This was not the wife I abandoned six years ago, she couldn’t be.
I turned and looked at grandfather and then back at her. That signature jet black hair of the Rossi’s was there, maybe a little shorter than I remembered but it was there.
But those green eyes, you could get lost in them, I almost did at the altar six years ago, there was something about them, they were both innocent and sensual at the same time.
I remembered I wanted to pull her close and hold her tight, but I also wanted to take up the stairs and make love to her till we both could no longer breathe. I quickly shook my head to clear my thoughts, because now standing in front of me with those beautiful eyes, I could see something else and it looked a lot like intense dislike.
She beat me to the punch.
"I did not know we were having guests." She said, turning her attention to grandfather, completely ignoring me.
She walked towards him and gave him a kiss in the cheeks.
Ah, yes my darling, this is what I wanted to discuss with you tonight, but he decided to move his flight forward and came home early."
They continued discussing, ignoring my presence completely.
"Alright let me go freshen up and I will join you at the table." She said and walked away, without even a hello, but I didn’t mind because I could not stop looking at those legs of hers as she walked away and an image of those legs wrapped around me while I plunged repeatedly into her crept into my head.
I shook my head again and wondered what was wrong with me, acting like a school boy, seeing a beautiful lady for the first time.
I turned back to my grandfather and sat back down.
"I see you and my wife have gotten very close."
"Well, she is my granddaughter by marriage and she stayed by my side and helped me while you travelled the world."
My face softened. You know I did not mean it that way grandfather."
We talked a little more calmly after that, I told him all about the Switzerland office and how our European operations were going before Carmen called us out for dinner.
Helena was already seated when we got to the dinner table and I did not know it was possible for her to look even more beautiful. She had on a black long sleeved dress, even though it covered most of her skin, it outlined all her curves and I was seated directly opposite her, staring at two magnificent outlines of her breast, god, this was going to be hell.
Dinner was served and grandfather acted as the middleman, she didn’t say a word to me and the few times she spoke, her words were directed towards him.
I wasn’t jealous, I was angry. How dare she ignore me, it was as if I didn’t exist, I was about to direct a question to her when grandfather spoke up.
"Helena is our new communications director, you know?"
I was stunned into silence. "Communications director? I said, since when?" I asked.
"Two years now." Grandfather said.
All this time, I was staring at her, willing her to look up from the bowl of soup she was barely eating but she kept her face down.
Grandfather’s words registered and I looked at him, "two years? That’s the time frame of the…"
"Yes." Grandfather didn’t let me finish.
"That was all Helena’s doing, she took over the team just about the time the campaign was starting and she completed it to what it is today."
"What happened to Malcom; our former communications director?" I asked.
"Well, Helena worked under him when she first started, but then his wife got sick and he wanted to be there for her so he retired early and the clear choice by then was Helena. So, she took over and I must confess, she never ceases to impress me, even till today." Grandfather said, looking at her with an air of proudness.
I nodded and looked back at my wife, this time she had raised her head from the soup but she was looking at my grandfather lovingly and I foolishly thought I was jealous.
Jealous of my grandfather? That was such a stupid idea. I pinned my stare at her willing her to look at me, she held on for a while but finally our eyes locked and it felt like a gut punch, but I refused to give in, I would not be ignored.
"Congratulations Helena, I said, your work speaks very highly of you." I said.
"Thank you." She replied and went back to her dinner.
The rest of dinner went by silently, but my mind kept turning in different directions.
A lot had changed since I left six years ago. For one, my wife had become this sexy goddess I could hardly recognize.
Don’t get me wrong even six years ago I was strongly drawn to her, those green eyes had almost made me forget all about the contract and plant my lips on those beautiful pink lips, but she also looked innocent and fragile and I as much of a bastard that I was I could not bring myself to taint her so I stayed away.
But now she was different, the innocence wasn’t completely gone I could tell, but it was different, she wasn’t fragile, she wasn’t weak, in fact just the opposite, she had taken her bad luck and turned it around.
I just never imagined, even though she had a masters in communication, I never imagined she would put that degree to work.
Most of the women in our circle, preferred shopping and putting their names on charities to actual work so I never kept tabs on that part of her life, I only knew that she rarely left the house and whatever social gatherings she attended she went with grandfather.
There seems to be lot I don’t know about this wife of mine and I begin to feel like coming home was the best decision.
I was eager to discover everything about her, and I mean, everything.
Dinner ended quickly because we barely ate much. Helena excused herself immediately and went upstairs and I could not help myself but watched her as she walked out of the room, this was going to be very interesting.
Grandfather’s cough brought me out of it and I looked at him.
"So are you staying this time or you're running off again?" He asked.
"I did not run." I replied with indignation.
"Yes, you did, he continued, completely ignoring my outburst, and it took a long time, but she is finally out of her shell, Lord knows that dreadful family of hers did a number on her and then you abandoned her, but she is doing well now and she is happy. So I want to know, are you back to be her husband or are you here to make her suffer?" Grandfather had not spoken to me like this since I was a teenager and I knew it was because of the affection he had for Helena.
And for the first time, I felt bad for leaving in the first place.
I looked at him and said, "No one is going to make my wife suffer."
We sat in silence for a while, before he got up to go to bed.
He tapped me on the shoulder and gave me a kiss on the head saying, "welcome home, son."
By the time I went up to my room, the house was quiet and dark. I stepped into the room and stared at that blasted adjoining door, bringing back memories of my wedding night. I stepped forward and opened the door, hoping to catch a glimpse of my sleeping wife.
But to my surprise, the room was empty and dusty, the furniture was covered in clothes and I realized Helena had moved.
For a reason I did not understand, I was furious, but this would not stand, first thing tomorrow morning, her things would be moved back here.
Well, would she? I asked myself in my head.
