Chapter 5: Unexpected Company

1165 Words
Audrey's POV I ran through the forest jumping over logs and dogging bushes as I looked for a high tree to sleep in. Why does Ian still want me dead? I haven't done anything to him. The boy who swore he was in love with me, wants me dead. He's no good or you; you have a guy that loves you back but your pushing him away Leave me alone, Eva. I snapped cutting her off heading towards an old oak tree by a small lake. Slowing down I bent over trying to catch my breath, i'm a wolf an all but I still get tired. I decided to turn in I can't think straight right now and I’d just drive myself insane thinking about this all night. Climbing the tree I settled myself on a branch and looked up at the stars. Closing my eyes I felt myself drift to sleep. // I blinked my eyes open slowly against the morning sun hearing birds singing through the forest. Sitting up slowly I stretched and yawned loudly, making the stupid mistake of stretching my legs and arms at the same time, panicking as I felt myself slowing falling backwards. "No no no, s**t" I yelled falling off the branch and landing on my back. "Owwwwwwwwwww" I whined looking up at the tree, if I wasn’t a wolf I definitely would’ve broke something. I got up slowly walking to the lake. Staring at my reflection for a while, before bending down to get a drink. I went to stand up, freezing as the sound of a branch snapping rang through my ears. My heart beat picked up as I moved behind a tree quickly and smelled the air. Definitely not human, the heartbeat was to fast, but they had no smell. Whoever they were they were masking their scent too. I listened closely hearing the footsteps slowly disappear and their heartbeat stop. I stepped out from behind the tree and looked around the area, the couldn’t of just vanished. I started to turn slowly a sharp gasp leaving throat as a hand wrapped around my mouth and the other around my waist. I didn't fight, the tingles shooting through my body were indication enough. "You found me" I breathed out as he took his hand off my mouth slowly, his body still pressed up against mine. "I did. It was quite hard, but the three pack members I found dead in the street last night brought me right to here, don’t worry I cleaned up your mess" he whispered in my ear. "Oh the members who tried to kill me?” I questioned trying to turn by his arms but his grip tightened at my words. "What" he growled "no one sent anyone to kill you" he was angry but confused and I don't blame him. "It's a long story" I sighed leaning back into his arms without my consent. "We have time" he replied the anger still apparent in his voice, backing away from me as he sat near the lake. “Well” I started sitting down next to him, "I had this old boyfriend, Ian, and I would have sworn on my life he was my mate" I went on to tell him about the night at the lake and my eventful evening before pausing to look at him, surprised at his abnormal silence. "He's the reason you won't even consider being with me?” He asked slowly making me sigh and run my fingers through my hair. “It’s not just that Jordan, I’m no longer in love with the idea. The pressure I have to be with you, forever, with no choice in the matter. I just want to fall in love, all on my own, not because some goddess in the sky is deeming you right for me” I ranted not knowing how to explain myself completely. “But you do have a choice, you’re making in right now. The choice to not give us a chance at all over some i***t you dated 2 years ago!” He argued his voice slightly raising. “The choice to throw away a future with me because you’re too damn stubborn to not have some fairytale relationship” he yelled making me laugh angrily. “And you’re a perfect option? The man w***e of our f*****g high school! You didn’t seem to care about ‘our’ future as you f****d your way through the cheerleading squad and the rest of our senior class” I screamed back our calm discussion by the lake now turning into a pacing argument at the water edge. “You don’t know me Audrey, you have some preconceived idea about who I am because of s**t I’ve done in the past. Don’t worry about it, I can already tell from Isaac or whatever the hell his name is you’re clingy, and I don’t do clingy” he yelled making my mouth fall open. “Well that’s a lie, because you’ll ‘do’ anyone” I shot back his mouth opening to retort but he paused. I looked at him confused before hearing movement a few yards away. “Who else did you bring with you” I whispered, only getting a head shake in response. I watched as he shifted quickly looking up at me expectantly. I only shook my head not wanting to be heard by our company. I fight better in human form than wolf form. My mom does too, I guess it’s something I get from her. Both of our heads snapped towards the sound of crunching leaves a few yards away before soft growling hit our ears. I turned slowly on my heels seeing 6 wolves circle us slowly. Jordan’s wolf crouched low and gave out a deep growl before launching towards the first wolf. Two of the others jumped at me; my claws extended quickly grabbing them both by their throats and pulling hard watching them fall limp at my feet, shaking the blood of my hands. I looked as Jordan wrestled another two wolves the first dead by a tree. I spun in a circle confused as the sixth wolf seemed to be nowhere in sight. Before I could turn back towards Jordan a sharp pain hit my side as the sun wolves teeth sunk into me. I gritted my teeth reaching down to grab his mouth pulling hard until I heard his jaw bone c***k under my fingers. I snapped my wrists quickly breaking his neck and turning towards Jordan who was hovering over the other dead wolves. We sat in silence for a few seconds, direct eye contact, and neither of us moving. Well that was fun.
