and knowing, as if he could see right through him. Panic gnawed at the edges of his mind. Elias's presence was a threat to everything he had worked so hard to maintain.
He stopped pacing and leaned against the wall, his breath coming in shallow gasps. "Why now?" he muttered under his breath, his voice tinged with desperation. Why did Elias have to come back just when things were finally stable?
Caleb's mind raced back to the years they had all spent together, the camaraderie and trust they had shared. Elias had been like a brother to Adrian, and in those days, Caleb had felt like he belonged, like he was part of something greater. But things had changed. Desperation had driven him to make choices he now regretted, choices that could unravel everything if Elias found out.
Adrian’s expression from earlier haunted him. The mixture of relief and suspicion in his alpha's eyes made Caleb's stomach churn. Adrian knew something was off, but he couldn’t yet pinpoint what. Caleb needed to be careful, to ensure that Adrian's trust in him remained intact.
He crossed the room to the small window, looking out at the moonlit forest. The weight of his actions pressed heavily on him, the betrayal he harbored threatening to crush him. How could he make Adrian understand? How could he justify what he had done?
Caleb clenched his fists, his nails digging into his palms. He needed a plan, a way to protect himself from the inevitable fallout of Elias's return. He couldn’t let the past destroy the fragile stability they had built. He needed to find a way to neutralize the threat Elias posed, to keep his secrets buried.
But even as he thought of ways to protect himself, guilt gnawed at him. He had once been loyal to Adrian and had believed in their cause. Could he continue down this path of deceit and betrayal?
He shook his head, forcing himself to focus. Now wasn’t the time for doubt. He had to stay one step ahead. Tomorrow, he would face Elias and Adrian again, and he needed to be ready.
Caleb took a deep breath, trying to steady his racing heart. The coming days would test him in ways he had never anticipated. But he was determined to survive, to keep his place in the pack and protect the fragile peace he had fought so hard to maintain.
As he lay down on his bed, staring up at the ceiling, Caleb made a silent vow. He would do whatever it took to ensure his secrets stayed hidden, even if it meant betraying those he once called friends.
ELIAN’S POV:
Elias found himself standing alone in the small guest room he had been given. The room was simple, furnished with just a bed, a dresser, and a chair by the window. He let out a long breath, the events of the night replaying in his mind.
Seeing Lila again had stirred a deep well of emotions within him. She had been like a mother to him, especially after his parents had died. Her embrace, her tears, her unwavering acceptance—it was more than he had dared to hope for. But it also brought with it a heavy burden. The secrets he carried felt even heavier now, knowing the pain his disappearance had caused.
His thoughts turned to Adrian. Elias could see the mix of relief and suspicion in his old friend's eyes. Adrian had always been strong, a pillar for the pack, but Elias knew the weight of leadership had taken its toll. He wanted to ease Adrian's burden, to support him as he had always done, but he knew it wouldn’t be easy. Trust, once broken, was hard to rebuild.
Then there was Caleb. The moment their eyes had met, Elias had sensed something off. Caleb's reaction to his return had been sharp, almost panicked. It didn’t take a mind reader to see that Caleb was hiding something. Elias knew he had to tread carefully. Caleb had been a trusted friend, but people changed, and Elias couldn’t afford to ignore the warning signs.
He sighed, running a hand through his hair. There were so many questions and so many uncertainties. He had come back for answers, but he had also brought with him a storm of unresolved issues. His time away had been necessary, but it had also cost him dearly. He had seen and done things he couldn’t yet speak of, things that had kept him alive but haunted his every step.
Elias clenched his fists, determination hardening within him. He had come back for a reason. The secrets he carried were not just his own—they were entwined with the fate of the pack. He needed to find a way to make Adrian understand, to share the burden without breaking the fragile trust they were trying to rebuild.
Tomorrow, he would start unraveling the tangled threads of his past. He would confront Caleb, and try to discern the truth behind his friend's wary gaze. And he would talk to Adrian, reveal enough to start the process of healing and understanding.
Elias lay down on the bed, staring up at the ceiling. The road ahead was fraught with challenges, but he was determined to face them head-on. He had come back to reclaim his place in the pack, to protect those he loved, and to make amends for the years he had been away. No matter what it took, he would fight for his family, his pack, and the future they all deserved.
……
Morning came, the wind blew through the windows and the sky was clear, Lila was already in the kitchen making breakfast for the boys, her eyes were filled with immense joy and happiness.
“Hmmm… what’s that wonderful aroma I’m perceiving” said Adrian as he made his way through the stairs.
“Let me guess, you must be making your signature spaghetti bolognese? I would be able to perceive it amongst other meals” said Elias as he walked towards Lila and hugged her from behind.
Breakfast was served and Caleb joined shortly after.
Elian and Adrian went for a walk immediately after breakfast.
The morning sun filtered through the trees, casting dappled shadows on the forest floor as Adrian and Elias walked side by side. The air was cool and crisp, carrying the scent of pine and earth. They had shared a quiet breakfast with Lila, the weight of unspoken words lingering between them.
Adrian broke the silence first, his voice steady but tinged with underlying tension. “I still can’t believe you’re back, Elias. After all these years…” He glanced at his friend, searching for any hint of the boy he once knew.
Elias smiled faintly, his eyes scanning the familiar surroundings. “It feels surreal to be back, Adrian. I missed this place more than I can say.”
Adrian nodded, shoving his hands into his pockets. “We all missed you. But you didn’t give us any answers last night. Where have you been all this time?”
Elias sighed, his expression growing somber. “I know I owe you an explanation. But it’s complicated. Things were happening that I couldn’t control, things that kept me away for everyone’s safety.”
Adrian’s brow furrowed, frustration evident in his tone. “You can’t expect me to accept that without more details, Elias. We thought you were dead. Lila mourned you every day. I…” He paused, his voice softening. “I lost my best friend.”
Elias stopped walking, turning to face Adrian fully. “I’m sorry, Adrian. Truly. If I could have found a way to come back sooner, I would have. But I was dealing with forces beyond our pack’s understanding.”
Adrian’s eyes narrowed, suspicion creeping in. “Forces? What kind of forces?”
Elias hesitated, choosing his words carefully. “There are other packs, other creatures out there. Not all of them are friendly. I got tangled up in something much bigger than us, something dangerous. I had to disappear to protect everyone here.”
Adrian studied Elias, his mind racing. “And now? What’s changed? Why come back now?”
Elias took a deep breath. “Because the danger hasn’t passed, but I’ve learned enough to believe I can help now. Our pack needs to be prepared, Adrian. We’re facing threats that go beyond our borders.”
Adrian felt a knot tighten in his stomach. “You think we’re in danger?”
Elias nodded. “Yes. And I can’t do this alone. I need your help, Adrian. I need the pack to trust me again.”
Adrian’s gaze softened slightly. “Trust takes time, Elias. You’ve been gone a long time, and a lot has changed. We’ve managed without you, but… it hasn’t been easy.”
Elias placed a hand on Adrian’s shoulder, his grip firm and reassuring. “I know. And I’m not here to disrupt everything. I’m here to stand by your side, to help protect our home. Whatever it takes, I’m with you.”
Adrian took a deep breath, the weight of leadership pressing on him. “We’ll have to take this one step at a time. The pack needs to know they can rely on you, just as I need to know I can trust you.”
Elias’s eyes met Adrian’s, filled with determination. “You can trust me, Adrian. I swear it. I won’t let anything harm our pack. Not again.”
“Alpha," said a breathless and wide-eyed scout. he gasped, with his eyes filled with terror, "your mother has been kidnapped." The words sent a shockwave through Adrian’sspine, the air thickening with palpable tension as Adrian's heart pounded with the ominous weight of the revelation.
