The Race

Skyler                 About halfway through the race I get a whiff of rogues coming from the east. I glace around and notice that Ryker has noticed as well but when we make eye contact, I shake my head at her, and she continues to run. I slip away from the other racers and head in that direction towards the rogues. I make it about 5 miles before they come into view. I close my eyes and shift into Silverclaw letting her take over and I take them on 5 at a time. Pretty soon I see Gamma Joyce and a few of our warriors and they take the ones I haven’t killed to the dungeons.  “Skyler you better go wash up in the stream before heading back to Alpha Jordan,” Joyce says. I nod my head and take off into the water.  Once the blood and smell of the rogues is gone, I cover myself in dirt, much to Silverclaw’s annoyance, “Do we really have to hide our coat from everyone?” she whines.  “Yes, you know the danger if we don’t,” I snap, “Now come on let’s go grab our clothes and head to the finish line. By now Ryker should have crossed the finish line meaning we are going to take last place.” Taking off after getting dressed I’m still covered with dirt and I see the finish line coming so I pick up speed as I wiz past the other racers.   Zander                 I am still fuming when the race starts, and I can see my mate taking her stance to start running. I can tell that she is just playing hard to get. I didn’t know that a wolf can mask their scent besides the higher rankings like an Alpha or a Beta. Even my Gamma can’t mask his scent. She totally took me by surprise when I lost her trail and she jumped down from the tree over me and raced away. I had a hard time keeping up with her until she slowed down to go inside. Kissing her was better than I could have imagined. Focusing back on the race I can feel that something is off when my mate isn’t among the other racers when they come into view of the finish line. But soon I see her covered in dirt and running so fast that she leaves a trail of dust behind her.  “I wonder what happened to her,” I ask Kevin to which I get no response from him. He’s still sulking because our mate shut the door in our face. I’m still pissed over that fact and I can’t seem to tell what she is thinking and that bothers me. As soon as she crosses the finish line, I see her packmate rush over to her before they rush indoors.  I get up to follow but I am confronted by Alpha Joran, “I don’t think you should interfere with what Skyler and Ryker are doing right now,” he says in a calm tone.  “And why the hell not?” I question.  “Because she has a mission during these games and if she fails to complete it then she, herself, will become a rogue,” Alpha Jordan explains before walking away. I stand there stunned as I watch him walk away. I had no idea that was the type of Alpha he was.  “Zander,” my wolf Kevin says grabbing my attention, “I reached out to her wolf and she confirmed what Alpha Jordan said.”  “Huh,” is all that I can say.   Ryker                 When Skyler shown back up at the finish line, I can tell that she has had a rough encounter with those rogues. “Why the hell didn’t she let me come with her,” I ask Ray, my wolf.  “Because you know all too well what her mission is Ryker. We cannot interfere with it. She only as a year left before the King of the Underworld comes for her,” Ray explains, “Besides, we have to with the title of Head Warrior. It’s what she wants. We can’t let her down. Now go help her and take her inside before she collapse.” Sighing I run over to Skyler and we head inside to her room. I help her strip down and get her into a bath.  “Ya know,” I start but pause and sigh, “I don’t want you getting hurt Skyler. I wish you weren’t part of the legend”  “I know Ryker,” Skyler pauses, “But you know if I can’t keep the packs safe then what good am I to anyone? Besides, where did you run off to after your fight?”  I blush saying, “My mate was watching the fight and when I finished, I went to meet him. His name Jason and he is the Gamma for Riverstone.”  Skyler’s face lights up and says, “My mate is the Alpha of Riverstone or well I should say soon to be Alpha.”  I gape with my mouth open wide then I look down and I notice her silver chain wrapped around her arm. Seeing it reminds me of how much time we have left together. Sighing I look into Skyler’s eyes and ask, “You really don’t have much time left, do you?” Shaking her head Skyler gets up out of the tub and gets dressing for the last event of the day. Pausing before I walk out the door I glance back and her and see the scars on her back where my father had dug his claws after he turned rogue. Next week will be my birthday and I just hope my own mate doesn’t turn his back on me. Closing the door, I come face to face with Alpha Jordan. Frowning at him I make my way away from him and towards my own room. I just hope I can say goodbye before she leaves. If it weren’t for Skyler, I would have become a Rogue myself. Sighing I get ready for the next part of the games.   Jordan                 Watching Ryker leave Skyler’s room I know things aren’t great. Just a few minutes after Ryker leaves Skyler comes out of her room looking directly at me. “There were 40 rogues and 5 were left alive and taken back home to the dungeons by Gamma Joyce,” Skyler replies in a dull tone.  “And of the future Alpha of Riverstone?” I question.  “Silverclaw confirmed the story you gave him,” frowning Skyler continues, “If I fail am I really going to become a rogue? You know the legend just as well as I do that if I fail to produce an heir before my 25th birthday then all packs will suffer and be wiped out.”  I just stare at her “She makes a valid point Jordan,” Tristan comments, “Don’t let your pride get in the way for what is best for the pack.”  “Come on,” I say, “We’ve still got an hour before the target event let’s go train.” Skyler follows after me to the training grounds and we begin. “You’re too slow,” I say as Skyler grunts in my grip struggling to throw me off of her, “You have to become stronger than an Alpha if you want to defeat the King of the Underworld. If you cannot beat me then you don’t stand a chance.”  Finally, Skyler throws me off of her and I throw a silver tipped knife at her heart. Skyler catches it and you can hear the sizzle of flesh and the only sound you can hear is a soft grunt as she chucks the knife to the ground charging at me head on. I feel rather than see Skyler hitting me in the chest. I hear a crunching sound and feel about 4 ribs being broken with the force of her kick. Catching her foot, I swing her to the ground not seeing that she caught my legs in the process causing me to tumble down with her.  Laughing I say “Very good, at least now you can handle the pain of silver Skyler. Come here and let me take a look at the chain on your arm. We may have to add a new layer before the event starts.” Taking a look at it I add a fresh coat of silver and wolfsbane and I send her off to get ready for the event. Knowing Skyler, I would say she has something wicked planned.   Zander                 Watching Skyler’s fight with Alpha Jordan I can tell she was built for a war. What war I have no clue. Hearing the sizzle of flesh when she stops the knife I gape when she just tosses it aside and charges at him. In less than 30 minutes she has him on the ground with her and after she helps him up, he asks her to remove her shirt.  “What the f**k?!” I curse under my breath when I see 4 long scars that reach from the top of her right shoulder to the bottom of her left hip. That’s when I notice her taking off of a chain around her left arm and hands it to Alpha Jordan. He pores something over it and puts it back on her. Skyler then takes off and disappears.  “Smells like Wolfsbane and silver,” comments Kevin in my head, “Whatever war this is you’d better warn your father.” With that he retreats to the back of my mind thinking of the kiss with our mate.  I pull out my phone and call my father, he answers on the first ring, “Hey son how are the games so far?” “They have been interesting. Hey, I have something to ask you,” I pause before continuing, “Do you know of a girl named Skyler?”  I hear a sharp intake of breath from his end of the line before he speaks, “This is something that we cannot discuss over the phone, but I will set up a meeting with Alpha Jordan. Son, is this girl your mate?” “Yes,” is all I say before he hangs up the phone. Heading over to where the target event is being held, I notice my mate with her eyes closed throwing knives at the marks without even looking and hitting every single one in the critical zone. After the announcer calls the first participant up that’s when it happens, rogues emerge with their sickly smell of rotten flesh. Oh s**t!
